Yeah sorry all, but I'm out. Circumstances have changed and I am not going to be able to provide a good weekly write up.

I had Dunn so if anyone wants him, go ahead. Otherwise, I'll try to do a write up when I can.

Pros:

I thought that JAck had a pretty good game. Struggled early, but worked back well late.

Whilst he didn't hit the packs as hard as he could have he was able to tap the ball to advantage on a number of occasions from a contested situation.

Cons:

One more week and we are still waiting for that break out game.

Whilst i don't think his team mates do any favours he failed again to impose himself as the in forcer across half forward. I look at Tappy and wish that Watts would throw himself at the contest in the same manner.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes. But i wouldn't be surprised if he was sub'd out.

Pros:

He was better than last week but I have still awarded him a six for his efforts on the ground & would have him in our top 3 players. If a player in our top three gets a six I guess that says a lot about our performance against the Hawks.

What was good about his game? I had a whole paragraph written out but my computer lost the info, for what reason I don’t know so I’ll just give some bullet points:

- Contested possession 12, he was able to get his own ball & at times get it into the forward 50 for us.
- Another reasonable performance against the Hawks in a game we were absolutely dominated in.
- Inside 50’s, good that he got the ball in there but I think a lot of the time it was from a defensive position.
- SC & DT points have been reasonable for his price, not that that matters but we need something to look forward to.

Cons:

On the other hand despite winning his own ball his efficiency & some of his decision making early this season has been a bit of a worry. We are used to Sylvia backing himself & taking on the game & bombing it from 55-60. But I have noticed what I think is not a lack of confidence but a more concerted effort to include his teammates in the game which sometimes has led to turnovers & restricting his natural game.

He did not score at all which is not the norm for Sylvia & I put this down to the fact that he spent much of his time in a defensive midfield position & the ball was turned over before he could break the lines through the centre & get a shot on goal. He did have 8 inside 50’s but which is great but I think that reflects what I am saying that he was forced to send the ball inside 50 from a defensive position.

I would like to see him try to play forward of the centre next following the ball back only for kick outs because if he can get it on the back flank with some space he can transitions the ball forward quickly.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes no doubt, I currently have him third in the B&F.

Pros:

Jack played really well in the first half. He took "that mark" which i think we can all agree that we breathed a smallest sigh of relief.

Jack continues to win plenty of the ball forward of centre but fails to make the F50 his own. It will come with time and I’m pleased to see him begin to increase his ability to give repeat efforts.

Cons:

He is still a long way from having the core strength to be able to physically compete with men half his size. The cold comfort is that it will come with time and he continues to show us little glimpses.

The other con from the week end, and its just a small one. He was none existent in the second half. He may as well backed up his batman lunch box and gone home.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes. Wasn't the only red and blue passenger in the second half last week.

Round 3 2011 Melbourne vs Brisbane 10/4/11 – Result: Win 82 - 71

Cale Morton

Efficiency: 43%

DT Score: 20
SC Score: ?

Pros:

Tough week for Cale. Coming on as a sub at the end of the third quarter when you lack match experience is probably not the greatest way to come back to league footy, sure he’d be fresh but it’s hard to have an impact on the game. Managed to find a little bit of the ball, the biggest pro this week was that he actually got out on the park, but there wasn’t a whole lot more to his game than that.

Cons:

When he did find the ball he didn’t use it very well, I think there was one direct turnover that I can remember and several other questionable disposal decisions. He looks a little bit more athletic this year but I don’t think he’s ever going to put on the bulk that some people are craving. He’s just not that type of player. Would like to see him put his body on the line a bit more though, it could really help him cement his spot.

Does he keep his spot?

Give him a full game against GC, after that we can assess his performance. With the likes of Scully and McKenzie waiting in the wings (pun inten...forget it) he will have to show that he actually deserves a spot in the 21+1. Don’t write him off yet though. Players of his body type take a while to come good.

I don’t like Cale as the sub, to me it just doesn't suit his game style. I guess it was good to ease him into season 2011 but he is not an impact player. He is an endurance player who, because of his fitness can run out an entire game & I don’t think coming on late in the third quarter is using him in the best way. I think he should start next week & if they don’t want him to play a full game sub him out for someone like Petterd (If VFL form permits but from what I hear , sadly it doesn’t) or Maric.

Round 3 2011

Melbourne vs Brisbane 10/4/11 Win 82 - 71

Rating: 6/10
Kicks: 13
Handballs: 9
Marks: 3
Tackles: 3
Hit outs: 1
Free Kicks: 0 for/2 against
Efficiency: 77%
Contested possessions: 12
Uncontested Possessions: 9

Assists: 2
Inside 50’s: 5

DT Score: 75
SC Score: 86

Pros:

Another reasonable performance without being outstanding, I know in my season preview that’s exactly what I wanted from him – Consistency, but I would hoping for a little more out put than breaking even. He looks like his body will give him 20+ games this year.

Cons:

Discipline was an issue for him at one point, after giving away a free in the closing minutes of the game (although a soft free) he then proceeds to give away a 50 meter penalty as a crucial part of the game, it was only the return of the ball & you see heaps of them every week ignored, but don’t give the ump the opportunity to make a stupid call at a crucial juncture in the game because they will & with Ray the ump he always wants to impose himself on the game. He needs to think before he acts & just let small thing like a soft free not bother him.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes no, unless he completely drops off he will never be dropped.

And round 4:

Colin Sylvia

Round 4 2011

Melbourne vs Gold Coast 17/4/11 Win 159 - 69

Rating: 7.5/10
Kicks: 20
Handballs: 11
Marks: 7
Tackles: 7
Hit outs: 0
Free Kicks: 2 for/3 against
Efficiency: 77%
Contested possessions: 11
Uncontested Possessions: 19
Clearances: 5
Assists: 2
Inside 50’s: 9

Goals: 1
Behinds: 2

DT Score: 132
SC Score: 117

I was expecting Sylvia to dominate this game & coming into the second quarter I was a little disappointed with his output. He managed to rally a bit in the second then took the game on in the third quarter & was BOG in the second half. He did exactly what he needed to do during the game & his rating of 7.5 is the best I’ve given him this year (it would have been an eight but it was against the Gold Coast.

Pros:

Col had a great game but a few things really stood out.

- Nine inside 50’s was a great out put & he set up a number of goals either directly or indirectly.
- His pressure in the forward line a few times was great & he helped keep the ball inside our forward line which allowed either a turnover or spillage which resulted in shots on goal.
- Col is leading the competition in both inside 50’s & goal assists which shows he is getting forward of the ball in a position to get the ball in our forward & give us scoring chances.
- If he kicked straight he could have had three & since most of us rate Col as a goal kicking forward I’m happy to see he had some chances too.

Cons:

Nothing really stood out & you can’t pot a player after the game he had. I would have liked it more if he made his mark on the game a little earlier but as I said, no complaints from me although his efficiency was 65%.

Does he keep his spot?

Is the pope catholic?
