How do we use the sub?

It's not even close to being the dumbest rule in the last decade. That honour goes to the "post it note" interchange debacle. There's daylight between that one and the 2nd place getter, which may (or may not) be the substitute rule.

Haha, yea, you're right, I forgot about that bit of insaneness.

Doughty be our sub?

Can play back and in the middle, and he's old.

I object to being "used" in any manner, thanks!:)

So many people expecting alot from Smack next year, I saw a few quotes saying he can hold a KP better than Sellar and can also offer more in the ruck... The kid has played 1 game and looked really out of his depth. I hope he develops into the player he has the potential to become but there are way to many people counting the chicken before its hatched.

He looked fine in that game. He would have played the following week but broke his arm in training.

People rate him because he'll be a good player. Simple as that. It's not some white hope. He has talent and a lot of it.

I actually think he looked alright. Didn't get a lot of game time or opportunities playing deep alongside Tippett. But the few plays he was involved in he actually looked quite capable and showed great defensive pressure (laid a couple of strong tackles) and took a few good marks.

I wathed that replay the other day to have a look at Tambling and also Mckernan. I liked what I saw that game, he is very lively and competitive. Would certainly have played the following week had he not broken his arm.

I think clubs have got to be really careful when trying to "exploit" the sub, if you try to be too cute, I think you'll get burnt. For mine its pretty straight forward, we must now approach a game as if we're back to the old 18+3 system(which it still is in the SANFL and all amateur leagues in SA).

The sub IMO must be a midfielder/utility and should be held in reserve until either late in the 3rd or early in the 4th, unless of course injury strikes earlier.

Otherwise if you do cop an injury and you've already subbed a player out at half time, you're suddenly down to 2 players on the interchange bench. If you can manage to get to halfway through the 3rd without an injury, then you can think about subbing in a fresh runner, but otherwise you're just leaving yourself far too exposed to an injury or two.

i can see this getting messy like the interchange rule has been at times. Better make sure only 1 comes off when the sub comes on and not do a rotation at the same time, could end up subbing out a cruicial player for the day!

The only reason the interchange rule has been messy is because players have been too lazy to wait an extra half a second for the player they're replacing to properly cross a white line. Its really one of the few black and white rules in the game today, surely we should be thankful for one less rule requiring "interpretation" from the green or orange maggots. Its a simple rule and clubs only have themselves(or the offending players) to blame if its stuffed up.
