Re: Haydn Kiel

I can tell you right now this guy will be a superstar!!
Ive worked with him personally at Southport and hes a gun, hes only a slight frame and med size, but is super quick, great skills, can read the play well and kick goals as a small forward.

Re: Haydn Kiel

I use to play with Daniel Dzufer when he played for Caloundra. I caught up with him on the weekend. I was talking about what it is like with the Lions and whatnot. The convo eventually moved on to who his roommate is, and he is rooming with Kiel. He said Kiel is an absolute gun.

Great foot skills and a real good football brain. Looks to be a great pickup for the Lions.

Thanks for the inside word Corrosion. Did Danny say he is enjoying his time at the club so far?

Re: Haydn Kiel

First glimpse I've caught of Hadyn for a while at the intraclub and was impressed with his work around the packs, although he was mostly playing as a small forward. He's certainly got the physique for senior football. Appears destined for a NAB cup berth based on his intraclub performance.

Damn straight ;)

Speaking of which, from Friday's Gold Coast Bulletin

Young Lion is ready to roar
Nick Smart
GOLD Coast youngster Haydn Kiel has already raised a few eyebrows during his short time at the Brisbane Lions den, and he will be out to make a big impression when he plays in tonight's intra-club match.
After what has been a long and torturous summer of training, fans will get their first real look at the Lions of 2007.
For Kiel, taken by the Lions on the club's rookie list in December, the game is an opportunity to make a big impression on the coaching staff.
He said he is looking forward to strutting his stuff in Lions colours for the first time.
``It will be good to try and make an impression on everyone,'' said the 18-year-old.
``It is the first time we have had a sort of actual game, so it will be good to have a hit-out with the boys.
``I have been playing most of the little games we have been doing at training as a kind of small forward, so maybe I might line up there.''
The speedy winger has been training hard and has impressed many at the club already with his commitment and work ethic.
While injury hasn't been too far away for the Lions recently, Kiel said he is fighting fit.
``I feel good actually, most of the first year boys have all got niggling groins but I have been pretty sweet,'' he said.
The two-time Southport Sharks premiership player said it has been a big step up from AFLQ to the big league.
``We have had a full month of really hard stuff and then we went to Community Camp where it kind of calmed down down a little bit,'' said Kiel.
The intra-club match, to be played at Giffin Park (Coorparoo), gets under way at 6pm.

Where is the application form. I am in.

If Nick's the president, then looks like I'm the secretary. This one's got tonnes of seats. All aboard!

Re: Haydn Kiel

Had some good touches in the opening NAB cup game, winning some admirers from the Channel 7 commentary box.

Unfortunately he tweaked a hammy by the looks of thing, so should be out for a few weeks. That'll learn him from making comments like this:

Re: Haydn Kiel

Out with another hammy injury:

Haydn Kiel (Hamstring) - 3-5 weeks.
Strained his hamstring in the Suncoast Lions' loss to Broadbeach in round 3 of the AFLQ season.

Re: Haydn Kiel

End of Season Player Review

Unlucky not to be selected in the national draft, Kiel slipped to the rookie list probably because of his (lack of) size. He was playing some good footy at the start of the year and was considered a good chance to be elevated to the senior list if an opportunity arose. However recurring hamstring injuries frustrated him throughout the year and his season never really gained any momentum.

Is this man the new Voss?
Article from:
Andrew Hamilton
February 21, 2008 11:00pm

THE man who guided Michael Voss through the first steps of what became one of Australian football's greatest careers says the Lions may have unearthed the premiership skipper's clone in rookie Haydn Kiel.
Queensland coaching great Norm Dare was the Bears mentor when Voss, a 16-year-old scholarship holder, first started making the trip down to Carrara to train with the fledgling AFL club. Years later he was the coach of a Southport premiership side that featured a teenaged Kiel. The similarities between the champion Brisbane premiership skipper and the young Gold Coast goal sneak struck Dare immediately.
But where Voss couldn't wait to get into the action, Dare said Kiel took some convincing to leave his school-aged mates behind.
"He was very similar in stature to Michael Voss at the same age. They were instinctive footballers and every time you saw them they had a footy in their hands," he said.
"He (Kiel) always wanted to double up. We had our work cut out trying to stop him heading back to train with his under-18s mates.
"I remember Vossie was the same, always running water or messages for other teams after he'd played too.
"As a youngster he had the same passion as Voss but not the same maturity, but once we convinced him to step up to the seniors there was no stopping him. And they shared another trait – the up-tempo training never bothered him.
"I've always thought he could be a really good AFL player."
Kiel played in senior Southport premierships sides in 2005 and '06, and even when he first stepped up just weeks into his 17th year, he was a stand-out.
"I rated him very highly," Dare said. "You could see straight away he could play. You could just tell he was a one-touch player with an ability to influence games."
Dare said the Lions might have pulled off a drafting coup securing Kiel as a rookie in the 2006 draft when he had been overlooked by other clubs.
"Brisbane read the draft very well. They knew they could get him as a rookie because other clubs were going to overlook him. It was a really smart piece of work," he said.
Kiel played the first game of last season's NAB Cup and had an immediate impact, kicking the first goal of the game.
But he finished on the sidelines with a torn hamstring, setting the scene for a frustrating first year. Another hamstring injury just into his comeback and then a badly dislocated shoulder, which required a reconstruction, ensured he had no chance to press for a senior spot when injury struck other players.
This season started better. Last week against Essendon he booted two goals and took a strong mark overhead – showing no effects from his shoulder reconstruction.
Tonight he has another chance to impress against the Kangaroos, but the reality for a rookie is he cannot play AFL regular season games unless he is on the senior list.
"It is tough, being on the rookie list . . ," Kiel said.
"But there is always going to be an opening and that is what drives you, to make sure that when an opportunity arises you're able to take it.
"I definitely feel I'm ready for senior footy."
Norm Dare agrees.

Re: Haydn Kiel

If Norm pumps him up any more I fear he might explode before he even makes it onto the Senior List
Lots to like about him though - if Beau hadn't retired methinks Kiel would've been upgraded for sure.

Re: Haydn Kiel

Comparisons with champions are almost the last thing you need as a youngster trying to get a game.

However in this case, the irony might be that Vossy was so good, that no-one is honestly going to peg the kid as the next Voss. In some ways I think that might be better than getting 'the next Akermanis' or 'next Lappin' tag.

Re: Haydn Kiel

For first round picks I wouldn't like to see these comparisons because they have enough expectation on them as it is. For a rookie though it's not necessarily a bad thing because the odds are stacked against them and it lets them know they are being noticed. Plus, as xplo said, no one is going to take it that seriously.
