Not sure if all you Rock boffins are aware of this, but Simon Cowell (yes he is a bit of a knob) is doing his bit for the Haiti Earthquakes, by putting together a single, which he and others believe can equal if not better the efforts of Band Aid, all those years ago

Proceeds from the record will go towards relief effort

The single will be a cover of REM's "Everybody Hurts", and he so far has the following contributors

Mariah Carey ,Jon Bon Jovi, Miley Cyrus (:() Susan Boyle, Kylie Minogue, Leona Lewis Rod Stewart, Cheryl Cole JLS, Take That/Robbie Williams , Michael Bublé, Westlife, Alexandra Burke, James Morrison, Mika and James Blunt

Im not too sure how this is going to sound, but at the end of the day it shouldnt matter, because people will buy it, and Haiti will receive the help it needs

Expected release on the 7th of Feb

Is more like it.

I'm sure it will raise money. I won't be buying though - I've made a direct donation to the Haiti Red Cross appeal.

if you haven't already donated to the Haitian cause, but feel compelled to buy this single because it will do good. then there is something really wrong with you

"Linkin Park, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morissette, Slash,
The All-American Rejects, Hoobastank, Kenna, Enrique Iglesias and Lupe Fiasco
team up with Music For Relief to aid earthquake victims"

not too much improvement from the last list.

Anyone have a grenade?

Nice idea, but 'Everybody Hurts'? Really? Something about that just seems...off. Like they're trying to shoehorn a vaguely-associable but well-known track into a situation it just wasn't written for.
Well the idea was thought of by Brittish PM Gordon Brown, but im not sure if he chose the song aswell

Apparently the Americans are redoing the "We are the World" song from the mid-80's.
There is a clip of Lionel Richie and Quincey JOnes talking about it which is supposedly real cringe-worthy

Does anyone have a link ?

i suppose cowell could have good intentions (though it does come across as a bit of an alien concept from him), but stuff like this just seems like a public relations exercise first and foremost. it continues the practice of releasing singles to keep musicians/etc at the forefront of the public's minds. we buy the paul mccartney coaster, we buy the bono coaster. money spent on charity is money spent on publicity, but yes yes, haiti gets the money.
