Hampson...

I don't think Hampson is ready for AFL just yet. I really thought that he was a development project. But I've been proven wrong with the Hammer getting a few games this season. Hasn't shown much, but hopefully he'll be a good player in the near future.

That's what I was meaning to say. I don't think there is much of a point playing him in the seniors while he's so undeveloped. You may say that it is good experience, but he is doing next to nothing.

Loving that he is getting LOTS of game time against some good ruckman. he is developing nicely imo, concidering he hasnt played footy for long, massive up in this fella

As long as he's making it a little harder for opposition ruckman to tap, its good enough for me. Tough comment to say it was pointless having him in the team last night. Cloke wouldn't of had enough time forward to kick 4 if he wasnt in.

Hampson's going to be a star. Glad Ratten's giving him plenty of gametime now. Looks to be about 202-203cm. Definitely taller than Kruezer and Jacobs. Needs to add some weight over the pre-season obviously. The guy is blisteringly quick, and it'll just take time before he learns how to use his athleticism. :)

Big deal doesn't mean anything. I was skeptical when Carlton drafted him at such an early pick in a great draft. To me he looks lost and hasn't got a good football brain. I hope the kid proves me wrong, but i have doubts he will make it.

in the words of sam newman, you idiot:rolleyes:

The guy who started the tread said he can't mark, i stuck that clip in because if i'm not wrong, that is Hampson taking some good marks.

So how does that not mean anything?

While it's true he's not really moved forward at all in his on field development this year (and thus has been a disappointment for mine) his upside is still massive and was always going to take even longer than the stardard (long) lead-time for big fellas. Lets have this discussion in 2010.

sounds fair to me. :thumbsu:

I have just finished re-watching the game and although Kreuze is a mile in front of him, I remember noting his huge leaps at the first two bounces of the second half (- which totally negated Charman) and thinking that is good enough for now :thumbsu:

Im not having a go at hammo , but

at the end of the day there will be people coming out saying hes raw and blah blah blah .... but droping uncontested marks seriosly?? he would not make a goalies arseh*le......

Hampson will be fine. Pretty sure I've seen Carey, Brown and Fev drop uncontested chesty's before. He just had it spent a little early.

Doesn't take long for people around here to look for negatives in some of our kids. I'd hate to think our recruiters look at underaged talent so simplistically because I'm pretty sure I saw Michael Hurley drop a chest mark today.

And you're a recruiter and a good judge of talent. ;)

I guess you didn't see Hampson trusted to clear the ball from defence by his teammates in the Port game in SA.

Hampson kept running to the next contest and plucked a terrific overhead mark running with the flight that wasn't his to begin with.

He isn't bad at ground level for a bigman and stayed involved after a throw in to wrap up Rodan in a great tackle at Telstra Dome this year.

Hampson's second efforts are terrific because he shepherded Grigg in for a goal the same game.

He'll be a freak with his athleticism, speed and mobility.

He jumped all over Brogan in a NAB cup game at the centre bounces before pushing forward to earn another free in the last quarter.

Brogan was worried about his leap and gave away another free kick.

Goal. :thumbsu:

Hampson has been signed for three years because has a heap of potential and it will take another two years for him to become an AFL ruckman.

He isn't as naturally strong and as big as Kreuzer.

Why so impatient? :thumbsd:

Not very often we're going to agree TG, but I agree with your post.

And to answer the question you ask in the final line, in my opinion, some people are so impatient because they've seen the freakish ability of Kreuzer this season. Yet they fail to remember that Kreuzer has been playing Aussie Rules since he was a baby and has a football brain and can read the play, Hampson doesn't have that brain therefore sometimes looks a bit lost in open play. He'll come good, just needs as many minutes in competitive games as he can get.

Seriously how much time do you need , to learn how to take a simple uncontested mark ? ... im not asking him to win the ruck everytime then move forward and take screamers like cloakey , ovcoarse he is going to take time.

.... just a simple uncontested mark... its baby stuff.
........but you're not having a go.

I have clear memories of a recent youngster on our list who had a lot of trouble with marking. Took a few, but seemed to spill a lot.

Given that this kid was the AA CHF in his year, doesn't sound too good does it?

Hampson has lots of things to work on, and coming from a soccer background, marking and reading the flight of an Aussie rules ball I'm sure doesn't come as second nature to him yet......but it will.

He has taken a number of marks this year, and some very good contested and uncontested grabs. Confidence is a huge thing, and I suspect Hammer is the sort of guy who needs to beleive in his abilities a bit more.

Tap work is getting better. He is now moving around the ground like a ruck should, and presenting to the right areas, and for a guy who has played <10 games, he will be fine.

His marking will improve in time. He's got other attributes, especially athleticism and general mobility around the ground.

Didn't help that Hurley was on one leg at the time. ;)

Wouldn't worry too much at this stage. Think he is just lacking confidence. Has anyone noticed what he is like for the Bullants. Does he seem more sure of himself when playing there? From memory he took some very good contested marks up forward in one of the later games last year playing for Carlton.

thats your opinion and you are entitled to that .. but in my eyes if i was having a go at him i would say something along the lines of ... hampson is shit drop him to the ressies and delist him at the end of the year the bloke cannot mark to save himself, the peanut.... thats having a go.

by the way i have not said anything about his contested marking ability...
even though the only contested marks ive seen him take were last season.

just cant take a mark when his by himself.

You are a complete idiot.

He moves around the ground great, he has a really good kick, and shown in the videos he has a great leap and can mark the ball.

You have to understand that people make mistakes, I'm sure 9 out of 10 of the marks that he takes during a game you wouldn't be able to take for the life of you. Get off the PC and go back to watching the TV. You don't make a fool of yourself sitting in front of the TV.

And also about Jacobs. from what i saw of him (only seen 1-2 games) he doesn't look as good as Hampson does ATM.

Sound very confident you do to call fellow posters idiots because you do not agree with them.

Hampson looks lost and is still learning the basics of the game. He has shown little for the Bullants apart from potential. Jacobs is well ahead of him because Jacobs is a natural player who understands the game. It is a great shame that Jacobs has not got a well deserved seniors birth. It is Jacobs who gets in the best more often than Hampson.

It is okay to question Hampson's development without being jumped on by fellow supporters. He has a long way to go and the match committtee know it.

This kid is an athletic freak and the last time I witnessed something comparable was a 17 year old kid by the name of Kouta playing his first practice game in Rosebud. Lots of similarities there. Kouta had no idea about the game and went through a steep learning curve but you knew he was special, just needed to be patient.

So at this stage he is a dumb footballer due to having switched codes late but will be something special. It is for this reason we picked him ahead of his team mate and fellow ruckman who was Queensland's first choice in the under 18's in Brent Renouf. Excellent pick at 17 by Wayne Hughes.

I would prefer he be given maximum game time for the Bullants whilst Jacobs gets a chance.
