I use to play with Daniel Dzufer when he played for Caloundra. I caught up with him on the weekend. I was talking about what it is like with the Lions and whatnot. The convo eventually moved on to who his roommate is, and he is rooming with Kiel. He said Kiel is an absolute gun.
Great foot skills and a real good football brain. Looks to be a great pickup for the Lions.

Is this man the new Voss?

THE man who guided Michael Voss through the first steps of what became one of Australian football's greatest careers says the Lions may have unearthed the premiership skipper's clone in rookie Haydn Kiel.
Queensland coaching great Norm Dare was the Bears mentor when Voss, a 16-year-old scholarship holder, first started making the trip down to Carrara to train with the fledgling AFL club. Years later he was the coach of a Southport premiership side that featured a teenaged Kiel. The similarities between the champion Brisbane premiership skipper and the young Gold Coast goal sneak struck Dare immediately.
But where Voss couldn't wait to get into the action, Dare said Kiel took some convincing to leave his school-aged mates behind.
"He was very similar in stature to Michael Voss at the same age. They were instinctive footballers and every time you saw them they had a footy in their hands," he said.
"He (Kiel) always wanted to double up. We had our work cut out trying to stop him heading back to train with his under-18s mates.
"I remember Vossie was the same, always running water or messages for other teams after he'd played too.
"As a youngster he had the same passion as Voss but not the same maturity, but once we convinced him to step up to the seniors there was no stopping him. And they shared another trait – the up-tempo training never bothered him.
"I've always thought he could be a really good AFL player."
Kiel played in senior Southport premierships sides in 2005 and '06, and even when he first stepped up just weeks into his 17th year, he was a stand-out.
"I rated him very highly," Dare said. "You could see straight away he could play. You could just tell he was a one-touch player with an ability to influence games."
Dare said the Lions might have pulled off a drafting coup securing Kiel as a rookie in the 2006 draft when he had been overlooked by other clubs.
"Brisbane read the draft very well. They knew they could get him as a rookie because other clubs were going to overlook him. It was a really smart piece of work," he said.
Kiel played the first game of last season's NAB Cup and had an immediate impact, kicking the first goal of the game.
But he finished on the sidelines with a torn hamstring, setting the scene for a frustrating first year. Another hamstring injury just into his comeback and then a badly dislocated shoulder, which required a reconstruction, ensured he had no chance to press for a senior spot when injury struck other players.
This season started better. Last week against Essendon he booted two goals and took a strong mark overhead – showing no effects from his shoulder reconstruction.
Tonight he has another chance to impress against the Kangaroos, but the reality for a rookie is he cannot play AFL regular season games unless he is on the senior list.
"It is tough, being on the rookie list . . ," Kiel said.
"But there is always going to be an opening and that is what drives you, to make sure that when an opportunity arises you're able to take it.
"I definitely feel I'm ready for senior footy."
Norm Dare agrees.
