Guys,

Can anyone tell me what year and round was the game where the bears/lions came from behind at 3 qtr time to beat the hawks.
it's the infamous game where the Hawks players sat in the shade because of the heat.

Cheers.

"Hawthorn led Brisbane by 45 points at three quarter time (13.10 to 5.13) in 1995 at the ‘Gabba. Brisbane kicked 9.7 in the final quarter to win by 7 points."
I WAS THERE :D
Can't remember which round it was though

Good on ya, LIONOFZION for remembering the game that happened nearly 13 years ago. Jesus I can barely remember the game we played last week.

Leading Possessions: Bris: Lambert 29, Hart 27, Voss 24, Fletcher 23, Bews 23. Haw: D Jarman 28, Crawford 22, Hudson 19, Barnard 19 Harford 17.

Brownlow Votes: D Jarman (Haw) 3, M Voss (Bris) 2, S Crawford (Haw) 1.

Have always wanted a copy of this game but when contacted Name a game they decided in their wisdom to stock the game from this round where West Coast Doubled St.Kilda's score at Waverly Park instead.

Had asked them if they will ever get it in, apparently channel 7 have destroyed a copy of this game. It shocked me that such a important game in the development of our club would be treated with such disrespect.

I was there too!!....My god, what a game......it was the day the Bears won me over for good!!......the emotion at the end of the game by all the people, male and female, had to be seen to be believed, grown men had tears rolling down their faces, complete strangers were hugging each other....I have never experienced such emotion at a game before or since.........quite extrordinary!...

I have this copy I got from the club at the time, its so funny. Channel 7 commentators not realising they were on air during the break.Great match, a prized item in our collection.

Sheesh… I’d be on the phone to seven and name a game if it is “lost/destroyed” and getting them to bid for a copy of your “copied for personal use only” version.

I can't blame you for that, given we were playing Sydney and all. :D

Pretty sure I still have a copy of the final quarter somewhere at home. Transferred it to DVD a while back I think (or hope)

It was the Steve Lawrence goal from in front of the old social club which was the highlight of the last quarter for me:thumbsu:

It'd be an interesting legal standpoint, that if no one holds a copy of the original whether they forfeit the copyright or not. Where is our lawyer/laywer-in-training.

I remember the game. To put it in Basketball terms we couldn't hit a 2 pointer in the first three quarters so we basically started bombing the ball from outside 50 and they kept going through.

Lawrence said after that Goal he tried to do it again at training from the social club and couldn't make the distance it was just one of those freak moments that happen.

http://afl.allthestats.com/statistics/rdscores.php?yrfm=1995&rdfm=16

Bris Bears 0.6 2.12 5.13 14.20 (104)
Hawthorn 6.5 8.7 13.10 14.13 (97)
Crowd: 8,209 at the Brisbane Cricket Ground

There was quite a gale blowing that day at the GABBA to the end we kicked in the final quarter. The above shows that only 6 goals were kicked towards the scoreboard end that day, 22 to the school end.

8,209 people attended the game, imagine a crowd like that now.

The other game that sticks in my mind from that season was the demolition of Richmond a few weeks later.

Bris Bears 6.3 13.8 18.11 24.16 (160)
Richmond 4.0 8.2 13.3 13.5 (83)
Crowd: 11,524 at the Brisbane Cricket Ground

The Tigers were 4th on the ladder and the Bears were still outside the 8. The fans were starting to come along as well. It was only a few days after the passing of the great EJ Whitten, and a commentator had hung an old Footscray jumper out of the commentary box on top of the old Cricketers Club with the number 3 on it. A day I will never forget.

Out of interest, the crowd for our Rd 21 game (the first under lights) v Essendon was 12,657 with 11,824 turning up for the Round 22 clash v Melbourne.

Probably the start of the games growth in Queensland. :thumbsu:

I remember that game as well. I copped a lot of crap being a hawks fan and still at school. I was in Year 11 and my English teacher who isn't around anymore (he died from a brain tumor) was a pies fan and he gave it to me. I will give you this though, Peter Knights was coaching us at the time and I think that loss to you guys cost him his job.

Funny you mention Steve Lawrence.....Was in a shop today, standing right next to him, I got quite brave and said hello.....he actually was very pleasant, could have ignored me but didn't....was quite chatty, talked about our Lions and hoped they make the 8...................further to my earlier post re: this game...we were sitting next to a family who were Bears fans from Cairns, and had driven down as their son was playing in the pre match game.....They were really excited to see the Bears for the first time.....anyway crux of story....they were so disillusioned by 3/4 time, they left to start the drive back home......they didn't get to see the great win!!!......I've never forgotten them and how unlucky they were...

Was there sitting behind the goals at the Western Stand End, my brother was a fanatical Hawks supporter/i was still aligned with Hawthorn slightly, we got dressed in all our Hawks gear and sat amongst the Bears supporters, i kept my mouth shut during the whole game and sat feeling guilty and secretly wanting to support the bears but in Hawthorn gear out of loyalty to my brother. He was giving to the the Bears supporters something chronic, when the Hawks with kick a goal he would stand up and start chanting Brisbane ETC. By the end of the final quarter we had been doused in so much beer, chip cups and chips. I swore never to barrack against the Bears again and from that day forward the Hawks have been my second team.

How the hell dd you know to start this thread this week????????:thumbsu:

Nice effort though.

All the talk of the comeback and then this;)

Amazing the timing of this thread, perhaps its an Ace up our sleeve to be used in Emergencies;)

Like Hawthorn going in the Shade in 1995, did anyone notice Roden put the jacket around Cornes at three quarter time because it was cold and wet. Just interesting that in both these games something happened at three quarter time where the opposition were trying to get out of the weather.

Port in a storm!

Was there sitting behind the goals at the Western Stand End,

Hey, that's where I was (roughly)....except lower down near the left hand point post.

The memories from that game are still vivid.

I"m pretty sure I've still got a copy on videotape somewhere.

The Bears were down by 45 at the last change and from memory, virtually nothing happened (scorewise) until at least 8 minutes into the last quarter.

Then, as if inspired,our fellas were running,kicking, marking and bombing goals from everywhere....bit like last night's game....7 goals down, 5 down, 4, 3, 2 ,1...... hey, wait a second................we're a silly chance here!

In front!!! OMG!!!...it can't be.

We win!

More than any other game, that effort last night reminded me of that remarkable Round 16 game back in 1995.

Someone said, or wrote back then that, that was the day the Brisbane (Bears) became a real footy club.

To marshal enough will, pride, sheer guts and determination in an away game, like we did last night to overcome all the odds, is I submit, a very good sign that this Brisbane side of 2008 is going to write some very special history of its own
