If they are an 8 year player then their club has the opportunity to match the offers from rival clubs. 10 years they don't have the option.

But do you honestly think that a player like Goddard wouldn't be fielding offers from more than just Fremantle and St. Kilda? I mean we were out-priced when it came to getting Mitch Clark. His manager would be making calls to every club in the league.

If we did get him he would come at a price and with salary caps the extra he would be getting paid could only come from our other players. The way the new veteran payments are structured now means we won't get any relief there either.

We placed a value on Clark that we wouldn't exceed. It's fair to say that the value we place on Goddard will be higher than that.

such an amateur article, hard to get through, no offence to anyone that wrote it reading this......

Heh, offend away, the guys an idiot.

Are you trying to say that its unlikely we will get him anyway given that we have a ceiling that we won't go over?

Read this article last week, didn't deem it necessary to start a thread on though. I'll believe it when it happens, not when some twit with a typewriter starts his own perpetual rumour machine.

Statistically, If an infinite number of Hackdorrns were typing on an infinite number of typewriters, one of them would eventually write something half decent with a hint of truth about it.

Non event. Goddard $1M a year straight to GWS, Tier 1 compensation = 2 first round pics for Saints who are starting to rebuild. Everyone's a winner, lock it in.

It's was the best of times, it was the blurst of times..? You stupid Hackdorn!

Pretty sure the only thing we know for sure is that he has zilch interest in going to GWS, a premiership is higher priority for him than the cash. Besides if he elected to go to GWS they could take him under the free agency rule and stiff them out of any compo.

600K a year and one of these:

Imagine driving that to Footy training!:D

That one is going to be interesting. Then again If he did go to GWS, What would the chances be of him getting a flag there? Very slim at best. Hes 27 with a good 5 years left. I dont see GWS or GC win a flag in 5 years time.

I think he is a terrific player and you would fit Goddard into the best 22 in every team in the AFL.

But if we have a big wad of cash to use then I think it needs to be used a bit more surgically in terms of getting the missing pieces of a Premiership puzzle. I am thinking about how Geelong went after Ottens, or Collingwood went after Jolley and Ball.

If I look at our list then the type of player that would have the most impact in those terms would be along the lines of Joel Selwood, who of course I realise we would not have any chance in getting.

I reckon we have a small chance of getting Goddard.

1st off I agree he would be in most teams 22 including our mob. You need to ask the Question: Does Freo have an elite midfielder that constantly tears up the oppostion each week? Probrably not but we have some solid kids. I would love Goddard and Morabito outmuscle opposition teams.

I predicted that Freo were going to get 7th or 8th spot in 2012. But If we get 4th and Play in a preliminary final loss I reckon Goddard might go to us.

The ultimate question is the Money. How much does he want and who can afford him? If hes asking for say... $600,000 a year who can afford him in the teams cap? You need to wonder if a contender, like Geelong, Hawthorn or Carlton are willing to sacrifice a player or cash so they can afford him?

Looking at Our situation. I think we can afford him. Although we might just fit him in.

Theres maybe a couple of options available But I reckon this might be the best one: When Mark Harvey lured Adam McPhee from Essendon, he was offered a 3 contract worth $400,000 a year and his contract ends this season. There might be a chance he might retire in 2012.

As For the remaining $200,000? Obiviously we need to delist a Few Players. Theres a big chance Grover is in his last season as well and I reckon hes on that amount.

If theres any young guys from our club out of Contract in 2012, I reckon we can retain all of them simply because of 2 things

1. The Average AFL team delists 3-6 players every year to replace the deadwood.

2. The overall salary cap increase a small amount every year.

Didn't realize he was a free agent this year? My bad. I still feel pretty confident he'll go. They have the cap room to outbid any team and if we are talking about a $million more over 4 years, IMO he's still a very quality player who can play out 4+ years with GWS and a reasonable chance at a flag by 2016/17.

Teams get compensation if they lose a player to free agency.

In short - if Goddard came to Freo I would be extremely happy.

yes, would provide a massive and immediate boost to the dockers talent pool.........but sorry can't see it happening. accommodating his required salary would be tough for any team in the top 6, which is where Freo oughta be by the end of this season. Also right now i can't think of any absolutely top players of non-WA origin who have chosen to shift to WA.

I'm sure someone here will correct me if I've forgotten someone.

btw Taz doesn't count. He'd had a few mediocre/disappointing seasons before Collingwood made the decision to move him on as an (overpaid) unfulfilled talent......then after the dockers had added some steel to his game the bastards pinched him back.

Seriously, read that sentence.

Expected to be constantly linked with a possible move...

About as much credibility as a horoscope reading. Less actually, since horoscopes don't foreshadow something they're about to do themselves like it's some sort of revelation...

Exactly what I was thinking.

Our "sports reporters" are fast becoming like that of the UK when it comes to player movement.

Really? I wasn't aware of that, do you think the compo would be determined by the same measures as if GWS signed them up as an uncontracted player signing?

That is my understanding. However I believe it also takes into account the net result from free agency. So if you lose a player to free agency but then pick up a similar player under free agency you don't get any compensation.

Chris Bond. Dean Solomon. Adrien Fletcher. Mark Johnson. Ashley Prescott. Tony Modra. Chris Tarrant. Fabian Francis.

Those are names of pretty decent players, but absolutely top is a bit more difficult.

Shane Smeltz. Different sport but same theory - money talks, just ask Mitch Clark

No disrespect intended as some of those guys gave good service to Freo, but no-one on that list can be even remotely compared to Goddard who is presently in his prime. A couple of those guys (ie Johnson) were journeymen.

Closest in terms of contemporary status amongst the AFL elite is Tony Modra. Modra's last season at Adelaide (albeit on return from serious knee injury) amounted to 17 or 18 goals in 8 or 9 games. A shift here was the only way he could stay on the big bucks.

Anyhow just because a Top 10 player hasn't moved to the west previously doesn't mean it can't happen now.......especially if Freo moves up the ladder and perform like a genuine contender.

Be great if it happens as sometimes I think the focus on ex WAers as recruiting targets is immature. It's a national comp! To think we drove up Mitch Clark's asking salary to a reported $800,000 is mind-boggling.
