Bloody hell nearly passed out when I read this one....thought it read "Greg Miller signs up......"

I'm OK now in case you were wondering

Can someone enlighten me as to what a development coach does?

Not in any way dissing the position, as clearly it is a facet sadly lacking at RFC in recent years, but on a day to day basis, what does a dev coach do?

Is it mostly a psych role, teaching them where to run, cook and/or meet chicks?

That wasn't meant to be facetious. I'm just not sure the width of a DC's job description when it comes to footy vs off field focus

I take it as this is an addition, and not some sort of replacement to Tim Livingstons position of Player Development Mgr. Those would be where the lines blur significantly.
Regarding the Development Roles, i see them as having more a holistic view, dealing with the various game-day coaches, both from Rich FC and Burgers, conditioning staff, and dealing with Player Welfare managers (if we have some). I think there focus would have to be on fringe 22 players, and players who are in the burgers.

Sounds like a good appointment, with a guy who some quality characteristics and abilities.

I dont profess to know all the answers but I remember hearing on SEN one of Collingwoods developement managers talking about what they did.

They did a lot of one on one coaching, so they would show videos of a particular game scenario that they wanted to teach, instruct the player in areas such as body positioning, awareness of other players, etc and then show them how they wanted them to react under those circumstances. They would then setup drills with multiple role players to try and recreate that game situation and then run that player through that drill over and over, until it became a learned response. They might stop and show video of what the player was doing in the drills, tell him what he needed to work on, then go back and reperform the drills again until the player got it right.

Same as normal coaching but a lot more specific and targetted generally at one player at a time.

Obviously its hard in a big group to be this specific as they can be very slow and tiresome for groups to participate in.

I ain't a huge fan of having school teachers involved in elite sport !
Many kids turn to footy , like Dusty , because they can't stand school methodology .

This is the same Dusty when left to his own devices can back to the club out of shape.

The same one who left school at 15 and thought driving trucks was the go.

Yep he sure does not need someone looking after him.

Adelaide has been very fruitful this preseason. Great get, wonder if he's had any influence on Morris?

Yes the same Dustin who left school as he lost interest with the methods used by teachers , went to Sydney with his father and through his involvement with football is now a household name !
He was only an example there are plenty who aren't able to be inspired, by the methods used by school teachers , yet can be inspired by other methods . By no means do I know anything of Greg Mellor and nor do I suggest because he is/was a teacher he will be no good , however I see both the positives and negatives his past profession could have within his role !

It's got nothing to do with school teaching methods, it's about being able to communicate and relate with young boys and is proven all across the league and it's not like he is a school teacher with zero background in footy, former player and a very good one at that and coached for many years.
The West Adelaide Centre of Excellence program which he was the head coach of also has produced more AFL players then any other state league club in the country.
