Didn't mind this season too much.

The directing and cinematography was really bad at times, and it showed that they were alternating directors.

I found it hard to put together some parts, but overall it made enough sense.

I have to ask, what exactly were the "bad guys" guilty of?

I know that they were corrupt and eventually they started killing people to cover up, but what was their biggest crime throughout?

In season one you had a cult that r*ped and murdered women and children, and had members of the church and government in their ranks.

Season two had goverment officials bribing and interfering with projects, taking drugs and having sex parties with consenting adults (as much as I find that whole scene repulsive).

Is that it?
It was confusing, I watched the lot it was OK, just not comparable to the first season.
Where as Fargo just gets better, for the first time I watched the 1987 movie Fargo also by the Coens, these people are genius you never know what to expect, the first and second series are just brilliant.

I think Fargo and well everything the Coens are involved in, is such top quality , its up there with Deadwood, Sopranos,Rome, Borgias, The Henry the 8th , Homeland and Blacklist, it goes on.
And if you like quality shows and absolute dynamite acting, have a look at the geriatric ward in "Getting on" the ward nurses the big head male nurse and, well, that doctor she is a gem , what acting!!!
When you watch these productions of good shows , well, where ever they are made, if the quality is up there alongside them, then you are eventually amazed at the way you look back at older times in the movie industry or TV , you see the brilliance of former movie stars and also the absolute non talent of some as well , who became movie stars none the less!

As for modern shows if they are not up there well they don't get watched.

My theory on these HBO quality shows is the do 8 to 12 episodes a year or 18 months, and the direction is tight and they get time to make the quality.

Its not like so many episodes made a week assembly line style, for lets face, it crappy soapies.

But in Australia some of the ABC's pick ups have been as brilliant , like Rake, Off Spring, Tangle, Time of our lives, Off Spring is on Ten though I think.

The ABC grabs on occasion the best there is and then the FTA's pick them up or foxtel.

Acting , becoming someone else, is a skill very very few do exceptionally and brilliantly at.

So don't miss the good ones. If you have missed up to now?

GO AND GET THEM FROM A SHOP AND DO SOME SUPER LONG TERM "EP ON EP" WATCHING!!!

As a basis of comparison from season 1, anything would've been sub-par. It was such an amazing piece of work it would've been impossible to follow up with something as good.

I still enjoyed season 2 however.

Season 1 was outstanding. Season 2 I saw the first episode then had hard drive troubles  By the time I got it fixed everyone was shitting on it so I didn't continue.

Agree that season 1 was untouchable, but thats kinda the point - so much goodwill attached to the True Detective name, if s2 was anywhere near passable they would have gone again with a 3rd season surely.

I blame Vince Vaughn.

I don't think the second series was awful. It was still reasonably good tv, albeit not a patch on the first series.

I thought it was McAdam's and Farrell's best work.

Vaughn sucked big time.

And I found the ending a bit shite.

Better than the bulk of the crap on TV but not a patch on S1.

Season One just blew everyone away to the extent that they were never going to be able match that again, not unless MM and Woody returned anyway. People had turned on this show in massive numbers when S1 ended because it didn't match up with their own expectations, kind of like we're seeing from some in the GoT thread now.

I'd recommend going through it all again and binge watching it if you've got some time to kill. It doesn't have that engaging mystery that S1 had but I thought the overall story was handled better in S2 tbh.

Season 2 was nowhere near as bad as people said. It was just really complicated and suffered from the lack of Fukunaga in the directors chair.

It was still a compelling story, even if it was overwhelmingly bleak.

Its not canceled. its still on indefinite hold while Nic Pizzolatto is working on other stuff for his HBO output deal. It could be like Curb and comeback in a few years when he has time, and hopefully then he can patch things up with Cary and get the crew back together the direction was also a huge step back in season 2

^^This. There's currently no really brilliant (season 1) idea for the show, but the anthology format means it can come back whenever....or not. It's future is still as open-ended as it has always been.

Season 2 was still good, better than 90% of tv. The level of whinging wasn't comparable to the quality.

Wish I felt that way but S2 was a bad bad joke. Unlike S1, the story wasn't that interesting, dialogue was often comedic & Vaughn was simply awful for most of it (not entirely his fault as he should never have been let anywhere near such a project) & given his character was central to well basically everything, it all suffered as a result, well it did for me. I stuck with it to the bitter end, but that was done under protest.

No Woody & Matt? No TD....

Jesus. Who would have thought that would happen after the 1st season. They really sh1t the bed with s2.
The article linked was about the cancellation of Vinyl, don't know if the poster unintentionally replied in the wrong thread or something. As far as I know True Detective's fate is still up in the air.

Read a bit further down the article.

Funnily enough I've been rewatching season 1 the last couple nights.

Incredible television. Season 2 was never gonna live up to it though it was okay in itself. I think TD season 1 will be my favourite season of anything for some time.
