Both players have elite kicking skills and were high picks from SA. A few years between them but both have a large part of their career still to go.

Griffen is turning 26 this year whilst Gibbs just turned 23.

Who do you think will have the better career?

Griff, and I say that with complete bias, but I honestly believe he will. He's getting too old too fast though :(

Up to 1 B&F. Now if Boydy doesn't keep stealing them, he should get another few before he retires :thumbsu:

Geez... I would like to say Griffen because he is one of my favourite footballers, but I have to go with Gibbs. Griffen is one of those guys who has good pace, excellent disposal, hardness and good football smarts. It baffles me how he isn't already a top 10 player in the game. He should be, but there seems to be something holding him back. I love the guy and truly hopes he becomes a champion, but he's leaving it late to fulfil his "potential".

Gibbs has all the tools and it looks only a matter of time before he makes the transition from a very good player to elite.

Gibbs. Actually has a chance to win a premiership too

And what part of Carlton's recent record suggests that? Nice troll, anyway. Really adding to the thread.

You'd have to go Griffen. Proven finals player, club best and fairest. Better clearance player than Gibbs and a real game breaker.

Well the dogs flag window has well and truly closed while the blues is quite open as can be seen by a steady rise helped by players such as gibbs himself. He's just such calm player who's disposal not only never lets you down but can be elite. I expect large things of him this season

Ummm ... a young team missing the PF by 3pts with an undermanned side playing in Perth

I gotta go with Gibbs. Damn that guy is versatile. Kingy was referring to it on 360 the other night, how Gibbs was doing really well in the midfield this preseason but he'd be the first guy he'd shift back into a shaky defense to help cover Jammo/Laidler/Duigan's loss, as he can beat his own man, rebound mad, and reads the ball so well he chops out the ball or helps out his teammates. And last year he played the last 7 or so games mid/forward and kicked 14 goals.

Gibbs really needs to take his game to another level and to me it's pretty obvious both these players have a level we haven't seen yet. Reckon Gibbs is on the verge this year though, whereas I dunno if Griff ever will.

You know Griffen is only 25, right? So in the 6 or so years he has left, we have no chance of contending again? Im very confident you're wrong.

Griffen has more runs on the board right now easily, but Gibbs has more upside long term in a team within its premiership window.

But its really a question of performance vs potential right now..

Gibbs. NFI how Griffen is winning this.

Griffen has had like three (2.5?) quality years. At 25.

Gibbs has been a key player for Carlton since his second year and the last four have been quality. At 23.

No way known Griffen will have anything like the career Gibbs will, he's already behind.

People don't rate Gibbs because he doesn't play the midfield, but his situation is like that of Deledio. He doesn't play midfield because he plays everything else better than any of Carlton's midfielders would, not because he's isn't a terrific player.

Spot on Lamaros Griffen has no where near the versalitity that Gibbs has.

Gibbs by quite some!!

This is something I really, really don't understand when people talk about Griffen not being versatile. He is extremely so. Just because he plays midfield most (since that is his best position), doesn't mean he can't play anywhere else.

He has played HBF, HFF, wing, right in the middle, loose man in defense, even as a leading full forward on occasion. Along with Cross, he is our designated 3rd man up as well.

There isn't a single position on the ground he cant play, as he has shown in his career to date.

You dont have no chance...but by the time you cycle around for your next premiership window he will be towards the end of his career... so he has 2 yrs max in a premiership window which is being totally generous. Whereas gibbs has a premiership window of 3 to 5 years depending on how lists develop. and then another premiership window of 1-2 yrs just like griffen potentially has.

Griffen is versatile but in comparison to gibbs who actually has a utility role in his team which he has proven himself in would mean he is more versatile by performance....not much you can do in that case.

Yeah, I agree. I was more referring to the fact that people continue to say Griffen isn't versatile, which he definitely is.

Gibbs is pretty much the definition of a utility though.

Hate to say it but Squibbsy. I think he's soft, unaccountable and overrated, but if he can work on actually hardening up he'll be a gem. Griffin is perennially injured, a gun, but Gibbs IMO

I can't believe I just posted that

Totally agree, needs to harden up like murph did last year to become a true gun/A grader.

Griff hasnt been injured for awhile? i had him in DT/SC but will now trade him out because i dont want to lose $$ on him from his hand injury even if he plays rnd 1

What the? Griffen perenially injured?

He did his knee in 07 (i think? maybe 06 actually) and had a twisted bowel at the same time, but other than that has hardly had anything. Maybe a 1 week thing here and there. Very rarely, anyway.

To put it in perspective, Griffen has played 143 games. Deledio has played 149 or something. Both taken from the same draft, and Lids has only missed like 2 games in his career.

No idea where you got the idea Griffen is always injured, eth-dog.

Griffen is also one of the hardest players in our team, in terms of body pressure, and hitting contests hard. Last year he really stepped up in that area.

Murphy was never soft though. He used to be thin and hence played his early football as an outside player but he always puts his head over the ball.

Gibbs does not.
