Im english born and no Idea bout NWS symbolism.

Started thinking about the Welshmen and Thought Celts, Druids and also Welsh Dragons

In fact dragons would e quite a muticutlural symbol - heres the welsh one

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Wales_2.svg

There are dragons in almost every culture. Great for multicuttural west sydney -

Unfortunately NRL st george might not be too happy about it !!

Dragonslayers ?

Could go like the "suns" to raise mental pictures of the beach

NSW "Fire", "Flames" "Firebreathers", Fireaters, Firefighters, Fireballs, Fireys could evoke ideas of the CFA like the suns make you think about the lifeguards

Looking at olympic park suggests olympians There is Plato/Hades of the underworld, Hecules (strength) Titan Mercury Posidon/Neptune (of the sea)
Another one - a bit oblique is Nemesis - god of revenge

Sydney fairgrounds suggests carousels, rollercoasters (I like that one) Wipeout, waltzers Cakewalks !!!

From the 'showgrounds thers the Woodchoppers, Drovers, swagmen, bushies, showmen, showbags, Rams, steers, Angry angus

From Homebush former chemical works therse chemical burns, Agent Orange, isotopes

Sorry, just thinking out loud - Like Nemesis, Rollercoasters, Swagmen, Fireballs, Druids or Dragons {if it was possible}

Red Green and white as colours

the CARNIES!

they can have a harlequin guernsey always looks good

I still like HOODs
FUNNELWEBS
KOMMANDOS

and now CARNIES

and hows about BUNYIPS?
(bit unfair to the existing Bunyips in Gipslnd league, but, such is life, here, have a new jumper)

basically Im in love with all my own suggestions, I mean I like some of the others but... just see so much more in the above... (yes, Im aware I have...isues....)

dont hate Giants,
do hate Spratans, not actual spartans from sparta, (the remnants of this once great city-state now a village about the size of Bunyip, Vic...)

cant quite hate Wolves, because, you know, pretty cool, just not Aussie

Diamondbacks not bad either (can ALSO have a harlequin guernsey - will be classy in any setting!) ok i think its my preferred after mine own suggestions

(still think Hoods would RULE! but ok there is a bit too much naughty in it, cant see it getting up )

Chinese Dragons anybody ?

.

Dragaons have appeal in quite a few cultures. Perfect fot multicultural western sydney.

Big problem that the NRL already have it.

Trid to thing of a name which resonates with dragons but "Soup" "Pete" "Puff" is all I could think of - not good

I cant think of anything, unless they keep the location as initials - give it less emphasis.

Up north GC Suns is what appears in the fixture list

GWS Giants or GW Giants or NSW Giants

A bit like calling the other team SFC Swans

GWS Nemesis ? sounds like a battleship

I also thought of Trojans not Spartans.

A small elite force smuggled into a powerful city who led to its downfall.

It als sits with sheedys idea of actively recruiting overseas talent

(should sheedys team be called the martians ?

Incidentally, would swans supporters naturally call the new team the "Westies" ?

Interesting thing I found in WIKI for swans

Swans feature strongly in mythology. In Greek mythology, the story of Leda and the Swan recounts that Helen of Troy was conceived in a union of Zeus disguised as a swan and Leda, Queen of Sparta. Other references in classical literature include the belief that upon death the otherwise silent Mute Swan would sing beautifully - hence the phrase swan song; as well as Juvenal's sarcastic reference to a good woman being a "rare bird, as rare on earth as a black swan", from which we get the Latin phrase rara avis, rare bird.

I'm not trying to be an ancient history nazi or anything but it's actually the other way around. The Greeks smuggled themselves into the city of Troy (where the Trojans lived) via their famous wooden horse and then reeked havoc after dark.

So in your example Sydney is actually Troy, and GWS are the Greeks.

GWS Greeks then? Nah sounds shite.

Just stick with Wolves and be done with it! :thumbsu:

I'm aware of the story but
Perception is greater than reality. trojans is now associated with the guys in the horse not the city of troy.
Trojans has a nice ring.

Most of the designs in here based on wolves are american inspired.
Even though wolves were found everywhere, the perception is american - the designs reinforce that

I disagree.

When I think of Trojans I think of the guys who got screwed. The name also doesn't have anything to do with West Sydney, so if you object to Wolves being too "American" then you would discount Trojans along the same lines of non-relation. Not that I think the name has to relate to the region, because some of the best names in the league don't...such as Lions, Tigers and Eagles.

Wolves is good because West Sydney Wolves rolls off the tongue and the Wolf is one of the natural predators of the Swan.

Perfect! :thumbsu:

It would be a predator if it wasnt near extinct - the swan is protected.

Anyway I dont really care, just thinking out loud.

Personally I hope they are western ...something rather than GW...something because that way Hawthorn wont be pushed further down the alphabetical ladder

Just because you didn't pay attention in history doesn't mean no-one else did.. That's like saying the Russian Tsars overthrew the incumbent Socialist government out of office when they stormed the winter palace..

And Trojans are probably more well known these days as a brand of condoms.. So probably not awesome for a team moniker..

Jesus, what a reaction !!!

its a bloody legend anyway. Not fact.

I'd say the modern assosiation with trojans is the computer virus varity (looking forward to sone nerd pulling me up on THAT...its not technically a virus. etc)

As I said, like I give a rats what your club is called. "Westies" is your real nickname

people say domain names don't have anything to do with the actual name of the club? yeah a sydney based marketing company registered giants type domains and a few wolves ones.

What stands out is that

Domain Name: wswolves.com.au
Registrar ID: Melbourne IT
Registrar Name: Melbourne IT
Status: ok

Registrant: Australian Football League
Registrant ID: ACN 004155211
Eligibility Type: Company

Is registered by the AFL... so it must leave us some legitimacy to the fact that they may indeed be the wolves after all :P

actually it is spelt walers and is thought to relate to a horse that came from Western Sydney for WW1

http://www.lighthorse.org.au/resour...the-waler...-a-breed-of-horses-legend-or-fact

Wow I totally missed that!

I thought they were going the Ishmael angle, but the lighthorsemen association is actually quite good. Obviously the term "Waler" as a horse breed isn't common knowledge but I suppose in time it would become better known, especially if tied to a decent horse mascot.

New South Walers Football Club? It's in the maybe box for me. Wolves is still numero uno though.

Walers is the best suggestion ive heard by far.
even 'West Sydney Walers' would work nicely.
I quite like that its a bit obscure - creates a bit of story around the identity. But we all know they wont pick a name with strong local/historical reference, and will instead pick somthing meaningless like Giants :(

Yeah I'm definitely coming around to it. I think if they went in that direction though the "New South Walers" name would be too hard to resist, it's just absolutely begging to be done!!! It kinda works well with the Canberra association aswell that they are trying to build. I know that people from the ACT don't consider themselves apart of NSW, but it includes them more than a name like "West Sydney" will ever be able to do. I also like that (according to that link above) the Waler breed is almost a bit mythological in nature, which gives it a bit of an "aura" if you know what I mean. Especially when tied to the heroics of the ANZACS.

I wonder if its on the radar down there at GWS?

Actually, Troy is - or was- a real city, though the wooden horse bit fits more to legend than fact.

If you are right about "... the modern assosiation with trojans is the computer virus ...", then 'Trojans' is probably not such a good name anyway. Who wants a computer virus as a mascot?

Then again, the Romans did credit a Trojan refugee (Aenaus) as the ancestor of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, which grew to the mightiest of empires. hmmm.

BTW - The 'Titans' always amuse me as a name. They are the biggest losers in Greek mythology - smashed by the younger Olympian gods, chained and banished to the deepest darkest chasms beneath the earth. Good this be an omen for the GC Titans with the younger Suns starting up?

Yeah so am I.

How about the West Sydney Morons Who Think People That Are Fooled By Giant Wooden Animals Given To Them By Their Mortal Enemies Would Make Great Footy Mascots.

Nah doesn't really roll off the tongue.

Shouldn't the name have something to do with invading Rugby League heartland?

eg. Pioneers, Predators, Vultures, Barbarians

Giants, Wolves, Trojans are all a bit lame IMHO.
