Wow, prophetic.

You predicted that kicking more goals and allowing fewer would make the team better?

Wrong, numb nuts. I predicted that it wouldn't take that much to go from also-rans to contenders if we focused on defensive actions while 90% of this board was crying about how we were a bottom ten side and should blow up the list and start again.

The fact that it's the exact amount I said it needed to be is just icing on the cake.

Yeah, the thing is, we don't yet know if we're contenders. The good teams will present themselves come finals time, not in the minor round against North Melbourne, or Gold Coast, or Brisbane.

We've had some good wins for sure, but we've also dropped several games that we should have won, and got knocked out of the park by Essendon.

Also, your measurement of our improvement is heavily influenced by our blowout wins against shit sides. Sure, you can only beat who you play, and it's always nice to win by a lot. But I'd trade those 70/80/90 points wins for 30/40/50 point wins in a heartbeat, if it meant we'd beaten West Coast (at home), Geelong, and Richmond.

By all means, continue to act as if you're some sort of football genius, and the rest of us are #tacticallyilliterate, but your numbers mean nothing. Yet.

Dude, I don't care about anything but an unbiased measurement of performance. If we drop off, then it says we aren't good enough. And I don't think I'm some sort of 'football genius'. I think Ken has a good game plan, and I see the application of it across other sports, so I want others to give it a chance and not poo poo it every time it breaks down as the players are still learning it. That's all.

The #tacticallyilliterate thing was just a barb cause I can be a campaigner too :D

There are people on this forum who are never satisfied with the team's performance, unless we are either undefeated or have just won the premiership.

The general vibe of the forum is not quite as perfectionist but follows the form of the team more closely. Though not many are happy unless we are above expectations, which are very high this year.

People understood we were not that far off last year, but they either don't have the patience to wait for improvement, or don't have confidence in the coaching group to find that improvement.

That is why this year has been so turbolent on the forum. Those that are impatient/don't believe in the coach have been calling for Hinkley's head out of pure hyperbolic frustration, while on the other side those who think we are really close or believe in Hinkley are firing back with a lot of posturing about how the team will prove the doubters wrong, and everyone who doesn't see that is a campaigner.

In the end this year will either be extremely frustrating or extremely satisfying, especially with Adelaide in such good form. It's actually quite exciting.

Must admit I was one who thought we were miles off last year, and after the loss to Richmond in the pre-season was of the belief Ken would be the first sacked in 2017. Credit to him and the club for turning it around, where we now have a top 4 spot in our own destiny (and if offered that before round 1 I would have bitten your arm off). However…..

I am still highly sceptical that our game-plan that relies on forward territory and locking it in the F50 holds up against the elite talent teams, and in particular those with good kicking skills that move the ball quickly from the back half. The only side that we play before finals that fully fits that criteria is the Crows, which is why (in my mind at least) we need that scalp to prove this new game-plan can work against everyone. I have said previously that at times we look like Ross Lyon’s Freo (not an exact replica) but to me the bones of the game-plan look the same: dominant ruckman that controls the centre, defensive forwards who can tackle are more valuable than traditional forwards, kick to pockets and get repeat entries. Just not sure how that game-plan stacks up against the very best.

I might be a novice at this but aren't most teams fighting like hell to lock it into their fwd 50?
By the way Ross Lyon lost two GFs to teams smack bang in the middle of a dynasty. The other could've easily gone his way.

You certainly prefer the ball down your attacking end then the opponents, however it feels to me, with the number of defensive or unnatural forwards we play and our forward entries, that at times we are more concerned with field position, or locking the ball in then actually kicking goals.

I understand that this is a completely new style and there’s a good chance we haven’t got the balance right just yet, but other than round 1 (and no-one is entirely sure where the Swans were at, at that time) we are yet to beat a top side and I still have concerns that unless we get a favourable draw in finals we would be able to win a Prelim or GF with this style of play.

More than happy to be proven wrong tho!

Carn we're top 4 easy </sarcasm>

It is fairly clear based on those ladders that our expectations for finals or finals success should be low.

An easy mistake to make when looking at the premiership ladder is to give significance to the fact that we have the 2nd best attack and the best defence. This should put us in premiership contention. But those figures are heavily skewed by our performance against the also-rans who you don't play in finals.

Against the finals contenders we are just equal 10th for attack and 12th for defence. Completely mediocre.

My tip for Grand Final.
Adelaide, who have a proven record against all-comers.
Sydney, who have the hot hand.

My tip for Grand Final.
Adelaide, who have a proven record against all-comers.
Sydney, who have the hot hand.

6th vs 12th on the Front Track Skiiers ladder will play off in the GF despite struggling against shit sides?

Stats are like paint, you can create any picture you want.

These ladders are the epitome of bad data.

Current finals position ladder (versus top 8) - who cares how many top 8 teams you beat early in the season? The 6 teams that beat Sydney get no joy but if you beat Western Bulldogs, West Coast or St Kilda at the right time it counts. See the problem here?
Current finals contender ladder (versus top 11) - As above with more teams skewing the data
Flat track bullies ladder (versus bottom 7) - It's better to LOSE to bottom 7 teams? Carn.

If this tells me anything it's that we need to get our shit together fast because there is no standout team this year, anybody can realistically beat anybody, and there is a flag just begging to be taken.

Those ladders may not be pertinent to most teams, but I think they are for us. It shows that this season any team can beat any other team. Except us - and by coincidence, St Kilda. Games played earlier in the season may not mean much now, but you have to admit our form is fairly consistent.

This board is peak Bill Paxton after a loss.

In our last six losses we have kicked more behinds than goals (and in the seventh, v Adelaide, we kicked 12.11). This has only been the case in two of our ten wins. We've had an average of 23 scoring shots in losses, which would often be enough for a win (especially with our stingy defence). Is this perhaps where the coaches are coming from when they carry on about conversion, or do I have too much time on my hands and should just go and get a proper job?

No, it's exactly right.

When you're up against it, but manage to get scoring opportunities and fail to execute, it's like pushing water up stairs.

Misses like Dixon's and Atley's on Saturday, must be so deflating for the team.

We'd likely have three more wins this year, simply by executing set shots.

So let's play another tall key forward. Only problem is Ken doesn't want too.
