why is the girl on the right of the middle guy so weird in one of the pics and normal in the other?
Yeh she has had her face photoshopped and replaced with someone else in the close up picture, really really weird

definetly photoshopped but its also a different picture to the first one. everyone else is smiling differently and there is no sign in the background on one of the pics.

What exactly doesn't add up?

Pretty common the theory that Maggie and the fked up daughter are involved somehow.
Well for starters finding out your partner is cheating and wearing dark makeup/going through a tween emo phase are not good enough reasons for people to become psycho serial killers.

And you would also have to ignore basically everything we have learnt in the first 5 eps.

Maggie might be loosely involved because she went to the school but the show is too good for some sort of cheap M.Night Shyamalan twist.

yeah i don't get why it is photoshopped though, is it a mistake or a clue, i can't tell but this show is so well put together and i can't think of any other mistake that this must be deliberate

so what is the meaning then arggghhh

i tell you what, whenever you listen to the 'haters' they will always talk about how its the same old story and this has all been done before, (I'm looking at you grantland). but the love, time and attention to detail put into this shows its much more, the way it challenges further scrutiny and hides analytical clues for fans to find is breaking bad-like.

I leaning towards Hart being heavily involved. In the last ep he and Ledoux never make eye contact and when he starts to cuff him Ledoux says "it's starting" - Rust thinks he is talking to him and tells him to shut up. I now think he is talking to Hart.

Add to that how weird his kids act - doll orgy, picture and now his older daughter with two blokes.

I like the 10 point deer. Ending up on the dead girl.

He also did not want Rust anywhere near the lawn mower man. Did not go with Rust to talk to him - and I agree with many that he will be involved.

He also led Rust to find the stick thing at the disable kids house.

He went by himself to the rave to get the info Ledoux is cooking for the bikies. I think this was rubbish and he already knew - this part never happened or he just went through the motions.

Convenient that Rust is linked to this exact bikie gang.

I could be miles off but Hart is a player in this.
Mmmmm so some kind of weird cult or child abuse thing involving the wealthy and powerful. Perhaps those drug cook guys were involved in child trafficking. So kids stolen and sold for adoption or sexual slavery or something else.

Maybe "it's starting" refers to children who were previously abused now being grown up and hunted down. Which would explain the large gap in between killings.

Interestingly though, when Hart says one of his biggest sins was inattention, maybe he is referring to his wife or her family involving the girls in something, or them becoming involved inadvertently (abuse at school or church) and he not recognising it until it was too late. Which would fit neatly with the idea of the detectives curse, since the answer was right under his nose.

I don't think this is necessarily the answer, because it seems a little too far out, but there is definitely something going on with child abuse/abduction and then the later killings.

Maybe is is a psuedo religious thing, or perhaps wealthy and powerful child abusers/gentlemans club and one of them has gone way off the deep end. So, they are tied to the situation, in that they may know the killer and why or how he is targeting the girls but aren't necessarily involved in the killings or cult/religious stuff themselves.

Er.... last theory, maybe the killer was at one stage one of the abused and is now in his eyes saving other victims, who have become sex workers etc. by killing them off.

This is why this show is brilliant - as it stands it can go in any direction. I hope this high standard continues. This is a brilliant show.

That is probably one of the tactics. The audience has been bombarded with so much information and so many possible clues. With its focus on both dualism and realism it'll be interesting to see how these 'clues' pan out.

Amazingly high quality show ... been hooked from Episode 1 and it's just getting better. Dare I say, Breaking Bad in it's quality. Strange thing is, no matter how many times I've mentioned True Detective in conversation over the last month, not a single person I know has yet experienced the show - great to have this thread to read posts by similar minds.

It's miles better than Breaking Bad was at the start. BB took at least 2 seasons to really kick into gear.

I definitely disagree with that. I was hooked on BB after the first episode
And most were. I wasn't at all hooked, but I found the story intriguing and wanted to know where it would go. That is the sign of good writing, but other elements didn't fully find their way until season 3.

Objectively, TD is operating on a very high level in all areas, and was right from the first five minutes.
