Analysis How do we score?

He played multiple positions as a junior, and has dominated school footy playng as a forward at times.
It's only as part of the TAC that he's played KPD.
So it's not foreign to him at all.

Yeah I've seen him play forward but he just doesn't look as natural up there like he does as a backman.

On paper, this is the worst forwardline I can recall Carlton having in the last 35 odd years.
Only Walker, who isn't even a KPP, has kicked around 50 goals in a season before.
We don;t even have the small forwards anymore. AT least with Betts, Garlett and Yazz there was some sort of strategy.

But here's the thing. The way I see it, there is still hope.
Remember when Fevola went from inconsistent, petulant player to a (petulant) star forward? Well I try to be optimistic and view Levi in the same way. Can 2016 be the year he finally arrives as a genuine big bodied forward capable of commanding the F50 area and regularly kicking goals?

If not, Walker and Everitt are the only players we have who have shown they can consistently score.

I haven;t seen much of Gorringe but he seems a bit wishy washy from what I have seen. Hopefully I am wrong and he surprises as the next Kouta. But I am not sure.

I think we have to start c.curnow forward he had so much to offer.
I like casboult at chf as the link man so we can get it out of defense.
Walker is a dead eye for goal so he goes straight to full fwd.
Smith isn't a crumbing forward but his values will lie as the defensive pressure fwd who prevents opposition run and carry from there Backline.
Everitt does his best work with ball in hand rather than receiving, put him on the wing or fwd flank.

I don't think we'll score heavily but the aim is through defensive structures and pressure acts not to be scored against.

I don't think we'll see many scores north of 100 but likewise the aim is to ensure the opposition is restricted to 80.

I agree Richie should play as much as possible and in the forwardline.

Problem with this setup is, when the ball hits the ground we are stuffed. Nobody can really crumb a goal, and nobody can apply forward pressure to keep it in. We really need Clem or Galluci to play a role.
I did wonder about that when I put those 6 names in there. We could use Daisy or Clem down there. I'd like to see Bolts use a few different combinations so we end up with the right mix.

I think as someone alluded to earlier, this year will be about process (bedding down the game plan) and defence, both but in particular the latter to try and limit the carnage.
We won't kick anywhere near large scores, so look for set-ups and a game style to keep it a low scoring contest.
It could be like this for a while actually, until our young forwards develop.

Again though I stress things could change slightly if Casboult can have a break out year and become a genuine key forward of note within the competition. He has looked far trimmer getting to more contests easily, this pre-season, so that is a positive sign.

Things can turn around pretty quick. If Casboult has a break out year and if Walker has another 50 goal year, then suddenly our forward prospects look very different.

But chances are 2016 will be a hard slog with an emphasis, both game style wise and structurally to make it hard for the oppositionto score.

Daisy was lively up forward at times in 2014... and remember when Murph actually kicked goals? This year should all be about structure and ball movement across the field, (as others have said) whatever forward line we cobble together is just a stop gap until C.Curnow and pals are ready to step up.

I don't get the why people want casboult to play FF, he is the CHF
He chases really well, he kicks better from further out (40-50m) than when he's close (less than 30m)
He can crash packs which give our mids better room for crumbing around those packs.
I like what I saw of McKay, albeit not long, but he seems a natural forward who has a good kicking style.
He could play FF, so he doesn't get overcooked up & down the ground.

Get ball kick goals not a genius to know that.

Most important is whether we have a proper system for going into our F50 & a plan for overcoming the various opposition defensive set ups. You can make ordinary forwards look a million dollars if you have a cohesive forward system. What this means is it is not about the names you have in your forward line. It's all good to have quality forwards, but you can kick goals without them.

I agree 100%. The ball needs to enter our forward line in a way that plays to the strengths of the players down there. So, if Walker has a tall opponent let him lead him up and down the ground. If he has an opponent that can run with him ensure he can mark one-out. Kick the ball to space to let Everitt run on to it or make sure Kerridge/Graham is front and centre for the marking contest. Make sure that Cas does not have his run-up to the marking contest blocked (by ensuring our forwards block out their opponents from interfering).

One of the reasons Hawthorn has won 2 flags since losing one of the premium KPF in the game is because they play to the strengths of the individuals playing forward. Gunston and Breust do not have to compete in big marking contests, The ball is almost never directed to Puopolo (who earns his keep from being a nuisance and creating space for Rioli and others), etc.

Do you see Levi as a leading forward or as a pack marking forward?
I believe that your answer determines which position he plays.
I believe he needs to be involved in general play, not necessarily as a ruck though, so I would have him at CHF.
FF could be Jaksch as a leading forward or Kreuzer, Gorrenge, Phillips as stay at home type forwards.
I like what I saw from Gallucci against * so would like him in the forward setup asap.
