Hello everyone.

I've found I'm starting to like dance music, and would like to buy some stuff, but don't know much about it, does anyone have any recommendations?

This BT album rocks, by the way.

Depends what you classify dance music as? I like 666 (thats their name) but I mainly buy mixed albums full of different artists. Thats what I suggest anyway, but a cd with a number of artists and if you find you like a specific one, buy their individual cd. Thats how I got hooked on 666 anyway...

My recommendation is to buy something else! :D If you want boppy and uplifting stuff, try some Cathedral. They groove like nobody's business!

Just as rock music attained perfection during the 70s (thanks Homer!), Dance music attained perfection during the late 80s (Georgio Moroder) and early 90s.

Of the newer stuff, Sash! is the absolute standout.

Get this sone Norman Bass - How do U like Bass absolute pelter ;) as for good dance music CD's. The Gatecrasher CD's are always good and I dont know if you'll like him But I do his name Is Mauro Piccotto :D hes a ripper DJ.......

There is SOOOOOOOOo many different styles of dance out there its not funny
Electronic, trance, Drum n Bass, Jungle, House, Trip Hop, Rave, Hardcore, Club, Club-House, Euro, Euro Dance, Euro House etc you get the picture

do you like the kylie minogue/madison avenue style dance music...or dance music without lyrics

I can recommend some good house/breakbeat/trance DJs

Paul van Dyk is one of the best DJs in the world
John Digweed is a standout
Carl Cox is another great DJ
Chris Lawrence
Sasha (with an 'a' on the end...diferent to sash)
Sasha vs Digweed

There is some good mix cds around like Clubbers Guide to Trance

but i warn you whatever you buy your likely to pay thru the nose for....Australia doesnt have a record label for dance/electronic music which means everything is imported therefore more expensive.
Most dance cds (well the ones in adelaide anyway) cost around $35-40...if its a double cd its likely to be around $50-60.....singles are around $20.

Ministry of Sound is a good place to start. They have a great number of compilations out and are great listening. Some word of advice though ... stay away from those commercial compilations as they're total rubbish and a waste of money.

If you want to hear some of the new club tunes coming out of Europe ... keep an eye on the Euro and UK dance charts. Also, if in Melbourne, keep you ears out for the various youth stations (with restricted broadcasting licences) that pop up. HitzFM (http://www.hitzfm.org.au) and PulseFM are on at the moment, with Hitz being in its 20th test broadcast. We will find out next year if they get a full-time licence.

So yeah ... there's the low-down :)

Dj Disco is pretty good. Get on Morpheus, or whatever you use and download some of his stuff: That Sound, Stamp Your feet.

Also try some of these DJ's
Full Intention, Deeja, Paul Van Dyk...
Gatecrasher Albums are good if you want that stuff and so are www.hedkandi.com . :)

I cant believe my hawthorn comrades are saying this stuff - unbelievable, I am totally ashamed to know them. Although what more can you expect from a nerdy beancounter, a guy who can recite the recipe for scones off the top of his head and a little kiddie???? :D

I've only just began getting into dance music of late. I've found the Gatecrasher and Ministry of Sound CD's to be the best way to ease yourself into it as you develop your tastes.

Ministry of Sound CD's are a great way to ease yourself into the complex and multi-faceted world of 'Dance Music'

But it depends on what you like to listen to , there are just so many different styles and sub-styles out there.

You just have to look at Macca19's little list to realise its a big, BIG world out there.

I like Dance Music heaps, because I have always had a fascination for electronic music period, but because the 'scene' is just so fluid with different sounds and different artists coming and going so quickly, I don't have the time or inclination to really keep up with who is doing what.

So as far as reccomending a specific 'band' or artist to you, I can't.

All I can suggest is - pick the particular 'style' you like, then try and hunt down the appropriate recordings.

As others have suggested, its probably a good idea to ignore 'names' and just go for compilation CDs that will show case a particular style of Dance Music from a number of different artists.

A great place to start is Central Station Records - do you have one of them in Melbourne ?

And also - music file swapping on the Internet is a great way of keeping up with the Dance Music scene, its a bit less complicated and confusing than hunting down CDs. There are also heaps and heaps of websites devoted to Dance and Electronic Music so checking some these out is also a good way to get the lowdown.

The best way of course is to do it the PROPER way : Go to Raves, get **** faced, listen to the music and properly immerse yourself in the Dance culture.

Its a hoot

cheers

I thought I was the only one who enjoyed this type of music.

Paul van dyk is a great dj. I also love Sash. I have about 40 dance music CDs. I have most of the CDs by Kix fm, a couple from Wild fm, one from Pulse fm, a cd called Kickin hard volume 3 from Alex K, Skitz mix 9, both albums by Sash and heaps more.

I am not sure what they are doing in Adelaide, but the double CDs that I have cost about $35. A CD with about 20 songs costs about $29.95. A single CD costs no more than $10. $50 for a double CD is a bit much in my opinion.

Try this internet radio site.

You can listen to just about any sort of music including Dance music here. Dance/Euro dance/techno/club/trance music is the way to go. Better than that crap from the Backstreet boys, Human nature, Bardot, the Spice girls or any of those sort of boy or girl bands. I have pretty much no time for pop music from the 90s, or this decade either.

Away from this type of music, I go for the classic retro from the 80s or late 70s. I listen to it every Tuesday night on Kix fm.

Other stations with dance music include Street fm, Kiss 90 fm, and Kix fm. As for them getting a license next year, I would not be so sure of it happening next year. The first time I had ever heard of these stations in 1998, they were expecting the Australian Broadcasting Authority to give out the licenses. But the ABA keep on saying that their have been delays, and they keep on saying that the licenses will be given out next year.

What I am trying to say is that it is not a certainty that the ABA will give out full time licenses next year, because the ABA say every year that they will give them out, but they never do. Again, this year the ABA were meant to give them out, but now I believe that because of the election, the decision has been delayed, and it will be given out next year. For one reason or another, their is always a delay, and it will probably happen again next year.
