I know its a bit like polishing up a turd but if you swap Essendon and WCE between 8th and 9th our record goes from 1W-6L and 80.90% against the top 8 to 2W-6L and 95.90% which highlights we dont win against the big boys but we aren't getting smashed out of the park by them either.

PortWTF if its a relatively straight forward exercise, can you do the 3 ladders showing

1. Vs the top 4 sides ie Adelaide, Geelong, Sydney and GWS - yes I know that's not what the ladder says but these are the best 4 ides IMO

2. Vs the middle class sides in Richmond, Port, Melbourne, Essendon, WCE, WB, Saints and Hawks - yes Hawks as I reckon if they beat Sydney they will make the 8

3. Vs the cellar dwellers Collingwood, Freo, GC, Carlton, North and Brisbane.

I know it wont change Port's position but I'm curious to see how the middle class sides do against each other, because that will basically determine who finishes 5th to 8th and gets a home final.

Holy **** Batman. Our soft draw has absolutely shielded us this year. 1 win against an eventually quality side who were at the beginning of a 6 game losing streak. That's it! If we beat the Saints, all of our wins would have come against the bottom 10 teams (except the Dogs who we haven't played yet). The track can't get any flatter.

Why don't the media experts pull our coaches up on this?

When Bassett says we bounce back, the coaches aren't being challenged. It is SHIT

Great stuff mate. :thumbsu: :thumbsu: Beat the cellar dwellers of Collingwood and GC gets us to 12 wins. The key is beating the other middle class sides of of Saints and Bulldogs to get a home final. The showdown could be season defining.

To put our results into a neat little box, we win big against the bottom 10 teams and lose small against the top 8 teams. This demonstrates to me that we aren't that far off, but it does seem like we are miles off because of the fact that we basically never win any of these tighter games. As I mentioned elsewhere, give us even 1 or 2 of those games that we've been more than competitive in and lost and we are looking at a completely different season to what we are now.

Hopefully that's correct. Had 5 minutes...
PortWTF I know you did this quickly and appreciate it but there are a few errors as there are 8 wins and 9 losses and a draw ( GWS v Hawks in middle table) missing when you add up the 3 totals.

Changed the sorting rather than by points like the normal premiership table, but as a percentage of wins to games played against those teams. If you're interested.

Percentage is always a decent indictator of form over a season. In PortWTF's ladders it shows its hard to get big % results against the top 4 sides, the better sides get about 130%+ against the middle class sides and the top 8 smash the bottom 4 to 6 sides. I reckon if you did this excerxise at the end of the year for the last 20 years it would be a similar result every year.

I have data back to 2003 (yeah I'm a bit of a geek too):

Out of interest, just using our GF years as examples.

In 2004 the top 4 sides were Port, Brisbane, St Kilda and Geelong

The ladders are wrong. We beat Geelong - the umps just gave them the win on the scoreboard.

We are a solid chance of making finals and even though we will be underdogs, we will be a solid chance to win any finals match we play.

If PlayOnGate did not happen, we would be sitting second

Well done umpire

Another premiership ladder. This one shows results Rd 7-18 despite the headline by the Tsier of 7-17, as they forgot about the bye.

What it shows is that in this part of the season Sydney have been the standout team and there is only a couple of games difference between 2nd and 13th ie the reigning premiers.

2017 is set up for a Bradbury premiership.

All I'm interested in is who tops the ladder in rounds 24-27.

Make finals, and it's 3/4 games that you have to go undefeated in.

It doesn't affect the ladder ordering but GWS should be 5-4-2 not 6-5-0.

Haha I didn't pick that up, but lazy journo probably just rounded it up to 6 wins and 5 losses.

Hurling People Now continue to rate us 2nd by their stats analysis. Its our ratshit efficiency inside 50 is why we wont get to no.1 in their table. We are 13th for inside 50 efficiency. Our mids are rated first and defenders second in the league.

I am curious about our stats on disposals and time-of-possession.

Kicking a winning score is all about creating chances. One of the many interesting quirks about Aussie Rules footy is that there doesn't seem to be any accepted dominant strategy of how to go about taking these chances. Some sides like to pepper the goal with as many chances as possible, whereas others, if given the ball out on the boundary 45m out will kick it to the top of the goal-square in hopes of an easier shot. Obviously there are many factors which influence this decision, including but not limited to opposition quality, game state, each team's ability to catch a defence off-guard with swift ball movement, each team's ability to defend a quick turnover, and of course the player's ability to actually make the journey.

From above link.

The Hurling People blokes still rate us as number 2 but Sydney fast finishing. But they have picked up what a lt of us have been saying about our poor forward line.

The Swans are beginning to crest towards the “Premiership Contender” part of the HPN Team Ratings, which we loosely define as an overall team rating of more than 105% and individual component ratings north of 100%. After an extremely sluggish start down back, Sydney is now the third best side in the competition defensively – with a fair chance of leaping over Port into second.

We’ve mentioned this before, but the return of Dane Rampe has played a critical role to improvement. Some defenders are versatile, some are extremely good at their job, but Rampe is the rare combination of the two. Rampe’s return has allowed Grundy to move to a more negating role, and taken some of the pressure of Lewis Melican, who has blossomed as a result. Having Rampe’s ability to cover ground and contest as a their man up has allowed the other Swan half backs a little more freedom to attack knowing that there is a safety net behind. The Swans still have issues – namely in the non-Franklin, non-Papley parts of their forward line, but they are starting to approach their 2016 form.

Switching with Sydney this week is Geelong, who are a fundamentally different team without Dangerfield and Selwood. Duncan and Hawkins missing this week does not help either. The sprint towards finals has turned into a limp just as Geelong run into one of the harder parts of their schedule.

Port didn’t lose a place this week but they lost significant ground in everyone’s eyes including those of our ratings, with another loss to a top eight side on the resume. No-one doubts the raw talent of the Power forward line, but their ability to score against good defences is becoming concerning..........

Our coaches reckon its lack of method rather than lack of effort that has seen us drop away the last 3 weeks. This from tomorrow's Sunday Mail. Dont know if I buy that 100%. Sure we have lost our method but our effort has been down because we are tired. I dont give a stuff what the GPS figures say I can see with my eyes we are buggered.

PORT Adelaide has identified a breakdown in method rather than effort as the cause for its dramatic fall both in form and statistical rankings since its Round 18 loss against Melbourne at the MCG. Power assistant Aaron Greaves said the coaches sensed the form that had made Port Adelaide a top-four contender through the first 17 rounds was beginning to unravel against the Demons and it has been a matter of educating to players to reprise it ever since.

A key concern has been about players abandoning the game plan.

One problem has been players being sucked in to compete for the ball and therefore become vulnerable on the outside, another a lack of the defensive pressure that was there until the form slump set in three weeks ago. The changes in Port Adelaide from Round 1-17 and 18-20 have been staggering. Figures from the league’s official statistician, Champion Data, show Port Adelaide:

SLIDING from being the top-ranked team in the competition in contested possessions to 18th
GOING from first to last in inside-50s
FALLING from first to 18th for time spent in the forward half.
DROPPING from first to 16th in scores from stoppages, and
SLIPPING from second to 17th in scores from intercepts.
“I guess for us we had some concerns in the Melbourne game,” Greaves said........
...........
“It’s around our contest — our method around the contest — both offensively and defensively. “We have addressed that, we’ve trained it strongly and we hope to see a positive reaction and growth from that this week.” But despite the simplistic notion that winning the disputed ball is about endeavour and vigour, Greaves said hours of review had not suggested effort had not been part of the problem.

It was about smarts and trusting what had been taught; sometimes the solution was more about not trying too hard — which can lead to a collapse of the game plan. “I don’t think we can question our guys’ effort at all,” Greaves said. “Our guys, we know they always put everything out there. “It’s around our method — making sure that we have the basic principals right of how we want to compete for the contested ball, making sure that we have our structures correct: how we want to exit the ball and how we want to pressure the opposition...........
