I played in a lightning carnival team that lost by 150 points in two 15 minute halves. That was a tough game.
At least it was over in half an hour...

Some media ( Channel 7?) promoting this is a good story.

I think the opposite . Its terrible

. I dont know much about the league/teams involved but country footy is in big big trouble when things like this happen. Can destroy clubs and communities

Totally agree. I certainly couldn't find any human interest or humour in this story. TBH its certainly a damming reflection on the sad state of country footy in Victoria. I would like to know exactly how many small towns in recent years that have lost their footy team totally through lack of players or interest or have been forced to merge with another town nearby?

For many of these smaller township communities, the folding of their local footy team is just another nail in the coffin of their existence with their local bank, school, post office, railway station, supermarket, church etc already closed down or moved to another larger city.

Unfortunately IMHO it would seem that the AFL doesn't really care about this problem and virtually ignores this vital element of football's grass roots and thinks that the Aus kick participants are the only numbers that count towards the health of country football.

I remember a game in Under 12s where my team defeated a team from Richmond 167-0, playing at their home ground (I should add that there were 20 minute quarters without time on, so adjusted for regular length quarters I guess this was roughly equal to a 250-0 win). These guys had clearly never played footy before. They could hardly barely pick one up, let alone kick it, and it only got into their forward 50 once or twice throughout the game. They played four games in our division, scoring a single behind in total, before being demoted to the lowest division (4). Even there, they didn't even come close to winning a game*. Even as overly competitive twelve-year-olds, the whole game felt downright ridiculous - and we couldn't help but feel slightly sorry for them.
That said, this was a team of boys who'd clearly never played much, if any, footy before. They'd decided to give the game a go and though they were awful at it, I'm sure some of them enjoyed it and maybe still play or follow the footy now that we're seven years into the future. I suspect a similar thing has happened here: people who've never played footy before have decided to give the game a go.
To the people claiming that this is symbolic of the death of country footy, I ask: do you think it's a bad thing that awful football players are playing the game? Do you want clubs to reject such players in spite of their enthusiasm or enjoyment to preserve an evenly leveled competition? I for one think it's great that these guys, in spite of their ability, get the opportunity a great game.
*I can't resist humblebragging here that my team meanwhile got promoted to the second division, and the percentage we gained from that game qualified us for finals where we managed to win the grand final after finishing fourth on the ladder.

From someone who has been involved in country footy, some leagues stop this time of year (over in WA, and in NSW) during seeding / harvest. Not sure if Smythedale is in cropping country so whether that would be appropriate in this case.

Chances are this is simply a case of players being unavailable, i'd wonder how many u14's players were topping up the side.

Like some other posters I dont see the funny side of it country town footy teams are often just hanging in there in terms of numbers, and results like this make that challenge all the greater.

I want to know who was the Gordon player whose opponent kicked a goal?
Surely he's looking at a stint in the reserves or a bench/vest start next game!!!

My memory is a little hazy but there was a game Footscray v Carlton at the Western Oval in mud and rain. Carlton only kicked one goal, late in the game. I think it was Mark Arceri and Super McPherson was that pissed that he looked like the wanted to rip someone's head off and eat it.

The result is not good for anybody. Demoralising for smythesdale, who have had a few tough years but are working tirelessly to improve. Doesn't do much for Gordon. It is an 18 team league that also had a 30 goal and 20 goal loss in the last round, demonstrating how uneven the league is and the need for action

That's pretty serious stuff for Under 12's!

Geelong West at Williamstown on 23/7/1983 (U19 3rds VFA Game)

Williamstown 15.9 44.17 76.20 110.27 (687)
Geelong West 1.0 1.0 2.0 2.0 (12)

Where'd you dig that up from?

I've tried to find it a few times over the years.

What about the two 90 + goals in the same season, can you find them?

The reason they played was because the club were told they'd be thrown out of the VFA if they couldn't field 3 teams each week.

With regards to the 110 goal game, I had a mate play in it who had never played sport in his life, let alone footy and actually had a broken arm in a cast at the time.

He played so that they'd have the bare minimum (either 11 or 13) to start the game.

Towards the end of the VFA clubs were literally grabbing blokes off the street to play. Happened to a mate of mine who happened to be having a kick at Camberwell's ground one day.

The poor Roosters were struggling to field a team in all three grades at home, and a lot of players they did have in the lower grades simply refused to travel to Melbourne to play.

I recall reading of a game where they started with barely enough numbers to avoid a forfeit, and then two of the kids got hurt, they and ended up playing with 10 or 12 players (when the VFA had 16 a side) is this that game?
