Coach Goodwin sacked

They are hard to win, but IMO Melbourne 2021 was vastly more talented than whichever four premiers will come after it... and they didn't even make another prelim.
agree...had the opportunity to dynasty, unfortunately they had a few players who had a flag and a big contract and were content and stopped working hard..

Taking on the Melbourne coaching role would be a significant challenge, particularly when weighing up whether to start a full rebuild or add in experienced talent in an attempt to contend for another premiership.

Below is a snapshot of the current ages of some key players:

Max Gawn – 33

Clayton Oliver – 28

Christian Petracca – 29

Kysaiah Pickett – 24

Steven May – 33

Jake Lever – 29

Christian Salem – 30

Jack Viney – 31

It raises an interesting strategic question for the club: Should Melbourne look to aggressively recruit established players from other clubs in pursuit of another flag, or would it be wiser to begin trading players in their late 20s to early 30s while they still hold market value, and commence a longer-term rebuild?

Curious to hear the perspective of Melbourne supporters on what direction the club should take from here.

Fair payout coming his way.

Winning a flag was a huge achievement, how many coaches before Goodwin couldn't do it. And the way they won that flag was incredible, I was gobsmacked by their power and pressure that day. It was Goodwin's trademark planted on the group. How easily we forget and diminish. He should be thanked and farewelled with some dignity, why bash him up?

I reckon it's about the coach's game plan and ability to adapt to the ever changing evolutions of footy. Dees got stuck in a mode of relying on gun defenders and mids and hoping the weight of forward entries would prevail. But more often than not it was too easy for oppo to defend, and became an easy turnover to score off.

Recently with Melchin in the team, it was obvious his running patterns and lateral leading was the type of approach that's needed, and has been missing for some long, but Melchin is not enough. The whole team approach needs to be in sync.

The threat of players leaving also contributes to the impression the rot is setting in. A new coach and vision will help some players stay, and support the youth coming through who are pretty good, and do not need to be raised on an out of date footy style, they need to be trained up in a modern adaptible approach starting from now.

It will be interesting to see who the prospective replacements are ... does anyone have any info on that?

I think the biggest immediate question is whether Petracca and Oliver would be happy to stay or not. If the answer is no, they absolutely both have to go - even if it is a fire sale.

The new administration just cannot be saddled with a team that isn't happy to be there. They gave holding them against their will a go for 12 months; it's collapsed. Move it on.

I disagree about our list in 2022. We had a real mishmash - particularly in the midfield. Honestly, Stanley, Guthrie, an eleventy-billion-year-old Dangerfield, and an even older Selwood should not have been able to compete with Gawn, Oliver, Petracca and Viney. But we did.
I think to be fair we never got to play you in finals. However you’re understood those players of yours. Seriously good footballers. Rhys Stanley was huge in that GF as was Dangerfield.

Would wholly depend on what other clubs would be willing to pay.
Lever and Petracca are the only players on that list that would attract substantial compensation for mine.
Oliver out would essentially be a contract dump, May and Gawn wouldn’t be worth, Salem has become a nothing player and Viney has about the same currency.
Pickett is obviously going nowhere now.

The other option really depends on what the actual problem is, nearest comparison would be Collingwood 2021 but that was clearly about having some fresh idea’s.
Something tells me Melbourne’s issues run a fair bit deeper.

It's Melksham, not Melchin.....

Dangerfield was excellent in that GF, seriously incredible. Stanley was ok ;)

But Danger still wasn't Petracca or Bont - he was on 60% game time, and coached brilliantly. Basically, an ageing footballer was played to his strengths.

Fair dinkum, this club. Only they could turn winning a premiership into a source of regret.

At least I hope everyone on the Board is feeling okay today - somebody really should reach out to them and reassure them it's still never their fault.

Ok, so who are the candidates to coach Melbourne in 2026 and beyond?
Do they go for a new coach? a current assistant coach at club? or do they go for a coach that has experience that has only been out of the coach's box for a short time?
Nathan Buckley
John Longmire
Adam Simpson
Leon Cameron
Kenny Hinkley lol

What sort of relationship does Kenny have with Choc Williams? We know Alan Richardson is tight with him so that could actually work in Kenny's favor.

If he can sell the idea to Trac, Oliver etc and get them to hang around and roll the dice on another flag push in the next 2-3 years then he might get the gig.

Whoever comes in needs to do something about their KPP issue.

Can't keep relying on TMac & Lever down back or putting it all on JVR as a tall forward.

There is still the core of a good team there, they could do a little reset and come back. They've had some bad luck with Angus Brayshaw - who was one of the heart and soul players of that team, plus doubled down (along with Carlton), on a playing style that isn't working that well. Also losing Luke Jackson set them back a bit - I think he was pivotal to their winning the flag in 2021, though they seem to have some decent kids from drafting over the last couple of years. Also it seems some of the off-field issues didn't help.

Fundamentally though, bombing it into the forward line and expecting that to work is the main issue for Melbourne - whether that was a direction, or they had no forwards who could lead, or just players reverting to a previous plan I'm not sure.

They really need stability at the board, CEO level as well, which they seemed to lose sight of for some reason. It doesn't help when everyone is in an "interim" position.

When they won the flag playing extraordinary footy, with the most imposing midfield and a bunch of young stars, it felt like they would dominate for years to come. Instead, it's been a disaster.

Would love to know the true inside story of what went wrong some day.
Melbourne's success was built off contest and scoring from clearance. They were the kings of it in their premiership year.

The game has shifted to playing on the outside and playing fast transition footy.

Wtf is all this 'Should have been a Dynasty!' stuff?

They won a COVID flag with a forward line led by Ben Brown and Tom McDonald - hell of an achievement but that was never going to happen under normal circumstances.

The timing of this is bold bu Melbourne - they are in their 'Pre-Fall' and likely need to slash and burn where they can over the next couple of seasons. 3 years for a 'development coach' won't go astray.
I think it is born out of how their key players were looking at that point in time, they look to have been some their ALL-TIME club legends so the expectation to deliver at least another grand final appearance is warranted imo.

Gawn is the best ruck they have EVER had
Petracca was a top 2 player in the league and really should still be
Oliver was looking like he could be one of Melbourne's greatest ever players (was legitimately my favourite at the time)
May and Lever were dominant and at the time you'd be up for the debate as the bets pillars in the comp.
Brayshaw was nearing the best 'third' mid in the league
Viney was the heart and soul clubman comparable to a Lewis/Selwood/Cotchin type that all great teams need.
And then role players like Pickett, Fristch, Harmes, Langdon, AWB, Salem, Mcdonald, Jackson in or coming into their prime.

These are types that really should be Melbourne football Club all time legends but what has panned out has been anything but.

For a club that had waited for so long and been through a period of being so, so uncompetitive they have made a horrible mess of it. Some is down to circumstance for sure and personalities can bring unforseen issues, still crazy where they sit now compared to what it looked like being though.

You know, I think there is more to the story than an inability to change game plans.

When he was busted hitting the nose beers with players, rather than trying to stop that culture, he should've been sacked
💯

Shit stain of a bloke.
Absolutely no sympathy for that club and it’s supported tho.

Glen bartlett(like Ken judge at the eagles) tried blowing the whistle on exactly what was going on with Goodstuff goodwin and certain players but alas just like the WC board with judge they decided to crucify and slander Bartlett instead due to the high profile and “success” of those involved
The supporters likewise

As they say winning hides everything and basic morals, ethics professionalism takes a back seat .

Of course tho when that stops you inevitably end up with the dumpster fire that is the MFC atm

And just like WC board at the time of their drugs saga Melbourne ms board has continually to wipe itself of any and all blame .

You reap what you sow
