Have we botched the rebuild?

The rebuilt was never that bad. What was bad was the senior players we brought in with shocking attitudes and you wonder why the young players come through with similar ones.

The recruitment of Darling, Parker and Daniel is what we have really needed for the last 3 years. Stars of the game with great qualities on and off the field

Not Aiden Corr, Jared Polec, Griffin Logue etc etc etc
No love for the Axis of Ordinary types Leo? :smirk look

To be serious I disagree with yah brother. It’s more than just who we have recruited from other clubs. It’s the type of players we have recruited / drafted which have left holes on the list. It’s players we have missed out on whilst drafting. It’s the trades we have made. The list balance. We have made a lot of mistakes. A lot. It is why we still sit third last and half a decade has past us by. :stern look

It's almost criminal that we don't have a developing KPF on the list. We recruited two KPD's and appear to be trying to turn one into a forward. We need to find one this draft/trade as Larkey is struggling, perhaps terminally (I hope not but he could be on a downward spiral, he isn't getting younger and he has entrenched bad habits) and Darling is very near the end.

Going tall, we need ready made. Quick glance at 2026 off contract names:

Dan Curtin, Nate Caddy, Kayle Gerryn, Ben King, Jed Walter, Aaron Cadman, Max Gruzewski, Jesse Hogan, Jake Riccardi, Jack Whitlock,Thomas Sims, Jobe Shanahan, JUH

At least there are names. Get to work Brady. 🥴

Some good names there 👍

We had Comben and Edwards, Comben ended up not that flash as a forward but has turned into a pretty good defender. Edwards decided he didn't want to play AFL level football. We then brought in CCJ as a forward/ruck option.

I think with the other options bombing out we took Whitlock, and brought in Darling for the very short-term to help out, it means we wont have to rush Whitlock.

I think we could have taken McDonald or Cadman and their names pop up when they have a rare good game and then disappear into silence for the rest of the season but they aren't super large so what point of difference would they have in our side vs a Zurhaar or a Duursma? Larkey is going to be the go to guy for 5+ years now, was going to be that for even longer when McDonald and Cadman were available.

If ultimately, the players are going to get the vast majority of their marks on the lead, it doesn't matter if you have a Watson or a two meter peter. Someone like Darcy or Walter who have the capacity to take a lot of marks from shit balls dumped into the forward 50 were the kind of players we didn't have access to.

We were as confident of Comben as a player as we were with Xerri, so I can understand they saw other weaknesses in the list as being more of a priority.

I'm not a big fan of inflicting emotional damage on young kids in a public spectacle like that, as funny as it was. I think it is better to embarrass grown adults who behave the same way at the footy.

This.

TBH if that was my child I would be contacting the AFL and the broadcaster to ask why they were delighting in my childs pain.

an adult is an adult but this is punching down.

I'd be off to 'sue, grabbit and run' for advice.

I've never been a fan of homing the broadcast in on random crowd members who aren't trying to attract attention to themselves. I get that we all consent by attending but it's pretty shit. Just show us the game ffs.

That poor kid will be a meme for years to come. Hope he is ok. Opens him wide to bullying etc. Wish it hadn't have happened tbh.
Agree, 100%, GK. I spent my childhood crying at GAA games. I wouldn’t have appreciated photos of me then. The poor kid has to go to school today. Reprehensible, is the only word that comes to hand. The grown man burning his Carlton scarf - now, that’s something worth whacking on the television!

I get your point and lord knows there are some misses there but Larkey, Xerri and Archer are decent late round picks.

I think our trading has been dismal. Adelaide is a decent comparison and some of their best players are traded in, Hinge, Keys, Rankine, Dawson, Neal-Bullen etc.
This is where interstate teams get a little bit of a leg up with the “go home factor”. Anyone wanting to return to Melbourne has a lot of teams they can choose, unless we are winning flags or paying a bundle it’d be hard to pull them away from bigger clubs.

Will be interesting to see if his family comment at all - I'm sure the media will be looking for them to see if there is a story.

A regular caller to SEN phoned in Monday arvo. He spoke mainly about the game and Carlton (his team) but ended by saying:

“before I go, I want to have a crack at the broadcaster for zooming in on the Carlton kid crying late in the game. That’s my cousin’s son. It’s been captured for a laugh at the Carlton tears but he’s a little kid. Once home he and his family saw it on the news and the little bloke’s barely left his room since. He’s not at school today. He couldn’t face the ridicule and he doesn’t want to go outside at all nor attend Auskick next weekend. Cheap laughs yes but at what cost? It’s a bloody disgrace and I am so angry about it. He’s such a sweet kid who just happens to love footy and his team. He didn’t deserve this!”

That was the gist of it anyway.

The need for a cheap laugh these days overrides any notion of thoughtfulness, it seems.

Well at least we can agree that Foxtel botched the broadcast. :stern look
They need to get the child on AFL 360 and offer him a genuine apology and maybe even get Cripps or his favourite player in there as well with some freebies..This needs to be addressed by FOX ....ASAP

IMO they need to be compensating the child for the psychological damage he may or has already suffered. The only thing these organisations understand is money.
