I actually thought I saw him go into heavy situations quite a few times and win the ball and then look up and see NO support from his team-mates. Tackle and turn-over result. But could you blame him as he did the right thing in the first place??

This is what I saw on occasion as well. Stupid to jump on a kid like Hogan after a game where maybe three players played to their potential. He's certainly not up to doing it by himself yet, but has shown good things last year. His goal from 50m in the last quarter against the Hawks in our comeback was a ripper, and earned him some time in my book anyway :D

Agreed. I really don't know how he's getting a game at the moment. His disposal is very ordinary and worse under pressure. I can't for a moment believe we wouldn't get the same or better output from Duncan or Menzel.

He may improve, and there is still time, but for now he has to pick up form in the seconds. Because he doesn't deserve a game based on Friday's effort.

I do not feel fully qualified to make this statement but I will anyway (just not seen enough of the players concerned to be fully confident about an assessment) - I cannot see Hogan being as good as either Duncan or Menzel. Early days I know - but I just get the feeling 1 or 2 of these boys will make it.

Hogan I think will be like Moles at the Doggies - a good ordinary footballer. I actually think Prismall is a better footballer than Hogan but obviously Knights might not agree with this assessment !

A few weeks in the reserves will give him confidence to be the player we hoped for based on last years work.

Duncan will benefit from his absence and make the team stronger and further developed for the future.

they tried hogan as a tagger when ling was out, does anyone think that's the role the club should use hogan in?

Well as I've said on another threads, we'll need a tagger in about 2 years so we should try and develop one, so I'm all for the club trying it with Hogan. Whether he'll succeed at it though is another matter.

Having a defensive mindset might stop him from making creative decisions I'm not sure he's capable of. That's been his downfall this year, as I see it.

Certainly worth a try. Will need to bulk up quite a bit. Would get muscled too easily with his current frame.

We've also got to remember that being "up to it" in a team like this requires a player to be at a level far advanced than those who are "up to it" in most other teams.

I tend to think the opposite is true. I've always felt that players will look better when slotted into a successful team with a functional structure. It's already been mentioned that Prismall seems to have stagnated at Essendon but looked well and truly good enough at Geelong.

If Travis Varcoe and Richard Tambling swapped career paths I dare say we'd have different opinions of both.

So back to Hogan. Is he good enough? I don't know. But I'm glad the Geelong selectors are in charge and not the posters in this thread, otherwise there'd be no due processes in place to actually find out.

Echoing the observation about Hogan lacking support. He turned it over when the game plan wasn't being executed properly, in that where he was clearly expecting a team mate to be, there was either no-one or an opponent. He doesn't have the experience yet to ad-lib the structures but I think he's worth sticking with for at least 2011, so he can get up to the 40 - 50 game mark.

Rahilly: The Return.

And FWIW, I haven't begun to lay the boots in 'cos it's the cool. I've always struggled to see what the attraction has been. He's vanilla, just like Prismall.

Saw more in Duncan and Menzel in 5min of training in January than I ever have in Hogan. Might be a great bloke, life of the party and as fit as a fiddle, but just not up to it. May turn out to be a Carrazzo or thereabouts.

Wonder if they'd play Dash FP or something, put some mongrel up forward forgoodnasakes.
If not, we're finished 2010!

Those calling for his delisting or trading are surely taking the piss. Fair enough his form has been poor (thought he was alright against Hawthorn but apart from that...) and he should be dropped, but to draw a line through his name is just ridiculous.

Hogan lacks polish under pressure but I see enough in him to believe that he can improve immensely. Might never be an absolute elite player but I think he can be a good B grader.

For some reason he reminds me of Kelly circa 2005. I think a lot of the criticisms are pretty similar.

^^ Couldn't agree more. :thumbsu:

I also agree.

The way some of you have spoken in this thread is a disgrace. Yes, he's no gun at this stage, but for heaven's sake give the person (not the player) a little respect! He works hard and I'm pretty sure he has the desire to succeed, there's no need to speak of him as if he's a violent criminal that needs to be removed from society.

I'm mainly talking about a few overly harsh posts in particular. But my point still stands.

Who did this , I cant find the post. Quote it and point a finger . Criticism should be football related , anything beyond that should be off limits.
