Is Glass second string? I just can't see this argument fitting with your best 2 key defenders. Your third tall, for sure, but lock your best 2 in for permanent positions.

Good point Gav. Rutten would be another example.

If anything, Lyon sees Silvagni as more value to the team because of his flexibility.

I'm quite happy that we have a stay at home FB that allows McPharlin to be more damaging by roaming at the CHF spot.

You reckon? That's a possibility. There are a few things that make me think Lyon wants to see more of Silvagni before he rates him as highly as Freo fans do.

1. Lyon said in his first press conference that how your pre-season goes determines how well you do in regular season. Silvagni's yet to play a game for Freo in the pre-season. This pre-season has been run with getting the best 24-27 players available ready for round 1.

2. Silvagni has played forward in the WAFL. There's every chance Lyon is unsure whether Silvagni is able to cut it in his defensive line up and wants to see what else he can do.

3. Previous form counts for little. He made mention that only Mundy, Barlow and Sandilands were likely immediate call ups, because of their class. Silvagni doesn't feature. Why? ...

4. One off good games from a single person don't matter. Remember against Richmond where he said McPhee was the likely benefit of good work up the field? McPhee had a great game, but Lyon obviously believes that his role and the team playing to their structures allowed him to play well. Silvagni's great games against Buddy, Brown? Perhaps these were the result of something else. I would imagine that they don't feature in Lyon's thinking.

I find the idea that, if fit & raring to go, Silvagni won't be selected for Rd 1 so absurd as to defy belief. So I'm just going to go on believing he's building his tank, getting minutes in the WAFL for whatever reason. He's quality. Should play. Will play.
Silvagni is not being selected at the minute because he has an injury, nothing to do with Lyon not rating him
E Shed your right if Silvagni is fit he will play Rd 1

Yeah, but my best two key defenders are SNOS and Macca, leaving Dawks twiddling his thumbs, which would be a problem. If SNOS plays forward, that resolves my problem and doesn't compromise my defence too much.

Good point, others are in the same boat. It's more do with his fitness otherwise Lyon would surely want to see how he goes about it?

Why not put Grover up forward as well then? Lyon hasn't seen him either.

Notice Morabito doesn't feature in there as well as a few others. I don't think his comment should be taken in that vein as its a general remark to elite players we have and I suspect the same applies on other teams.

4. One off good games from a single person don't matter. Remember against Richmond where he said McPhee was the likely benefit of good work up the field? I'm not sure what more you can do as a KPD than shutting down 2 of the elite power forwards in the game. Especially considering quality and play of our midfield in those games.

I do agree about Lyon's structures which makes sense, he wants players that play the roles demanded of them and play them well regardless of their other skills or attributes. The players qualities should contribute to the whole.

In fairness to Grover, he is 32 years old and has little football left. There is no point in trying him anywhere but defence, where he has played for over a decade. Lyon would have seen plenty of him as opposition coach.

Silvagni's played little over a season's worth of AFL games. He is a much more unknown quantity.
