This kid is an interesting one.
He has an "ideal" body size for football, has a thumping accurate kick and looks to have fitten in nicely this year.

Over the years though he has struggled to get a game and i am just interested to see where he is at?

Others may disagree with me but i think Grundy is ready to take his game to the next level. He has a very good mark, can kick long and is one of the more accurate players on our team. The only thing counting against him is that he is rather slow but i personally think that this is the year which Grundy will step up and prove his worth.

This year is a big one for Grundy, and 2009 is even bigger. If he can put in another huge preseason and improve his fitness and speed, then he could be anything. I've been a doubter since his debut, but the signs are there that he's ready to burst.

I am a big fan of Reg. All Swans supporters know of his debut where he kicked 3 goals and featured in the brownlow votes.

I think he could play a key part in the Swans future but not sure if he fits in better down back or up forward. Could be a 'swing man' capable of both??

I was surprised when Davis was dropped that he didn't get an opportunity up forward against Port but having said that he did well down back and kicked a great running goal.

Hope he really gets a chance to prove himself this year.

In the next couple of years we are going to need a big key forward, it would be great it Reg could be the guy for that spot - rather than recruiting someone.

i think you're right, and i think the signs have been there so far this season
he seems quicker, and far more desperate and persistent, especially in defence
i think he's now getting some confidence that he's in the team long-term as long as he keeps lifting

He has improved and will improve even more by the game.
We can all agree on that.

Looking at your list though, i can not see him losing his spot?
Is 22 games unreasonable from the Reg?

I think Grundy may be the one to lose his spot when Spida comes back in a week or two. I suppose its a good thing but when Fosdike, Crouch and Spida are fully fit there will be atleast 5 or 6 players who deserve a spot in the team but cant break into the 22.

Richards may find his spot in doubt too, once LRT is available to go back to defence.

There is something about Ted I really like. After about half a season with the Swans, his tendency to duck away from contests was knocked out of him, and since then he's time and time again put his body on the line for the Bloods cause. The images of him running until he literally dropped in the final quarter of the 2006 GF will live on with me for a long time.

But reality is, he will be the last picked backman once Spida returns. He's probably a more accomplished defender at this stage than Grundy, but I think Grundy's kicking is significantly better.

My main gripe with Grundy is that he is still hopeless when the ball hits the deck. If you watch footage of him in the forward line alongside MickyO in the Saints game, the difference in their reactions when the ball is there to be won on the ground is huge. I don't think it's laziness on Grundy's behalf - he just doesn't have the same instincts and doesn't seem to be developing them very quickly either.

And I don't think it's just that O'Loughlin is special in this department either. The fit version of Hall is also very competitive when the ball hits the deck.

Agreed, our young guns are not going to give up their first team spots easily.
They have a taste of the big time, and dont want to go back to playing in
Canberra!

I was actually thinking during the Port game that I reckon it was the first time he has actually looked comfortable at AFL level.

yeah, maybe he's seen how jack and bird look, and he's been there longer than them
they seem totally comfortable playing at this level, and maybe reg has just thought "fck this, if they can do it, i can do it"
coz he CAN do it

didnt he kick 5 on debut. wearing a south melb jumper(with cappers number)

I've been watching Reg pretty closely this year. I like what I'm seeing. He's just quietly sticking to his role and making no fuss about it. He has become very competent at spoiling a 50/50 long ball, uses his strength well, and he seems to force his man to move into the right parts of the ground in order to get a mark on him.

Of course he's taking the less dangerous forwards. But I think his immobility - which is probably what's cost him a chance to have a career at the Swans as a forward - isn't hurting him too much when he only has the 50m arc to patrol.

His potential as a forward is pretty obvious though. Taking that pass on 50 and slotting it through without a fuss against Port serves as a reminder of what he's capable of. Certainly, he could be the defender that goes forward as a target option. It's something we really miss in our makeup. Spida sort of filled this hole for us last year and is presenting well as a forward option for us. But Teddy's and Bolton's poor conversion rates have prevented either of them from really taking on this mantle.

It was also Reg who squeezed a kick out of congestion on the forward 50 arc to find McVeigh in space for Macca's first goal. He probably wasn't as impressive as last week but he still did some pretty good stuff.

To be fair Rancid, Grundy has been primed for KPP style roles in the last couple of years. These are more challenging positions to develop in rather than instructions of just go get the ball. The game on Westhoff was great and I am hoping it is the required confidence for Grundy to take the next step.

so why isnt he getting a game? not favoured by the coach? i also remember his debut and thought he was gonna a gun

oh, and instead of fisher, how about houlihan? need a HFF?
