Scott Gumbleton today revealed he is taking a long-term approach to his rehabilitation from a serious back injury.
The No.2 selection in the 2006 National Draft says while a return to football this season has not been 100 percent ruled out, medical staff are taking a conservative approach to his rehabilitation and are progressing his recovery with the expectation of getting him fully fit for the 2010 season.

There has been a bit of talk about the possibility of Gumby coming back sooner rather than later but it seems like the club are adopting the catious and smart approach. Get your body right and we will see you in 2010 Gumby. You should be fit as a fiddle by then! ;);)

Disagree, this is far from awesome news. I really do hope his body comes right, but this is becoming just a little too familiar for me. Last year "Yeah, we'll get him right for the preseason so he can have a big 2009." 2009 games = 0.

Really hope you get your body right mate, but this isn't giving me a lot of hope writing off another season.

They are taking a conservative approach mate. You don't **** around with back injuries. Smart common sense move by the club.

Hopefully not literally.

Well it pretty much is literal.

If the guy is fit then he will be playing seniors.

If he's not playing it's because he's injured.

Noone should be holding their breath on this kid anymore.
We've just got to hope that he gets some luck on his side.

i'm pretending that he's not on the list.

If he produces anything that comes close to the wraps, then it'll be a massive bonus.

Not expecting ANYTHING at all.

I don't see the point in resting him IF he is ready. At the start of the year we were told it was a 12 week injury, this has already pasted. We have also been told that he has been training with the main groups etc.
If he is ready I see no point in resting him until 2010, he needs to play games, be it a quarter or two at bendigo.

Ive already got a jumper with 3 on the back so i would like to see 1 or 2 games at bendigo no rush tho. I dont want to go with my back up plan of adding a 0 to it ;)

Let’s hope he doesn't turn out like another famous number 3.

One of Kevin Sheedy's numerous love childs. Aaron Henneman.

He has been out of footy for a couple years now. I would be surprised if he can make our best 22 by the time he gets fit.

You are all way too quick to write off Gumbleton. He was drafted at Number 2 as a KPP and we knew from the start it would be a long process to get him into the correct physical and mental state to have a serious impact at AFL level. The long lay off hasn't been ideal but realistically he wasn't going to come straight into the side and tear it up from the beginning. Some also forget he is only 20 years or age and won't be hitting his peak until his mid 20's, at least. It is all an ongoing process.

He is an impressive young colt and was running laps at training yesterday without any obvious discomfort and taking the odd snap at goal.

We need to continue to be patient and wait for his imminent return. He has an important role to play in the extremely promising future at EFC.
