Does anyone know how AFL players get paid?

What I mean is when I work, I get paid my salary every two weeks.

Contractors get paid at the end of their jobs.

How do AFL players get paid?

Lump sum? A base amount then monthly throughout the year? Fortnightly over the course of their contract?

Also would they have tax taken out for them or would they have to do it themselves?

Exhorbitantly.

But seriously, I expect it would be a monthly or periodic direct transfer to the player's manager, who would then deduct a leech-worthy percentage and then deposit into the player's account or however they've worked it out between them.
But I know absolutely nothing about it. :D

It would depend on the club and the player on how often they get paid. But tax and super is taken out of their salary just like any other employee of the club, and paid directly into their accounts - not to the managers.
Some players have their own 'companies' where money is paid into the company but otherwise, players are just another "employee" of the Club.

I think at the Lions it is a 6 monthly 'salary' payment and a 6 monthly 'match and bonus*' payment, paid alternately so they get a payment every 3 months.

(bonus payment - e.g. played 22 consecutive games or the likes and they get a bonus)

I think it depends on the player as well.

I remember hearing one player talk about it, and they said his manager takes care of everything. Salaries, bills, mortgages, investments.

I suspect it is on a monthly basis, like most highly-paid people, which also allows the clubs to manage their cash flows better, and also tie the payments to monthly mortgage payments, etc.

When I was working at a tax firm a few years ago the firm we shared office space had an AFL player as a client. I asked the partner of the other firm how he was paid and he said it really depended on when the club could get the cash - but it was pretty much a few lump sums during the year with allowances for travelling and stuff.

The player's association have a good site that has the Collective Bargaining Agreement (including minimum wages etc)

http://www.aflpa.com.au/

minimum Match payments for Matches played for the first half of the Coca-Cola AFL Premiership Season (listed on the official team sheet) shall be paid by the 15th day of July and minimum Senior Match payments for the remaining Matches played in the Coca-Cola AFL Premiership Season by 30 November provided that in the case of a Player in the final year of his contract with an AFL Club, the minimum Senior Match payments for the remaining Matches shall be paid by 31 October of that year.

I used to work with a now 2 time premiership, 250 game player who told me that he pays a higher rate of tax than Joe Citizen, even though they may earn the same amount. The figure, at the time, was 60% in the dollar, but this was before the reforms to our current tax system when GST was introduced. Thats only from memory.

Thats the main reason why people like Greg Norman moved to the US because they are able to save massive amounts on tax.

Anyone know if there is still a different tax rate for AFL players or sportmen and women in general these days???

Cheers

:D The reason Greg moved to the US was so he could perfect his choking technique against real players.

There's no separate tax bracket for sportsmen. If they pay more tax than Joe Citizen it's because their income is higher.
