I love Headland at full forward running out of the square. He is a great mark on the lead and a good kick at goal. He has been great in his two games up there this year. We have other guys who can do what he has been doing for the last few years out on the wing now, pumping it inside 50 (Hill, Ibbotson). He will only be on the decline being used in the middle of the ground from now on. Could finish of his career nicely with a few bags (especially at Subi) and it's not like we have any other options..........

Hopefully he can do us all a favour and retire at the end of the year.

Had enough of his shit.

Prime responsibility for our total ineptitude in the first quarter.

Down hill skier of the highest order.

Nowhere near it.

I was at the game and he was actually our most dangerous forward. He was providing some sort of target and his ability to drive the ball long was a constant threat.

His injuries are a real worry and I'm on record as saying he should have come back through the WAFL but he did ok today and will be better for the run.

Whether he continues after this year? I think he's got until the end of the season to prove his worth.

Geez chops still a bit upset after the loss are we. What do you suggest, bring Murphy back in and stick him in the square??

Hasn't lived up to his rep or the money he's been paid. Agree.

I thought he was good on a what was a bad day for us. If Tarrant can go down back why not Dessie at FF?

Dessie looked dangerous around goals today and we aren't exactly flushed with dangerous forwards at the moment. In fact I can't remember our forward line looking so impotent for years.

I certainly hope Des doesn't retire. He might not have lived up to his Brissie hype but some of the stick he cops around here is way over the top imo.

Yeah, I copped a lot from some Collingwood friends who usually are not the type to do that. Was like a derby loss for me. Well... the manner in which we lost made it so...

Don't know why Campbell was dropped to be honest.

Yesterday, it was more to do with setting an example... or lack thereof. When we needed a vet to steady the team... he actually became the primary clanger maker. If he is going to play like that when he needs to be stepping up... why the hell are we even persisting with him?

If he can't play like a veteran, make calm decisions, why not just play a kid and get spanked anyway?

He made some seriously shocking blunders up the ground in the first quarter that cascaded the problem IMO. Seriously bad.

This is the problem, and this is what is the weight behind my attacks.

At the end of next year, we are going to have a serious serious retirement problem. And that simply cannot be allowed to happen going into the first shit canned draft. If we look at it:

Grover (finished, but I doubt will be gone this year unfortunately)
Tarrant (has said he will stop after next year)
Soloman (has next year tops you would imagine)
Roger Hayden (his body is falling apart)
Haselby (how long does he have left?)
McPharlin (I'm of the opinion he will retire sooner than we expect given his outside interests, and his inside disinterests)

And this is BEFORE we deal with the contracts of Murphy and Thornton, or potentially some draftees that are busts. So if none of these are retired off, we could potentially be looking 8-10 spots on the list needing replacing, and as few as 5-6 in the most optimistic case (if we do not retire anyone this season).

THAT IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM for mine. And it is why I am so scathing of Des at this particular time. If his body is iffy, and the value on the field in terms of hard bodied, cool head stuff is low, then he should well and truly be in the gun. He is certainly in the gun for mine because of it, and needs to be under more scrutiny because of it.

Cheers.

Can't agree with you on this one chops. and I don't understand why you want to push Headland out the door when we have all the other retirements coming up.

Perhaps he should of come back through the WAFL, but he got through the game so let's just accept that. His disposal in parts yesterday was ordinary and but he also kicked three goals so I'll let that cancel itself out. I'm sure another game or two will see his disposal come back to it's normal level, which is generally pretty decent.

When Dodd was poleaxed I think it was Dessie who rallied the boys. He is also one of the best tacklers at the club which he demonstrated a couple of times yesterday (with both his tackles  ) so he is showing leadership in areas.

He is never going to be the silky, outside, running line-breaker he was recruited as, but as a full forward he can add a lot of value to the team. He is a good grab and a good kick for goal. He can also kick them on the run from outside fifty. And being parked down forward for a couple of years, until Pav takes up that role in his declining years, for mine is a good idea. May prolong his career and could be worth 50 goals a year to us.

Headland showed more in a couple of games than McPharlin has all year. People are too scathing of Des around here and too apologetic for McPharlin. Anyone care to tell me when Luke would have featured in the votes or even in our best players this year?

It would be interesting to see how he's going in our BigFooty POTY... I doubt he'd be in the top 22 in our B & F this year. For a senior player and leader with his talent, 2009 has been a real annus horribilis.

Simple.

Because we have so many coming up in compromised drafts as it is.

There is so much rubbish left on the list at the moment we need to keep as many senior players around as possible.

I could find 6-7 spots for youngsters without any retirements. More than that is just reaching into a shallow draft.

So what are we going to do when we need to take that many in next year's draft?

I agree to an extent that Headland has been a big disappointment overall, and he made some ridiculous blunders yesterday (throwing the ball away, a shot on goal that went WAY out on the full)

BUT...

If Pav is injured we DESPERATELY need Headland in the team leading out from FF. Who else are we going to kick it to???? I'd send McPharlin and Tarrant down back and try to play Des out of the square. Murphy and Campbell are crabs and will never take a grab down there...ditto Kepler.

We are going to get caned by Carlton I'm afraid. :o

Well we wont need to take that many in next years draft. All the players you mentioned won't all retire in the same year.

A couple more clever rookie elevations and we could easily move through the retirements without needing to plug gaps on the list.

Retiring Headland now is detrimental to the list.

What Selggad said. Des is so much better than any other option we have as a FF. With a bit of conditioning his touch & timing will come back and he will kick goals and set them up every week. Plus he adds leadership and hardness. Love to see him flanked by Walters & Balla with Drum playing CHF and Clarke / Sandi resting.

Unfortunately, there will at least be a couple. Absolute minimum 3. Plus Murphy and Thornton. Whether we pay them out this year, could then, I guess, be used to counter that as well though.

Unless they are definitely able to play at least 2 more years after this, they should be under the pump IMO.

It has to be carefully managed, because if it is done wrong, we could be where we started.

I think we need to give Campbell a chance like we did Spud.
Give him 4 weeks.
Keep DJ in, f*ck we dont really have anyone else anyways with Pav out.
Have Ballas as the crumber and Thornton doing what ever the f*ck he is doing cause its O.K at the moment.... I said O.K.... not rocking my world but o.k.

What he said.
Des forward, and McPharlin back and tell him to pull his finger out !!
Dessie is playing for his career no doubt !! But he's a keeper for mine !!
