HEADANALYSIS: WHAT'S A MATCH THREAD POST WORTH?

Hi everybody. Headless here - the Sweet FA's most-loved community leader and absolute icon of Sweet. You probably should have noted that already. Here are some ways you might have realised it was me, rendering my opening "Hi everybody" completely redundant:
  • My username "Headless" being attached to the post
  • My iconic avatar being attached to the post
  • If you get notifications for new threads on the Sweet FA board, the notification "Headless started a thread called HeadAnalysis: What's a match thread post worth?
Well actually, it might not have been completely redundant. Even if you knew it was me, you might have felt more welcomed in this wonderful thread as a result. There are actually many possible functions and effects.

But I digress.

In my view, there are three pillars of the Sweet FA. I'll refer to them as "the three pillars of the Sweet FA".

First, match thread posting.

Second, media.

And third, general contribution to the league - stats, general presence, picking controversial All-Sweet FA teams. That sort of thing.

"BUT HOW DO THEY INTERRELATE?!"

Please calm down.

In this thread, I will consider the specific relationship between match thread posting quantity and beez ranking. But first, some frequently asked questions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I don't get it. So far this thread has just been a complete waste of time - what are you actually doing?

Wow. What a wonderfully silly question. I hope you feel so silly.

I'm basically taking total match thread posts from across the season (thank you, WaynesWorld19), and dividing that figure by total beez votes for all posters who recorded at least one beez vote (thank you, Ant Bear). It's a terrific piece of analysis, and I have absolutely no doubt you're going to love it.

Like, really love it.

Like, really love it.

Not that much.

Are the results interesting?
Nah.

Are you saying that those who achieve high beez rankings from relatively low match thread contributions are some sort of SuperPosters?
No, you absolute dolt. I don't think posters who achieve a high beez ranking from relatively low match thread contribution are inherently any better or worse than those who don't. I just find it sort of interesting to look at from where posters might have accumulated their votes.

Is that really such a crime?!

Are you saying people should simply ~~~post more~~~?
No. In fact, I think match threads are too long. I CAN'T STAND the waffle, and I simply get SO ANGRY reading some match threads. I can't even begin to describe how angry I get. You'd be amazed. It's quite angry.

Did you give JT_the_Man 100% of his total beez votes?
Yes.

SEASON 27 ANALYSIS (THAT'S NOT THIS SEASON, SILLY)
I actually did a similar (read: the same) thing a couple of seasons ago, after Season 27. You can find that thread here:

In Season 27, a total of 15 posters (from a total of 94 who polled) achieved more more beez votes than they had match thread posts. You can see the full Season 27 table here if interested. Here are the top five from Season 27:

Rankingbeez PlacingPosterVotes/Post
127Cloud_4.686567164
260Fizzler2.538461538
31The Jesus2.091059603
423BRAB1.974093264
55TheInjuryFactory1.918981481

So two seasons ago, there was a clear stand-out: Kennedy Parker, who was also administrator (as Cloud_) at the time. Was this surprising? No, not really. Kennedy Parker these days is typically not a massive match thread contributor these days, with a heavier emphasis than most on media. Also in the top five were two very familiar names from this season: The Jesus and TheInjuryFactory - both media juggernauts.

SEASON 29 ANALYSIS (THAT'S THIS SEASON, SILLY)
Season 29 was, in my opinion, a great season. Excellent media, controversy, strong match threads, and an all-time classic grand final. But what can we take from this simply wonderful HeadAnalysis, er, analysis?

Well, the first thing noting is that only five posters finished with more beez votes than match thread posts. I'll note here again that I don't necessarily think this is inherently a good thing (nor do I think it's inherently a bad thing). Five posters in Season 29 (4.7% of all posters who received at least one beez vote - Season 27 saw 16%). Perhaps this is partially a result of denser match threads with more posts in general?

The five aforementioned posters from Season 29 were Kennedy Parker, brahj, Ant Bear, TheInjuryFactory, and The Jesus. manangatang had the next highest ratio, at 0.96 votes per match thread post, before a big jump to Tigerturbulance at 0.84.

So what makes this group of posters interesting?

I'll put manangatang and Turbo to one side for a moment, acknowledging that they are both extremely strong media contributors. Let's look at the first five in more detail.

Kennedy Parker
Season 27: 4.7 votes per post (1st), beez rank: 27th
Season 29: 3.2 votes per post (1st), beez rank: 3rd

For the second time, and like two seasons prior, Kennedy Parker is a stand-out on this list in Season 29. This season, KP has been highly visible across the league. Kennedy Parker's previous position as admin has, in my view, provided clout, providing another element to threads like "KP RUINS" and his administrative review of Ant Bear's Season 29. I think KP holds some lingering authority.

So even with, perhaps, less involvement in match threads than other posters, KP must be known almost universally in Sweet. KP is at times combative, but rarely (IMO) in an offensive or over-the-top way - often at least partially facetiously.

brahj
Season 27: 1.0 vote per post (15th), beez rank: 53rd
Season 29: 1.9 votes per post (2nd), beez rank: 19th

I think #scandal plays a big part here. brahj IMO could post even less in match threads and still be one of the league's most popular posters. With a reputation forged over many seasons as one of the league's best posters, brahj doesn't need to post heavily in match threads to be known.

For context, brahj (244 posts) posted the least in match threads out of any poster in the top 50 of the beez (Noobz0r with 261, Ant Bear with 271).

Ant Bear
Season 27: 0.6 votes per post (28th), beez rank: 13th
Season 29: 1.8 votes per post (3rd), beez rank: 17th

Ant Bear hasn't been particularly strong on the media side of things this season, but typically polls well in the beez and has been one of the best posters of the past ten seasons. The Sweet FA clearly values Ant Bear's general posting contribution to the league with a 17th place finish this season.

Interestingly, Ant Bear's votes: post ratio seems to have shifted this season. In fact, his ratio is around three times higher this season than in Season 27. This could be at least partially explained by the admin title, with visibility an obvious factor with beez voters (see also Kennedy Parker in Season 27).

TheInjuryFactory
Season 27: 1.9 votes per post (5th), beez rank: 5th
Season 29: 1.4 votes per post (4th), beez rank: 1st

A model of consistency, TIF recorded high beez finishes, and also high votes: post ratios, in both Season 27 and Season 29. TheInjuryFactory is a strong match thread poster (almost 1,000 posts in match threads across the season - 38th out of 107 posters who achieved at least one vote), but I think it's media where TIF really shines.

In addition to captaincy, it's not a huge surprise to me that TheInjuryFactory features across both seasons and across both metrics.

The Jesus
Season 27: 2.1 votes per post (3rd), beez rank: 1st
Season 29: 1.1 votes per post (5th), beez rank 6th

Similarly, The Jesus is not a big surprise. This season specifically, The Jesus started with a bang with The Evolution of a Poster, before being one of the main players in expansion discussions later in the season.

The Jesus has been very consistent in match thread posters, but is also the type who can penetrate a match thread with just one or two posts if needed. Somebody who stays in mind easily.

Was this analysis completely pointless? Yes.

Is there much to take out of it? Probably not.

Should you post in this thread right now to make this thread go bloody viral? BIG TIME.

You can see how unusual Kennedy Parker's result in Season 29 of ~3.2 beez votes per match thread post is in the image above. brahj and Ant Bear are the posters in that 1.75 - 2.10 range.

Look, cats! I made a thread! It's completely pointless!
That doesn’t answer my question.

But, yes I noticed. I love that you were my favourite poster in the league when you were barely active, and then something happened a few seasons ago... and bamn, here we are. Still my favourite poster, and the best thread starter going around.

The posters who managed between 400-700 match thread posts while maintaining a beez::MTP ratio above .40 are the most attractive and alluring posters in the Sweet FA, imo.

Might need to widen those margins a little I think
