To be promoted from the rookie list to the senior list in 2009? Yes, but it might just be that only one rookie gets a senior spot in 2009. Can both still be on the rookie list next year, or will they be too old?

I reckon it depends on what happens with Shane Birss. I feel sorry for the little battle cos I reckon they've got him in the gun. Otherwise he'd be in the team.
McQualter faces a huge challenge to tag one of the Hawks Saturday night. If he can do that well enough he should get promoted next year.
Attard will surely come off the rookie list next year??

I likes the looks of Eddy. Should keep him.

Yeh, Macca's a good tagger, but he doesn't add much else to the team...Hope he can cement his spot in the side, but he'll battle to hold it with Attard, Baker, Dempster and Steven coming back/in.

For a first year player Eddy has done fine. And even if he is a bit slow next year he will be cut some slack because of his age/experience. ( Four year apprenticeship )?
For a four season player McQualter should be better by now. He will be retained for 2009 IMO but, if he dosn't improve over the pre-season I am pretty sure the likes of Armitage, Eddy and Steven will get game time ahead of him.
Also Jones seems to be able to play a tagging role and his tackles are HARD.

McQualter is not yet well proven, and would not be cut the kind of slack a player like Kosi or DalSanto would if they underperform.

This year he is not the weakest link, 2009 its up to him?

You would think since there both in our starting 22 for the Prelim they would both be promoted.

Good point. I'd be rather surprised if they were not.

Eddy is a shoe-in to get promoted.

Mini can be retained given the rules? :

All clubs can maintain a rookie list of up to six players. Participation at the NAB AFL Rookie Draft is voluntary. A player included on a clubs rookie list cannot play for the club in the AFL except in the Pre-Season competition of if a rookie-listed player is promoted as a long term injury replacement player.

A rookie player must be 18 (and under 23) before December 31 in the year he is drafted. Sydney & Brisbane can include one or more players on their rookie list during the period between the NAB Pre-Season draft and the NAB Rookie Draft provided the player has resided in NSW or the ACT (in the case of Sydney) or Queensland (in the case of Brisbane) for at least three years before his selection. This encourages Sydney & Brisbane to invest in local players who were not selected at either the NAB AFL Draft or the NAB Pre-Season Draft.

A club can retain a maximum of three players on its rookie list for a second season provided it nominates those players at the time of the compulsory list lodgement.

I initially thought this was a thread about doing enough to hold their spot this weekend, lol, was about to say

I would say, they would both come off the R/L, along with attard.
Haretuku/LVR face problems if they can'tn find a way to start getting some game time, esp LVR..

Whilst a little difficult to locate (not unusual for the AFL), I am getting the impression that 2 years is the max for a player on a rookie list. Explains why James Wall got cut last year (had been on Swans rookie list prior to us, and the Saints obviously couldn't justify promotion onto senior list with Goose expected to come back).

Van Rheenan would then be delisted without doubt, as we could not justify a senior spot.

So if Eddy was promoted, and LVR and Chivers delisted, it would mean that the other guys (Mini, Miles & Attard) could be retained (assuming Attard had not been on a rookie list at Brisbane).

Eddy yes for sure.

Mcqualter has had a go at the main list before and didn't take his chance however i believe he has done enough to be rewarded.

Yes to both for mine

has the team been announced?

Eddy has been fantastic this year, keep him. I'd actually dump McQualter all together. Dempster, Jones, Attard, Baker, Birss can all tag and do it better than McQualter. I know it's a harsh call but he's been around for while now and he doesn't really do much apart from possibly shutting down a player. Good taggers have big engines, which Macca doesn't have. Don't think he should play a part next year in front of Steven, Armo, Eddy etc.

I think McQualter is the third best tagger behind Baker and Attard. I think needing a third as we have this year is exceptional and unnecessary too. I'd keep him as a rookie if we can. Promote him whenever Baker or Attard get long term injuries.
