Same thing thats happening this year happened last year as well. Hot pies at the start of the season. Come the crunch we get done in games that should be automatics. I was thinking that the boys do altitude training in Arizona about 4 weeks out from the NAB cup. Is it possible that we are peaking far too early as a result of this altitude training and in the latter part of the season we seem to be slowing down, less numbers at the contests and not running out games. Althought high altitude training is great I think it could work out to be collingwoods detriment as well. Thoughts?

They should send them up to Mt Hotham mid week for a couple of days & make them all snow shoe out to Feathertop.

In any highly publicised training event like say a week off in Queensland during the break week in the finals, the introduction of the Lexus Centre and the Arizona training camp, if we are winning it's going to be praised brilliantly, and if we are losing it will be the reason why we are losing. A training camp like that is not going to have any adverse affect, perhaps the affect is overrated but it can't hurt.

Because the team is Stuffed at the End of the Season - Thought the Arizona Trip was to fix that:mad:

I don't think it ever was. The benefits may wear off, but how can you say we struggle because of the Arizona trip? Besides there is no harm in a trip that encourages improvement and team solidarity.

It seems to me we lack class and ability across the board but our big pre seasons have seen us finish games strongly in the first half of the year. Eventually everyone ends up about as fit as each other and we lose our edge. Last year we were 8 wins from 11 and fell away. This year has been very similar. I don’t think the early and hard start hurts us late, I think it helps us early and we come back to the field. We have the deficiencies we have had for a long time. Better training gets us wins in the bank but it won’t get us a flag until we have a better list.

This year we can take encouragement from a number of young players who look promising on top of the confirmation of the ability of H. Shaw, Thomas and Pendlebury. Realistically we are still a ruckman or two, a quick skilled mid and an inside mid off being a contender though. That is why we are not winning these games. This is a massive post season for our club. We must trade/draft well.

Agreed.

So you think that Arizona has little effect either way?

Actually, MM reign as coach has seen us (except 03) fade away in the 2nd half of the year. I also think that his last season at WC saw them win 12 games without a loss and fade in the finals.

I think there is more to it????

its not just about the high altitude, its good for team bonding and just getting away from melbourne

and if it helps us run over one team in the first 12 weeks,it has done its job.its a cut-throat buisness now,you have to do anything for a edge over the competition

That has definitely occurred to me and no doubt quite a few people, but at this stage it's just speculation. YOu can't make any assumptions from 2 seasons, it could be a coincidence. The other possibility is that the effect is to make a fairly average developing team play above themselves for half a season, and then just return to being average - ie it buys some wins early without actually having a bad effect later. if that's the case then why not?
It's definitely a bold innovation but like all innovations you can't be sure if it will backfire. There'll be another altitude camp next pre-season so this time next season (or if we're lucky in 3 or 4 weeks!!) maybe we'll have a better idea. Until then just have to wait and see and assume the best for now.

Without altitude training we may never had made the eight.

Thoughts?

Just another freebie for a bunch of overhyped ,overpaid bunch of ordinary
footballers.

No membership,until premiership.

Altitude training would have absolutely no effect on tired legs during the season.

The whole idea of altitude training is to train where the oxygen in the air is reduced so it makes your cardiovascular system more efficent when it comes to performing at sea level as your body can make more use of the extra amount of oxygen.

They also have a chamber at the Lexus Centre to help maintain this as i'm told.

It would have absolutely no effect on anything other than areobic fitness (maybe a small amount of recovery), and could only be of benefit to the players.

Good analysis but additionally it is like injecting EPO - benefits are short term but because you can train harder due to the increased amount of oxygen, you body can adapt to this harder conditioning which would last longer. Unfortunately this cannot last long term either but it does extend the benefits.

No I think it wins us games early but we come back to the field when everyone catches up. Hard to really be sure though. At the AGM two years ago Eddie said the main purpose was to give a set up for a big preseason. To that extent I think it works. Whether it makes the season too long is than something I think needs examination - particularly with younger players.

I read that it only lasts for 2-3 weeks. Thats why they purchased the altitude tents. So, all the players would have to sleep in those tents every day for about 14 days straight to get 2-3 weeks of benefit. It may have helped a small percentage but its nothing great, its not miraculous.

It directly benefits your body for 2-3 weeks but as you can train harder in that timeframe, your body can adapt to harder work which means whilst the altitude training benefits are gone, that fact that you could train harder means your body still has the benefits for an extended time (maybe until about round 15)
