So, Colligwood V Carlton is one. ..

But Essendon Hawthorn was another... but that may have gone to Geelong now... well it probaly went years ago.. .

So who is Essendon nemesis now? (all of them, i know) but exclusively... Richmond is the only one that springs to mind, because it is usually us and them at 9 and 10 early in the season for the last 10+ seasons...

Traditionally i always had ESS V HAW COLL V CARL GEE V MELB (because of location more than anyting)

Maybe now it is ESS V NTH and RICH V MELB ?? and what about stkilda? Dogs?

Who is out new rival now that ours has gone?

Just because you aren't a teams only rival doesn't mean you can't be rivals. There is a lot of hatred between Essendon and Carlton. Nobody disputes this. Collingwood and Carlton have their own rivalry which doesn't impact on our rivalry with Carlton.

For mine with Collingwood its more about mutual respect these days than anything - it seems pretty friendly.

I think Essendon vs Hawthorn and Essendon vs North are the two that are sort of simmering in the background. Just waiting for the right set of circumstances to ignite again.

We haven't lost them. They have lost us

I'd have them second to Carlton on my hated list, which is very high considering that we have spotfires all over the country.

Hawthorn would probably have us second to Geelong as well.
And we have more than one rival. Too many campaigners to focus just on one.

I agree, except for that bit at the end. The Hawthorn rivalry is alive and well (check the non-essendon thread and see if you can find anyone barracking for the Hawks tonight)... and the fact that our worst loss all year was 108 points to Hawthorn? Yeah I try and forget that but that was pretty bitter as well. I think the Collingwood one will arc up when a game is more than just the two clubs... like if it's for ladder position or bragging rights or something.

And Essendon vs. North isn't a rivalry... it's a joke. They hate us, we just forget they exist most of the time.

Plus, I'd say Geelong vs Hawthorn is more of a respectful rivalry based on close games/finals in recent history as opposed to Essendon vs Hawthorn. That's just spiteful, regardless of ladder position. There would probably be a good majority of Hawthorn supporters that would barrack for Geelong over Essendon and would rather lose to Geelong in a cut throat final than Essendon.

Hawthorn's biggest rival is Geelong, but their most spiteful rivalry is Essendon. Sort of like Carlton's biggest rivalry being with Collingwood, but their most spiteful rivalry being with Essendon

There's not much respect from the Geelong types towards Hawthorn.

Yes it's a little more on Geelong's side than Hawthorn's side for sure. But from Hawthorn's perspective, they'd view Geelong more as a respectful rivalry. Just have a look at their reaction after the loss. If they lost to us the way they lost to Geelong, the board would be in meltdown.

I have no idea what your premise is.

We haven't lost our normal rivals as rivals.
Gerard whatley was talking about it after the match last night, that Hawl and Geelong have pretty much taken the Ess V Hawk mantles for rivalry.

So.. when it comes to rivarly round, who does essendon get now? do you see?

I've been finding recently, both on here and in real life, that Melbourne fans have been the the most palatable in regards to Essendon.
I agree, last few years it has been all over the shop... 2013 we should have smashed them.. Then this year we beat them? plus a couple of others..

We did smash them in 2013. To the tune of 148 points.

I meant 2012 when we should have won, then we smashed them 2013, then we lost again in 2014 when we should have won ..., then 2015 we were both pretty average.. Then now we should have lost, but won.... it may not be rivarly, but the underdog in those games seems to have a good chance of getting up.
