There isn't a readily available solution. Bomber Thompson would do better IMO, but he wouldnt want to.

We could have the six best kicks in the league coming out of the back line and it wouldn't change a thing given the way we play. Literally every time we come out of the back line our first instinct is to go sideways or backwards and retain possession, not once do we look towards the middle. This is what separates our game plan from Hawthorn, as soon as they see an opening through the middle they will back themselves to hit that target, which will open the game up for them and keeps the opposition honest. Our current game plan (pile of shit) doesn't keep the opposition honest, they know we won't look towards the middle and have the courage to through there so they over play the wings thus giving us no options that will eventually lead to a down the line kick were we will be out numbered or we try and play through with hands, in which case we turn it over through weight of pressure.

Plenty will put up their hand and then the club will go through a process. Sort of like Footscray with Beveridge, Adelaide with Pyke, WC with Simpson, Essendon with Worsfold. I'm pretty certain Hawthorn did that with Clarkson and that's worked out ok.

The point is that something has to change. We can continue with mediocrity or we can try something new.

The players can kick, but the key is manipulating free and clear players, which is the key to the hawks. Sure some aren't the best, but its getting free and not under pressure is our issue.
