GWS can choose to have anywhere between 44-50 players, so I'd be surprised if they take all 6 in the PSD.

How many can they have on their list next year?

By the time they have to cut back their list and they bring in a few more recruits next year it is going to make it hard for them to manage their list.

You may be right, they might decide not to fill their full list.

ND picks get a min 2 years right?

What about PSD picks?

Another factor for GWS will be the salary cap. If they select 5 less players they can front load contracts even more and free up even more space to chuck at Pendles et. al. next year.

As I understand it, GWS can have 44-50 senior listed players fo 2012-14, then it starts to drop: 44-48 in 2015, 42-46 in 2016, 40-44 in 2017, 38-42 in 2018 and finally 38 in 2019

So, if I'm right, GWS can have say 44 senior listed players this year and then draft the minimum 3 more at the end of next year without delisting anyone.

They're overpaying Scully massively in 2012 (and I'm assuming they're doing something similar Ward, Davis et al.) so it's not like they'll have any immediate salary cap issues.

Remember they will have more uncontracted player signings next year too so they will have more than three additions to the list.

If they can have 5 less players this year that saves them around $250,000 if they are on minimum salary. Why wouldn't they want front load even more to free up an extra quarter million to throw at uncontracted players next year? it might just make the difference and if not they can continue to front load in preparation for when they have to start resigning their young guns.

Yeh but players like brogan, cornes, power and mcdonald will be gone... So there is 4 straight away... Maybe cornes and power has another year left... But the rest, i doubt

Re: PSD and Rookie draft discussion

Of course they'll have more than 3 new recruits next year, I was just illustrating that having 44 on the senior list in 2012 and 50 in 2013 is possible and may be to their advantage.

Yep agreed.

Re: PSD and Rookie draft discussion

Sheedy said today that they'll add 1-2 players in the psd which will give them an inaugural senior list of 45-46.

He also said they'll sign 2-3 out of contract players at the end of 2012 and made mention of salary cap tightness...

So if they want a couple of mature players with minimal salary cap impact Urquhart, Pfeiffer &/or Lower would fit the bill
