i know for a fact that its not makybe (but should be, seeing as he has won 3 times...) spoke to the guy who painted a massive painting of it for the celebrations... apparently its getting auctioned at the end or something...

couldnt find out from the bloke who the winner is...

i think it will probably be carbine...

The winner has to be a "class horse" for mine, one that also won the Cox Plate IMO.

I'm hoping Phar Lap wins, cmon, he's the ultimate People's champ and would have won the race 3-4 times if not for huge weights and dying young.

Might and Power has to be up there for mine also, how many horses have lead the whole way and won?

I threw Carbine in, just because of the "legend" surrounding the horse and it's subsequent breeding link to Phar Lap also.

My top 3;

1. Phar Lap
2. Carbine
3. Might and Power

Gotta chuck Rising Fast into your mutliples, surely. Great form. :D

It's hard to imagine such a promotional event for not just racing fans, but the Australian public, and not see both Phar Lap and Makybe Diva in the Top 3.. Even people who know SFA about racing have heard of them as being 'the best' and none of the other horses in the field can boast to have had captured the imagination and hearts of the public during their racing career to the same extent and/or for as long.
It's a fluff piece for the 150th party for the showpiece of Australian racing and its public. They'll both have to be close.

As for 'punting' on it... impossible, and I just wouldn't/don't want to :p Anyhoo... at the odds, I'd be on Galilee.

1. Phar Lap (it'd be un-Asutralian for him not to win! Even though by my reckoning, topweight + B.21 should make it tough :p)
2. Galilee
3. Rising Fast

Can't wait to see the vision + call. Sure, it's not fair and a bit of a slap in the face to some champions (well, the ones who finish miles back anyway :p), but it's all in good fun :thumbsu:

  1. phar lap
  2. carbine
  3. peter pan
honourable mentions, makybe diva, rising fast and rain lover.

hard as hell to pick it.
thought gold and black should probably get a run in the race as he picked up a 2nd in a bog and won in the heat in 77.
also, how did kingston rule not get in there? still holds the record 20 years later, let's elope, kiwi and tawriffic also had great wins.

Saintly with 53 kgs and at $26 I wouldn't mind a piece of that.

That said I think the finishing order will be

1. Phar lap
2. Makybe Diva
3. Rising Fast

At the weights, I'd take Saintly, Dalray and Doriemus.

At those weights, Makybe Diva wouldn't run top 10 in that field, the field she beat for her 3rd win was pretty weak.

But ultimately, after doing the "form", I've settled on.

1. Might and Power
2. Saintly
3. Phar Lap

Weight can kill a horse over 3200m, and most of the horses numbered 1-7 couldn't compete against that class of a field.

Might and Power, with Jimmy on his back, would just roll along at amazing sectionals with 55 on his back, and would never be caught, especially if the track was good or dead.
Saintly is the classiest horse in the field (outside of Phar Lap) IMO, and with 53kg wouldn't know himself.
Phar Lap is a freak, his heart would carry him into a place, just like 1929 and his other top 6-7 finish in 31.

But it's subjective as to how good a horse one was in a particular time, track conditions, etc etc.

I want to see the computer animated race if that do it though, Phar Lap will win just for the promo sakes.

I've been drinking boags draught so as to have a lot of trifecta entries in the competition. Counted out all 48 lids so far I've drank and have only 4 identical entries, with about 10 for each of Phar Lap and Makybe winning the race, leaving about 24 entries for others but I think I counted only 8 possible different winners so that narrows it down. Looking at my bottle lids though I like Phar Lap or Carbine

had to sign a confidentiality agreement at work today....

sworn to secrecy, soz guys...

They had a similar concept about twenty years ago called The Greatest Raceday In 150 Years. A panel of handicappers judged Phar Lap to be the winner of the 3200m event by an eyelash over Carbine, as per the Bryan Martin phantom call of the closing stages, though Phar Lap had a weight advantage (either 0.5kg or 1kg - can't remember which). Therefore in the opinion of the panel, Carbine would've nudged out Phar Lap at level weights.

As neither horse has started since :), and with Carbine in receipt of a kilo from Phar Lap on Tuesday, I'd expect Carbine to finish ahead. Great value at the $11. :p

Banjo Paterson, who was Sportsman editor for a decade and saw both horses race, decreed Phar Lap superior on the grounds that Carbine was beaten home by a little-known galloper called Abercorn in 3 of their 7 WFA clashes.

On the other hand, if they handicap this virtual race on times then neither will be a contender.

15. Malua

Wins included:

Melbourne Cup (with 61.5kg)
Adelaide Cup
Australian Cup (then 3600m)
Melbourne Stks (aka Mackinnon Stks)
Newmarket Hcp
Oakleigh Plt
Grand National Hdl (at first jumps start under 76kg)

Surely the most versatile horse of all time. An entertaining account of his career can be found here.

I blame Ramage for riding straightback. :p

Seriously, if Phar Lap can win under 60kg with the worst ride since Mick Kinnane, legend has transcended reason...
