Excuse me for interuppting....Does anybody on this board reside in Kalgoorlie or Boulder?

If you are moving out that way, I feel sorry for you. Still, it should be a step up from Adelaide :p

Hey Sera, if you think Kal is ordinary (quite like it myself), you obviously need a run up to Rippers Territory at Meeka.

Kal is darn good country and the people are not psychotic murders like some Croweaters.

Boulder was a great place to live.

Dont know about those people from Kal but!!

ONe of the north supporters lives up there, Im not sure but I think it was shinboners.

I've lived in Kal, but spent more time living in Leonora and Laverton.

You could do a lot worse than Kal. Good young persons town, like Darwin except without the mozzies, crocs and water.

Pretty expensive to live, though.

Have been meaning to ask if our Meeka contributers were involved heavily in the mining industry.

Not me , We are in service industry (need more industry since I have found Bigfooty ;). however my baby brother in Kal is and has been involved in mining for 15 odd years.

Topjars, Kal is one of WA's biggest country towns. In the 90's it amalgametd with Boulder and is now the city of Kalgoorlie & Boulder. It is a very historic place with lots of old world charm - mainly seen in the architecture. In the early 1900's every second building along Hannan st was a pub. Not now though but there are some good pubs. One of my faves was the boulder block but it got pulled down in the mid 90's to make way for the super pit.

Kal is predominantly a gold mining town and 70 % of business revolves around that. It used to be a real hard mans town with men to woman ration of 9:1. It has really changed for the better into more of a family community with less of your hard core miner types. Very laid back place. It is a very cashed up place with i'd say one of the highest average incomes in WA - but things are more expensive especially if your coming from adelaide. Speaking of which, it is similar to adelaide in the way that it doest tale you long to get anywhere(unless your going to perth).

Overall, if i had to live in a WA country town ( excluding the SW and Broome) i would easily be happy with Kal.
When you get there - join up with the Hannans club

Mate, I will officially whoop anyone in the 'shltty towns I lived in' competition. I lived in Cue for nine years, a town that made Meeka look like New York in comparison.

Ripper, you would have to travel through Cue quite a bit, wouldn't you? Has it officially become a ghost town yet?

Blocker, the mining industry was the only thing to be involved with if you lived in Cue. My Dad worked at ACM for three years, before transferring to Big Bell once Normandy took over. Up until a few years ago he was still with Normandy working at head office in Perth.

Not me though. The closest I ever came to working in the mining industry was going prospecting every weekend with my brother, having a delightful time digging up nails and tin cans in 40 degree heat.

Oh, and Kalgoorlie is pretty cool place.

Paddy Hannan is a dude. Good bloke to have a chat to, and will even give you a drink of water if you're thirsty.

Is that building with the pink doors still in business?

The place is about 97% male and used to be so rough that dudes wouldn't leave their barstools to go to the toilet. The driptray got a working-out instead.

It's a whole heap better now, but not much.

A mate of mine was running the airport for Ansett a few years back and was entertaining a client in the lounge bar of a large clean and decent pub. Being on duty and being a fat bastard he ordered a diet coke. The bloke next to him called him a **** and headbutted him in the face, knocking out two teeth.

It's a good thing he didn't order a fluffy duck.

I worked out of Kambalda for a summer or two when I was at uni - as Curley Wong's shotfirer. There's a real us v them mentality, where the mines and the miners who work them are reponsible for all the wealth in Australia and the mincing **** who populate our cities haven't got a clue and exist only to make it hard for the working bloke.

Kal's alright actually. Hell expensive though.

oohh I dunno - my sister and brother in law have lived there for the past 15 years... they've chosen the right path and are dockers supporters!

Their 8 year old, however, is a diehard Weagle. And they're such nice people... where did they go wrong??;)

I would have thought that was obvious. Kid's got the right idea though.

I was skinnier than a supermodel's whippet when I went out there and I was viewed very suspiciously by the blokes I was meant to work with. Fortunately they had a barbie on the first night I was there and I was able to demonstrate my manliness by drinking everything in sight. Going to bed with a skinfull at 4.30 am for a 5 o'clock start wasn't a great idea, but making it through the 12-hr day without slacking too badly earnt some small respect.

Work hard, drink hard, look out for psychos. You'll be right.

Clancy St Boulder, then basically on top of the Hidden Secret Open Pit to the east of town. The house even had a blast siren on top of it. It was a while ago, I'll admit.

I'm not a geophysicist.

Maate, Dockers supporter are from everywhere. I was born in the south central wheatbelt actually.

Just have to reiterate there may be some culture shock for some people upon first moving to Kal.
