Alright I think it's time we steered discussion towards the upcoming national draft since there seems to be a hell of a lot less interest this season, so I decided we're going to play a game, who do you think pick 16 will be? Now I know alot of you feel inclined to go for Varcoe but remember how we all thought we were going to pick up Wood because he was a South Aussie at number 8 last year?

Anyway I think - Nathan Jones! :)

i dont care who we get as long as he dosnt knick off as soon as he thinks he's worth something

As long as he's South Australian and he's not a HB or HF type I don't care who we get. It's not every year we are going to get the opportunity to have TWO picks ahead of Port. We must use that advantage to choose the 2 best SA lads available at pick 16 and 17.

I'd be happy with either Hughes, Varcoe or Obst but I also think there is some real quality juniors coming out of Sturt too, and whilst there is a certain amount of bias in my thinking, the proof is in the pudding when you see the likes of Pearce, Monfries, Thompson, Eckermann, so to take a chance on Bode or Rischbieth we wouldn't be losing. :thumbsu:

who's nathan jones?? I agree with the poster above me that you just have to pick the best player regardless of their state. No good picking a SA guy if he turns out to be a dud. Although if we had kept our picks and picked SA ppl in recent yrs we wouldnt of done too badly. And ideally we need talent tall forwards and class midfielders obviously, but with the picks we have the good ones atleast will be gone by then.

My guess for pick 16 will be

Cleve Hughes - 192/84 (Norwood)

Pick 17 will be

Travis Varcoe - 179/72 (central Districts)

I will be rapt if we can get 2 of varcoe, hughes or pfeiffer with pick 16 and 17.

Nathan Jones

Statistics:
2004: 4 games, 1 goal, averaged 11.7 PPG
2005 TAC Cup: 11 games, 5 goals, average 28.5 PPG
2005 U18 Champs: 3 games, 0 goals, averaged 22.7 PPG

Award Votes:
TAC Cup Coaches Award: 11 votes
TAC Cup Morrish Medal: 12 votes

Background:
When the big games took place, Nathan Jones stood up. He did it in both the U18 championships and the TAC Cup Grand Final. In the championships, he was well up the statsheet for clearances, inside 50s and rebound 50s – the territory he is able to cover assisted by his great aerobic capacity. He is especially good at getting behind the player with the ball and dashing past to get a handball receive (if you trust TAC stats he averaged 11.5 handball receives per game), and with such a strong powerful kick inside 50 it can be an effective style of play. A combination of school footy and injuries, including a broken hand suffered late in the championships, limited his time in the TAC Cup. His Grand Final performance where he accumulated close to 40 possessions in the losing side was a highlight and virtually single-handedly kept the Stingrays in the game and demonstrated his highly competitive attitude.

Strengths:
- Strong inside player; excels at clearing the ball at stoppages
- Endurance is excellent; able to cover lots of ground during a game
- Powerful, penetrating kick even off one step
- His ‘big game’ form was excellent this year
- AFL ready in 2006

Weaknesses:
- Already quite well developed, weighs about 85kg so had an advantage there in the TAC Cup against less developed rovers in opposition sides.
- Good at his type of game playing on the ball – but you could say that he doesn’t really work forward into space and take marks, relies heavily on clearance work and handball receives from running to generate most of his possession.
- A different build to others below 180cm, and in return is no where near as quick

Footydraft.com comment: Put his name forward with an outstanding U18 National Championships and TAC Cup Grand Final, where his ball winning ability in close and his high work rate were a highlight. Appears a definite top 10 pick, and quite possibly in the Top 5. He should be right to get some AFL in next season.

so you should be.

varcoe you might
hughes would be a surprise
pfeiffer only if the other clubs have lost their sences. He is rated top 10 by a number of clubs outside of SA.

Great choices, I would love it if that happened. I think you also have a good combination there. A quick midfielder and a tall key forward would be the two player types I'd be looking for at 16 and 17.

Mate I'll run down Rundle Mall naked if we pick these guys up.

i dont want varcoe for reasons stated in other thread so hopefully its not him, i will be over the moon if its Nathan Jones but he will be long gone by that stage....

for me Scott Pendlebury.

This is what I think will happen, not what I would do:

16 - Varcoe
17 - Pendlebury

Pendlebury - outside, athletic wingman. Why are so many of these type of players being linked to us. How many Luke Jericho's can one team have?

Springbok, I guarantee that a big name player will slide to us. Hopefully we capitalise. It has happened in all draft since they were invented.

On the news tonight they had ours and ports 'predictions' and the only ones from SA they had going before our picks were Hurn and pfeiffer, so maybe Cleve Hughes isnt rated as highly as some on the board and in the mock drafts think. Doubt port would of said anything truthfully though.

Going by the looks of Mick Moylan, I doubt they have much idea on football. The fact that they traded for Lonie proves it.

I just think that Cleve Hughes will slip. Cleve is widely predicted to go to Bulldogs, but if somone like Dowler, Clark, Kennedy or Ryder slip down to the Bulldogs, I think they will choose them ahead of Cleve, and Cleve might slip down to us.

I think one of those 5 talls will be available at our pick.

nah with regards to Mick Moylan i think they know what they are doing, they always give bugger all away, which we are starting to do to a bit as well. Funny how NC expects to get three long term players out of this draft too. Considering we'll have 4-5 picks jimmy better pick up the strike ratio.

Changed my mind. Occured to me, why would we pick Pendlebury if someone like Rischbeith is still around and from SA.

16) Varcoe
17) Rischbeith

I'd be happy with that, but naturally Varcoe and Hughes are the two I want most (Hurn aside of course)
