Made my first contribution to wikipedia the other month. It was in the form of a paragraph left on the discusion page. Anyway was able to correct a logic error in a math proof. Regardless as to the topic I feel great to have been able to contribute to the spread of information in a positive way.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darboux's_theorem_(analysis)

So was wondering what contributions have you guys made to wikipedia (or other factual site) to help your fellow person?

Also when someone leaves a note on the disscusion page is it sent to the initial auther of the work or do they just keep looking at the page they created to keep track of the changes made?

On biographical pages I tend to leave a sentence at the end of the first paragraph. Something along the lines of

1. x is gay
2. x has struggled since revealing to the world that she is a hermaphrodite
3. Purple monkey dishwasher

Within 5 minutes though they are generally deleted.

I generally make small edits if I see a factual or spelling error on a page I'm reading, but no big contributions.

I did start the Dalyellup (where I live) page a couple of years ago though.:D

The Chief asked us to contribute to the AFL Wikipedia project so I think Weevil, Noosa Hawk and I added some details...only to find Wiki removed all our work 24 hours later :o Seems what we were doing was against Wiki's rules.

Have added to wiki Hawthorn FC page and that hasn't been removed.

The Hawthorn Football Club, nicknamed the Hawks, is an Australian rules football club playing in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club founded in 1902 is the youngest of the Victorian based teams in the AFL. The club is the most successful club of the past 50 years having won 10 Premierships, a premiership in each of the last 5 decades, including the 2008 Premiership. They play in brown and gold vertically striped guernseys. The team's motto is 'spectemur agendo' loosely translated as 'let us be judged by our acts'. Supporters of other teams often refer to Hawthorn as "the piss and shit club" in reference to their team colours.

Was this you :p

I corrected the Owen Hart article to say his death was staged as part of the wrestling storyline, but it was changed back after a couple of hours. Wrestling fans will believe anything it seems.

I've corrected a blatant error on one entry. The reason I laugh when people use a Wiki link as fact to back up their arguments. There are a lot of errors on Wiki.

And made a more blatant one more likely. Wiki is a reference isn't great, but the references that are on wiki can be a valuable source of information.

But it has alot of information about everything, and is well set out. As the person above said, it's not a good source, but is a good way to gather information.

Disagreed. ANY source on the web (or even off) can be erroneous. Wiki is no different.

By and large, the articles are written by people with a particular interest in the topic and a great deal of research has taken place. Most articles are well referenced (even if the references themselves are not authoritative).

I find most people who bag Wiki are doing so because its content does not suit the particular e-argument they are having.

Having said that, Wiki will probably never be used as a reference for more scholarly works within a particular field. I agree there.
