Had my 100th league win today (out of 130 league matches).

I sit undefeated in a 5th div league (V.166) and I am likely to promote to 4th div.

I have done this once before (got a gig in a div IV league) and I was crushed by their superior midfield. I stubbornly refuse to accept that midfield ratings is the "holy grail" or even the best means to it.

My belief is that a nice balance of a strong defence, (excellent, excellent, excellent) and a strong offence with a decent midfield will win most games.

What people consider decent is rightly very subjective.

The ratings themselves are unimportant, it is the results that count.

My long term plan has been to train multiskilled players to fill all non-defensive positions. My midfielders are all passable / solid in defence, solid / excellent in passing, and outstanding + playmaking. Wingers are even more multiskilled being passable in defence, excellent in passing, solid/excellent in playmaking, outstanding in winger.

I am currently training forwards. I have two technical forwards who I have previously trained in passing and playmaking. They are both only inadequate in scoring. I play these defensive and get reasonably good ratings from them. I have two players that I also trained passing and winger. These I play towards the wing. Both gain me very good attacking ratings. The other two forwards I have are the more traditional high scoring skill ratings. Both have passing as a secondary.

The problem is that the leadership of your coach is wretched so the effect of a MOTS or a PIC will be minimal.

Pretty sure i read somewhere that the impact of MOTS or PIC is not reduced by your coaches leadership. The significance of coach leadership is in how long you maintain the benefits of PIC and recover from the damage of MOTS. Maybe someone else can shed some light.

I have just moved above the automatic promotion line in Div 5. :) I am 3 points clear of two teams at the top of the league and still have a game against each of them remaining, but i should be able to beat them both. Div 4 here i come.

Yeah, i also thought you still get the full benefit from playing a MOTS, but depending on your coaches leadership depends on how well your team spirit recovers from it doing a PIC. Having a wretched leadership coach will take a long time to get it back to the default level (composed) so it will mean you will be stuck with midfield ratings that probably aren't your best for a while!

I think midfield is still a dominant part of the game. Although i believe in what you say in having a nice balanced outfit. It gives you a lot of variety in how you can approach games instead of having huge midfielders that suck the living hell out of your wage budget and being stuck to just the one sort of game plan by winning the midfield and not being able to save a lot of money due to their wages. I'm actually starting to balance out my team now, not long ago i bought a titanic keeper and am now saving to buy 3 or 4 magnificent defenders which can give me the option to CA against midfield dominant teams etc...

Multiskilling is definately the way to go, like yourself i'm training scoring and have 2 outstanding wingers (1 is 1 week from brilliant) with good scoring on them. It definately gives you another edge in attack when you want to focus your attacks on the wings! And i guess you can add the fact that naked players dont sell really well anymore, coincidently i only bought scorers with at least inad passing and a speciality (which can also bump up the price a little).

Unfortunately, i didn't have the cash to go all out and buy a passable or solid scorer with brilliant+ playmaking.

You're right on that.

Either way it's not really something worth using unless it's the last game of the season or you have a long run of winnable games directly after the MOTS.

You poor bastard :(

It's this same thinking that has me wallowing in Div IV facing bankruptcy warnings every second week.

Apart from this season, when I've often sacrificed side attacks to bolster midfield with some 'towards middle' action, the bulk of my defeats have come from being shaded in midfield (one or two ratings) despite being dominant all over the rest of the park.

The devs keep saying "we're continually tweaking the match engine so midfield isn't as important" but it's bollocks.

If I had my time all over again I'd buy 1 brilliant keeper, 3 formidable defenders, 2 outstanding/solid strikers and 5 ET midfielders.

Having an ET keeper, a trio of titanic defenders, a divine winger and an ET/solid striker has previously gotten me nowhere.

Hi all,
Still going along with this game despite a pretty disapointing season.
Just wondering how long it took some of you guys to start to get wins on the board?
I am now making over 100,000 per home game and have just bought a new coach solid, poor to replace my passable, poor.
This will help with my trainees. At what age and rating is it recomended to sell eg maximum profit?

Thanks

What are you training and what age are your trainees and what secondaries do they have/?

I'm training defenders with all of them at the age of 18. About 4 are excellent and the other 6 are solid.

The passing on the four excellent players is:
wretched
wretched but is excellent at set piece
weak
poor

For the 6 solid defenders:
poor
inadequate
inadequate
poor
wretched
wretched

So you have just started training defense? I'd probably keep training them for another 2 seasons or so yet before selling any. Then you could probably sell 2 to upgrade other areas of you team. The excellents should be around magnificent or world class after 2 more seasons of training? I cant remember how long they take to pop.

I trained defense and it didn't work out for me. You sacrifice results in the short term due to having no attack and midfield. I'll wait til sainter is able to reply, he's been training defense for about a year or so, so he'll be able to offer better advice

Won 5-1 away on a PIC against the 5th placed team ensuring me a top 4 finish (and the prize money that I desperately need) in my first full season. Is it 20,000 EURO or A$ for a top 4 finish? Better be EURO.

The top 2 teams both lost to lesser opposition which was surprising, that is the last 2 games that the top team has dropped which could put his promotion chances in jeopardy, which I will have to check later. He was undefeated before last week & I play him in round 13.

If training keeps going well I will have my excellent 18 y/o PM to formidable by seasons end, and my 17 y/o PM to excellent.

How did you all go this round?

The teams in 1st and 2nd may be trying to avoid promotion bobby. ;) You never know.

I won 5-3 today which puts me back into 2nd spot. I seem to concede a hell of a lot of goals.

Code:
                                P W D L F A
1. The Flycatchers 11 9 1 1 52 - 10 +42 28
2. PyroTechnics 11 8 1 2 41 - 26 +15 25
3. Southern Spirit 11 7 3 1 39 - 9 +30 24
4. The Hills 11 8 0 3 40 - 18 +22 24

Pretty close at the top, The Hills knocked off Southern Spirit 2-0 today for his first loss this season whilst i play The Flycatchers next weekend.

In the last three weeks i play...

1) Loser McGee
2) Third Placed Side
3) Second Placed Side

Now, Second Placed Side is killing it recent. Goals here there everywhere.

I'm slightly nervous to say the least. The last week could be huge.

won 3-2 PICing against the 2nd place team playing my 2nd midfield. I have now got top spot and can pic all i like and hope that i get a qualifier and lose as i dont really want to continue the trend of 8th in div 5, 1st in div vi, 8 in div v and then div vi this year.

The only person who was any realistic chance of displacing me at the top of my league has just lost his team. I will be in IV after only 3 full seasons. I will come straight back down, but at least it will be fun to be in a new series.

Well... After pretty much having this season wrapped up since about week 3, i'm ********ed.

2nd place side has signed some new players and HO has them beating me on the last week of the season which will put us on equal points. 2nd place side is 3 goals better than me in goal difference, so i can't wait to ******** it all up in two weeks time.

Another season in div 6 beckons...

Can I ask why you started another stadium redevelopment then?

If you don't think you're as good as the second placed team why wouldn't you have strengthened the squad?

Anyway, best thing to do is go back over his recent league games. Take note of the formations he uses and the match ratings he gets. If he does the same thing every week you can exploit his weaknesses. And definitely MOTS that final game.

It's not the worst thing in the world if you don't go up. Last season I not only finished with the same amount of points as the top placed team but scored exactly the same amount of goals. Ended up missing promotion by 1 goal as I had conceded one more goal than him. This season I'm unbeaten and in a far better position to be competitive in Division 5.

Could be, didn't think of that.

Won 7-0 away on a PIC, my newish striker got a hattrick (my first ever!) and am 2 points clear in 3rd position. Play top team this week which will most likely be a huge loss, but you never know.

How did the Pyrotechnics go this week mate? Is promotion on the horizon?

No you can't. But since you did... I was bored at work and was checking out how much it would cost to upgrade the stadium... Then i punched in some more figures and instead of clicking "get cost" i clicked "proceed" on the original cost i got. Next thing you know, i'm half a million down!

Last night i was looking at 2nd placed side's game and realised that they had "excellent" in one of their positions. I looked at HO (which i had done two weeks earlier and were beating them) and realised that i was now losing. It'll be a close game, but i think i'm in trouble.

2nd place side has signed some new players

According to your league's 'latest news', they have only signed one player this year, and that was back in mid January. He had a better overall rating than you in round 1 but you smashed him in midfield and won. Looking at the ratings from his and yours recent games, you should win midfield again comfortably in the last round, especially if you have been pic'ing. If you are tactically clever you are a good chance of beating him.

PS. I hope you have now fixed up the percentages for your stadium.

He's a defensive trainer (i presume, he has a back 5 in his last game) so i guess he had players that popped. I guess we'll find out next Sunday.

And no i didn't, because i wasn't trying to building anything, just f'ing around with the costs and f'd up, so i now have another 4000 terrace spots...

I'm all about the terrace :)

~PC~ i had a look at your latest ratings compared to his and its a very tough one to call! You'll smash him in the midfield no doubt, but the problem is his defense is better than your attack. His attack isn't anything to worry about either cause your defense is better than it. It could go either way really. But if you win the midfield by a significant amount, i'd say it would go your way.

At the moment you're below the promotion line on goal difference. You'll need to win your last two matches and hope that the cutoff is less than 39 points to avoid the qualifer and go up automatically.

His opponents wing attacks are by far his weakest area because one of his wingers is used an extra inner midfielder and the other is being played as an extra central defender.

What's the best way of exploiting that?

Wow! What a change in fortunes my squad is having. No injured players, and in my last three league games I have had a draw and two wins.
I have also moved up to 6th from 7th and am only behind of 5th by goal difference.

I haven't been doing anything different, but with my weekly profits I have purchased a solid/poor coach. That being an improvement on my passable/poor coach I had previously.

Things are going well for the Monteith Jets;)

things still going well with my team, sitting first, got 2 easy beats left for the year to finish with a undefeated season.
