Absolute BS. ******** poor attitude towards the game, add in an absolute joke of a backline set-up and a few absentees (most notably Brock Mclean, Jarrod Rivers and Clint Bizzell). Melbourne never ceases to be able to disappoint.

It looked like the Demons were going at it with all the intensity of an intra club pre-season match at Victoria Park. And the disposal skills seemed to reflect that as well. Disposal, particularly with the kick inside 50, was shocking.

If there was a 50/50 contest, the Blues would most likely win it, simply because they wanted it more.

The midfielders rolled out the red carpet for Carlton, as they won clearance after clearance. Something which at this stage, the club has failed to address even after last year's woeful midfield efforts.

Tactically, we still seem to think that David Neitz is the best option, even when there are three Carlton players surrounding him. The ease in which the Blues cleared the ball from full back to their forward line was baffling.

On a positive note, at least Sylvia had a crack. Look at the stats sheet and a number of Demons got into the possessions, but frankly we were lucky to only go down by a few goals.

From an outsider looking in I was perplexed at the performance of a few of your players. Yze and Johnstone were the worst of the lot, pathetic commitment displayed. Sylvia and Bartram and Davey were your three standouts, Syliva has quietly developed into one of the most courageous young midfielders in the league. Pickett did a few good things but I don’t see much left in the tank for Bryon. The defense was slaughtered; Waite and Fevola were allowed far too much space to work into. You should have plugged holes in the space they had to lead. Quite a pathetic performance I thought. And how many times did the midfielder simply bomb it into Neitz when he was surrounded by about 3 or 4 defenders? Far too often.

Some of us said it before the match. If there was a team to lose that game, it was Melbourne. Congrats boys. We deserved what we got.

Did anyone really not see this sort of performance coming after the Adelaide game?

There are 2 positives:
- There is absolutely no chance Daniher will get another contract, finally we will get someone with some different ideas at the club, and hopefully someone with some kind of game plan.
- This years draft is said to be a bumper crop.

I change my 5-8 prediction to 9-12.

As for the game; disgraceful. Nothing we haven't seen countless times under Daniher.

The game was already lost at the selection table when we decided to go in a player short by selecting both Jamar and Johnson for no reason what-so-ever. Sure enough Miller goes to the backline (and has a shocker) and we break down at half forward without him.

A blind monkey in Greece saw how stupid Jamar's selection was over Nicholson, Daniher you are a fool.

Anyway onto the Doggies next week, we will still win a reasonable amount of games as long as we completely dominate the midfield to gloss over a shocking game plan.

Damn!!
I can't belive it. What a shocker and we should have lost by more. The blues mix of rejects and youth worked alot harder to get back and fill holes in defence while more accomplished guys like trav and Yze seemed to just stroll around after a turnover.
Nietz was continually creating crumbs against 4 blokes when no one was there to crumb while Fev/Waite were given space to work on Ferguson/Carrol, either one out or on the lead. Daniher was outcoached, there was no change of tactics at all during the game and I can't remember seeing such poor disposal. As DEESTROY mentioned above, there was definetely one two many big, useless and uncoordinated men out there for the dees. One of Jamar/Johnson is enough.

Anyway, bring on next week. Its too early to give up now, We'll lift for the doggies. Silvia, Davey, Bruce were all good, Bartrum had a real crack.

okay, im going to play the devils advocate and disagree with you guys and your dim view of the season ahead and next weeks game

the dogs play a fast, agressive, free flowing type of game. we are good at that and can almost match them

tonight, we played a flooding, slow, stop start game and we suck at that, nearly always have.

if it gets into a shootout vs the dogs we stand a chance. far from favourites but stand a chance.

as for tonight, worst game ive seen melbourne play since well 2003 most likely, cant remember a specific game but there was bound to be one.

I agree with you, the Dogs play as unaccountable as we do. If White plays a blinder and the midfield dominates we are every chance.

I tipped this.

We are going backwards because our coach refuses to adjust to a changing game. Our list is completely different, but our coach is the same. So where does the problem lie?

Do we blame Yze, Bruce and Green because they are soft as butter, refuse to chase and are a disgrace to our jumper? Or do we blame Daniher for playing favourites and refusing the drop these "big shots".

Stupid selection, stupid game plan, stupid coach and what you get is this.
Absolutely fed up with this mediocrity cycle. If we're gonna suck, lets do it in style, go for draft picks and get Daniher sacked. Alternatively, drop the offenders and play only those willing to put their body on the line (even if they are new).

i guess you werent really watching on friday, our pressure and attack on the ball all over the ground was magnificent, was really great to see especially in the forward line
that said i really think melbourne are going to bounce back from this and put in a very good performance on saturday, i reckon its going to be really close
and good on ya sylvia, knew you were a good pic for the dream team :D i saw him against brisbane in the NAB and knew i had to have him

a question: Jamar and Johnson played shockers yesterday but you'll still need a second ruck, who do you think it will be? or do u just keep both?

They do have West and Cooney in the middle, hard at it and first to the pill, will tear apart the Dees mids if they play like yesterday. If that happens, then I wouldn't be surprised if they do to Melb what they did to the Tiges.

They didn't just get West and Cooney in the offseason, these players aren't new to the club. The Bulldogs play a brand of football very similar to Melbourne's in that there is very little defensive pressure.

When they (or Melbourne) dominate a game and own the corridor they look like a million bucks. When a team that puts in defensive pressure and contests hard takes on these kinds of sides, they often fold.

It would be foolish to think just because the Bulldogs beat Richmond by 100 points they are for certain any better than they have been in their past. Time will tell.

To say West and Cooney will tear apart the Dees midfield if they play like yesterday, no **** sherlock. As I said in the 2nd line of that quote "If White plays a blinder and the midfield dominates we are every chance." That is not 'playing like yesterday'.

I went along and it was disappointing to lose first up, although not end of the world stuff, but the style of game both sides played was horrendous.
Haven't seen that too often with games involving Melbourne of late - a couple of times against Sydney and once against the Crows over there late last year.
Even when we are losing regularly, we can play an attractive brand of football.
Not always smart footy, rarely hard, contested footy, but at least it looks good.
I just hope we will play some of the attacking footy we can in the coming weeks, to opt for that sort of stuff from yesterday would be hard to stomach, even if we won a few games.

Just remember that we got belted by Hawthorn in Round 1, 2004 and then reached the top of the ladder by Round 18 (although we went on to completely stumble out of the Top 4). So all is not lost yet.

Oh okay...So now we play the Dogs, Crows, Sydney, Roos and the Cats...Freo always has the possibilty of beating us at the G aswell as Hawthorn. Hmmm...Are we going to win a game? At all during the first half this season?

Above all, Shannon Motlop should be sent back to Sandy for the rest of his life. OK, we picked him up in unfortunate circumstances but that still doesn't mean he should get the sympathy vote. I'd have Chris Johnson or Bate in for him ANY DAY after the Carlton game. TJ and Greeny don't give a rats, and Neale's lost his marbles...Again.

BRING BACK BEN BEAMES!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets not go overboard here. As one win doesnt make you a certain finalist (Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn) one loss doesn't consign you to gloom and doom. The game was crap, the most boring i've ever seen, Carltons 12 man backline worked a treat and we didn't have a plan going inside fifty. Miller down back was a joke, last year he did well on Barry Hall, then Pav kicked 6 a week later. Lesson learnt, you would think. But no. He got towelled up by Waite. I give a pass mark to Neitz (tried to lift the boys), Sylvia, Moloney, McDonald and very few others, probably Brucey and White, although he will take a few games to be back to his best. Aaron Davey was our target at CHF, the last 3 kicks into our half-forward line went to him, and Johnson and Jamar were as useless as **** on a bull. All in all, it was the most boring match i have ever watched in my life, Whitey took a pretty big grab at the end, but by that time nobody cared. Also, we probably could've wrapped the game up in the 10 mins before half-time. It was the worst 10 mins of footy ive ever watched, from both sides, and the most frustrating. Neitz, Davey and Neitz again hit the post, while Moloney had a shot from 50 that landed about a metre out and span BACKWARDS. it was so frustrating. Anyway having said all that, we are that hot and cold that im tipping us to beat the dogs:D

Let's face it, not much has change from last year or the year before. We have the talent but the team isn't firing. Perhaps ND is old and stale... perhaps he should ******** off and let someone else take over because we are going nowhere.

Weak. Just plain weak. Mentally as well as physically. You half expect it with us, but it was still painful to watch from half way thru the first quarter onwards.

Three obsevations about the coaching panel.

- It was painfully obvious that we were a tall defender short, injuries really meant that was always goin to be the case. Moving Miller back I could've copped, IF they had played someone at CHF in his place!

- We carried too many blokes below 100%. The most worrying thing is that many Dees forums are demanding the instant return of yet more blokes below 100% (McLean, Wheatley, Bizzell, C.Johnson, Rivers). Plain stupidity all round IMO.

- Lappin. 2 minutes in I muttered to Cowboy From Hell "I bet we'll let him cut us up all night". Just slack.

A complete lack of leadership from anyone, this didn't surprise me but It really should.
