I ain't a huge fan of having school teachers involved in elite sport !
Many kids turn to footy , like Dusty , because they can't stand school methodology .

I'd suggest most of the difficulties students have in a school system is because of the rigid government assigned framework, and the specific curriculae that is only designed to cater to one type of learner. It's a bit different trying to get 30 students interested in long division using a government assigned method, than it is to teach one professional athlete who is being paid massive amounts of money, how to respond to a scenario in a sport that both the teacher and the athlete grew up playing and loving.

From experience most young boys excell at footy after they have conquered longitude and latitude and most importantly the Duey decimal system. It helps them find there way to training and how to find books on working out.

Please in furure, any time Greg Mellor is mentioned start it of as following.

Not Greg Miller, but Greg Mellor as the name Greg Miller still has the potential to shortern tiger suporters life span.

i got an exam tommrow on bivariate data, that's really gonna help me kick a footy, and show people that you 'don't argue' with me ;)

It's got nothing to do with school teaching methods, it's about being able to communicate and relate with young boys and is proven all across the league and it's not like he is a school teacher with zero background in footy, former player and a very good one at that and coached for many years.
The West Adelaide Centre of Excellence program which he was the head coach of also has produced more AFL players then any other state league club in the country.
As I said TCT I have little knowledge of his background , from what you've pointed out he sounds impressive . My point was that the profession of teaching , which some where saying was a huge benefit, IMO has no bearing on someones ability to coach or develop footballers !:thumbsu:

I have often wondered what exactly a development coach does. I always assumed it was something of a mentor role for any player who needs help. And they would no doubt go and seek players out one on one and help them with everything. As opposed to the line coaches who are more strategy focused and much more game specific.

Graham Henry was a high school principal. World cup winning All Black coach who maintained an 85% win ratio over 8 yrs. I don't think guys like Dusty have a problem with a teachers methodology more with what they are being taught. I'd be rather surprised If he had a problem with his PE teachers methodology, but I suspect he wouldn't have been keen on what his English teacher had to say, especially on public speaking.

It said in the paper he was being courted by the West Coast Eagles and the NT Thunder,

As Bojangles said I've heard he's had interest from clubs over the past few years as well but chose to stay put.

Glad he decided to make the move for the Tigers.

On the topic of school teachers and alike I think it's unfair to say that people only leave because of "teaching methodology", I know lots of people left school simply becuase they new they could be earning money as an apprentice or they don't see the point in learning math methods regardless of how or who is teaching it to them.

Remember Mark Neeld had a strong background as a techer in the education system and he oversaw the Pies premiership backline and this year a midifeld that earnt it's spot in the Grand Final.

Sounds like you might have a little inside info Spluff. I'm PE trained and have also worked as a trainer/coach. Also had Mark williams as a teacher when he crossed from port Adel to collingwood in the 80's. Very different animal outside of the classroom he was. As I am, part of my reasons for leaving teaching. As some have pointed out working with professional young, highly motivated RFC players extremely different to working with high/primary school students. But the teaching skills, the positive ones very transferable to the professional sporting environment.;)

Yes the same Dustin who left school as he lost interest with the methods used by teachers , went to Sydney with his father and through his involvement with football is now a household name !
He was only an example there are plenty who aren't able to be inspired, by the methods used by school teachers , yet can be inspired by other methods . By no means do I know anything of Greg Mellor and nor do I suggest because he is/was a teacher he will be no good , however I see both the positives and negatives his past profession could have within his role !

Then again maybe he left school at 15 because he was a dumb jerk. Plenty of great footballers are/were dumb jerks.

Blaming school methodology is just a modern day mamby pamby new age sook fest.

Exactly , some by school methodology are considered dumb jerks , yet by football methodology are considered greats .
