It’s not really a traditional “membership” sport. After more than a decade as a Hawks member, I joined my NRL club a few years ago to help out financially. The membership department seemed to be some guy doing it on top of his regular job. They’ve really only started advertising and pushing packages in recent years, probably once they realised how much cash it brings in for the AFL clubs.

AFL is miles ahead on this front and the NRL won’t catch up, but the comparison is pointless. The fans are just as passionate about their clubs as AFL fans are.

Disagree. Far more part time and casual fans in the NRL space. I’ve lived in Brisbane (the most parochial NRL city) and Melbourne and I can say without doubt that AFL fans are far more passionate on the whole than NRL fans are.

Raiders members aren’t members. I’ve told the club repeatedly that it needs to be renamed to ‘season ticket holder’ because membership implies that you have some say in how the club is run. As it stands the Raiders is a closed shop and we are at the mercy of the insipid management that has zero interest in winning a premiership.

/rant :(
Stop funding them then

Stop funding them then

I’m a proud non-member. I have told the club (not that they would care - but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) that until it’s a true membership then I won’t be investing in it.

Well if you're not putting any money in stop complaining about how they run the club :)

I believe Adelaide are up around 72 000. Read that somewhere today.

Would also like someone from the AFL to look at Carltons membership total and tell me how on Earth they are still part of the 'big 4', and how their Friday night coverage can possibly be justified.
The big 4 is an imaginary secret club, with an imaginary board room, where they have imaginary discussions about their imaginary superiority.

It doesn’t mean anything.

Herald-Sun has the Tigers at 90,023.
Hawks 74,201
Scum 69,818
Pies 65,000 ish which could be as low as 64,500

About 65,000 of the Tiger members have stayed away from the game today.

Maybe more ...

Hats off to Sydney, but North and Melbourne are an absolute train wreck.

77,607 today, have further smashed our record, seriously looking for 80,000 by the cut off.

12 + years of growth, no spikes, no flash in the pan, just a giant of the AFL who actually also win multiple contemporary premierships. Time to reset the top four, Hawthorn: IN, Carlton; OUT.

Membership update as mentioned above an amazing result of 77,607 an astounding 5,055 members up on same time as last year.

The Hawthorn supporters certainly have jumped aboard this season to make it 12 consecutive record breaking membership totals.

There is real enthusiasm and believe of a successful season ahead.

Looks like Jeff might be right when he said the club is aiming for 80K. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Interesting that our average attendance record is still 2008.
It will go up the next two weeks as we have a couple of big MCG games coming up

It's only 11 in a row 2008-2018

If you care to read Hawthorn Annual Report for 2017 season
Membership and Merchandise Hawthorn Football Club has broken its all-time membership record for the 11th consecutive year, surpassing the 75,000 mark for the second time in the Clubs history. This season’s final membership tally finished at 75,663 (2016: 75,351) and includes 78.4% of members on the annual roll-over payment plan HawksDirect (ranked #1 in the AFL industry). The Club placed second on the AFL membership ladder behind Collingwood. Hawthorn’s Tasmanian membership base broke the 9,500 barrier for the first time, with 9,550 members joining in 2017.

So 12 it is.

Premiership afterglow. Let's see how they go the year after they don't win one.

I think they'll be a perennially high-membership club - the MCG is parked smack-bang in Richmond; an affluent and populous suburb now. The area practically beckons members with the amount of residential properties, eateries, places of work, bars/clubs etc. They're in prime position.

They have a catchy AF club song as well.
