Anyone who has seen Hawkins lately care to have a crack at this?

Is he only suited at FF, or could he play CHF if Mooney was rested next week?

Would Hawkins be any chance of stealing the last finals IC spot from Taylor, Byrnes, Varcoe, Prismall, Gamble, assuming that Lonergan keeps his good form going? I suspect selectors may be looking for some size (I'm also assuming that Wocjinski will be fit), depending on what happens tomorrow and who we play in F1 of course.

Interesting that it was 'wet' today but Hawkins was still able to kick 6.

Thanks

I have no idea about your question. But I am loving the fact he is kicking bags in the VFL. Also in the wet, as you pointed out.

Personal opinion would believe that at this current period in time; 2007-2008-2009, Tom Hawkins is best suited to playing from the goalsquare to 60 metres out from goal. Looking at todays game, he looked lost trying to fill in gaps, zoning up, etc. when he drifted upfield.

We have all seen what pre seasons can do for certain players, and maybe Tom will go through a positional change, work on cardio, etc. Don't get me wrong, if his cardio is great, so be it. But, from an armchair expert's POV, he looks like he is labouring.

Today, he outmuscled and outfoxed a 10 year veteran in Jason Saddington quite easily 1-1, which is something that Mooney and Lonergan have appeared to have found difficult when plonked in the goalsquare.

Doubt it.I don't think we've played 3 tall forwards in any other game this year,so I doubt we would now.

I was at the game yesterday and funny enough he played both roles. He was rotated through FF and CHF and was rested often on the bench. I think he played about 75-85% of the match with some decent rests on the bench.

He was simply too big when left at FF to play one on one with Saddington and then when at CHF he seemed to have some decent pace to get clear of the bullants CHB.

Overall it was good to watch him yesterday... happy to have him at Carlton should you want to leave him in the VFL :p;)

i for sure would rest Mooney next week and lets see what Hawkins has to offer, remeber the 2's won't be playing finals so if Hawkins doesnt get in next week its hard seeing him playing any part of finals, i stil don't believe Lonergan is doiong enough with the amout of chances he has presented to him.

what is this love feast with hawkins. he played alrite in his first ten games and thats all. lornegan has been very impressive with what his achieved. his not your hawkins type taking big pack marks, his your mobile chf,ff and he's doing a great job leading to be that link between chf and inside 50.

Agreed ,Lonergan is playing a similar role to how N.Ablett was used 07'

There is only one way for Hawkins to enter the side:

Harry Taylor has to be dropped to make way for the Tomahawk!!

Tom Lonergan played down back last year in the reserves before he kicked a bag of 6 goals in the 2007 Reserves Grand Final!!

Hence, the Tomahawk can play down at Centre Half Forward-Full Forward.

Harry Taylor, Shannon Byrnes and Mark Blake seem to be the weak links in this Geelong side.

Harry Taylor seems to be more suited to a loose man role in defence where he can plug the hole between centre half forward and full forward. He has struggled against top class forwards over the past 2 weeks, and he is only 12 months away from being a top centre half back.

If Harry Taylor is not dropped, I would not mind playing him at Centre Half Back!

Here is my Geelong side at Full Strength:

B: Corey Enright Matthew Scarlett Tom Harley
HB: David Wojinscki Darren Milburn Andrew Mackie
C: Joel Corey James Bartel Joel Selwood
HF: Steve Johnson Cameron Mooney James Kelly
F: Travis Varcoe Tom Hawkins Tom Lonergan
RUCKS: Brad Ottens Cameron Ling Gary Ablett
INTERCHANGE: Mark Blake Brent Prisnall Josh Hunt and Max Rooke

THE GOVERNOR

And, Harry Taylor misses out!!

How many frothies did you have at Lambys during the game ?
There was a chunky bald bloke that kicked a few goals today.I think he might just sneak into the side.Oh yeah,Stokes is still on our list.

I could see them 'resting' Lonergan against WC for Hawkins. Lonergan has been very solid and his contribution is pretty relative to Nablett last year but I would be happy to give the Hawk a bone and see if he's finally developed the ability to take the friggan shot.

Yeah WTF?! Stokes and Chappy definate starters any day!

I reckon give Hawkins a go next week and rest Moons or Tom. Tom needs more game time so maybe Moons. Hawkins needs major game time.

Thanks all. It is pretty clear that 20/22 probably 21/22 'possies' are locked in (including Stokes, Wocjinski, Rooke despite some other opinions). Lonergan is doing a job which will probably see him in F1 but I thought that selectors might want to have another look at Hawkins this week (fitness is a real problem for finals, granted).

See from Bomber's after game comments that Gamble will be in the mix this week, so the last finals position is obviously still up for grabs (Taylor, Prismall, Gamble, Byrnes, Varcoe). No mention so far of Hawkins tho' so it appears that he would only come in if Mooney or Lonergan gets injured.

the governor. you really struggled with your post.

you left stokes and chapman out.

you have put 3 tall forwards in which isnt gunna happen.

you said mark blake is a weak link. one of the best back up rucks in the comp imo, very much improved and is strong as a brick wall.

I think there is a little bias for Tomahawk here. Now I admit, I don't often watch the VFL but all I know is that for the first 10 games that Tomahawk played in the AFL, he looked indecisive and would too easily drift in and out of games. Now from what I read here, he seems to be dominating in the VFL. However, his replacement in the senior side: Lonergan hasn't done much wrong. Sure, he hasn't kicked 3-4 goals against the quality opposition but he has at least provided an opinion and has more often than not kicked bags against the weaker sides, which I unfortunately cannot say the same about Hawkins (except for one game against Melbourne).

Unless I'm much mistaken, since Lonegran has entered the senior side in the Carlton game, Geelong has played its best football. Interestingly, our 10 or so games before that when we had Tomahawk in the side, we were playing mediocre which culminated in the 86-point thomping at the hands of the Pies. Perhaps it was having a more contributive second tall forward in Lonergan has helped us lift our form.

Essientally what I'm saying is, we shouldn't drop Lonegran: he has earnt his spot. Hawkins had more than enough games to earn his spot in the 22 but he didn't make the most use of it. I suggest he prepare for a big pre-season so he can aim to compete against Lonegran and N.Ablett for that second tall spot - I have supreme confidence that in the long run, he can develop into a better player than either.

Problem is, you dont change something that isnt broken. Throwing Hawkins in and Loners out could do a bit more harm then good, purely because of positioning and gameplan. Mooney and Loners have played together for large chunks of the season now, and one thing Loners does have going for him is that he positions himself well.

And people are being far far too harsh on Taylor. He has played on two very good forwards the past couple of weeks and he is still inexperienced. He had a horrible game today, but rhen again so did Scarlett. And Milburn. The lovechild of Langdon and Silvani couldn't have stopped Hale today.

Lonergan has done his job. We needed someone to come in and kick 2-3 every week as the 2nd tall. I can't really fault him. But...

Hawkins at his best is an improvement on Lonergan. He has the ability to take contested marks and has similar abilities leading up.

I think Lonners inclusion has coincided with Mooney coming into some good form, which may be because Lonners spends alot more time outside the forward 50 than the Hawk did, giving Moon some space to work with.

I <3 the big T Bone, but I think Lonners has earnt his spot.

I agree CE that he has done a reasonable job. He is in fact probably the only tall forward that come close to Nathans kicking conversion.
But..
Its become more and more obvious that he struggles to be as creative as Nathan or as strong over head as Mooney or potentially Hawkins. Today , even when Ottens was killing them on the ball , I felt we looked more dangerous when he was forward and Blake was on the ball because we had another player who could taken a contested mark. If he is fit it may be time to give him a run.

Agree mate. In finals football, contested marks become even more important.

hahaha, good call :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

was quite impressed with hawkins form in the 1st qtr on the weekend, outmuscled his opponent and got in good position
it also helped that the delivery was pretty good in the first as opposed to the rest of the game...
good kicking for goal in th first as well, and i makred all 3 of them...
