I enjoy my beer by pooring into a nice long chilled glass from the fridge. Only problem is quiet often it loses its head. I know that eating fatty foods such as chicken can make a beer go flat but why does a clean glass go flat when I'm not eating?
I wash the glasses then rinse them in water as all true beer drinkers do. I never let my girlfriend wash my beer glasses as she doesn't rinse them and that always ends up in a flat beer.
It happens the most when I drink Coopers Pale Ale which is what I drink most often.
Any tips on how to have a perfect glass that keeps its head?

There is a theory that you never let soap even touch your beer glass. When washing it, use only warm water. I suppose this means you'll have to wash it not too long after having your beer, so you don't get crusties forming on the inside or the rim of the glass.

I'm not really sure if the theory's correct though.

I think it's more to do with the selection of beer (can't say I recall ever pouring a Cooper's Pale Ale), size of the glass, pouring technique, and making sure you don't give the beer enough time to go flat. ;)

Warm water and soap. Rinse immediately. Fill glass, dip in chilled water.

That's the technique I remember them using at 'The belgian beer pub' or something like that on st kilda road. Expensive, but each beer has it's own special glass and stella artois has never tasted so good.

Remember, NEVER use beer glass(es) for anything other than Beer.

Philistines the lot of you, except Darky. One should NEVER use detergent on a beer glass. It aderes to the walls of the glass and prevents bubbles from forming - hence, flattens the beer. One must only ever use water to rinse out your beer glasses.

Try rubbing the inside of your glasses with a bit of steel wool. This will roughen the surface and thus provide plenty of sites on which bubbles can form. Yes, I'm serious!

I think it is time for a beer forum and I believe we have found its moderator.

I could have sworn it was ok to use some soap, providing you rinsed it right away.

Nothing beats a pewter mug I reckon.

.

It is! At least according to the beer makers at Cascade Brewery. The glasses should be washed in hot soapy water for hygiene purposes then rinsed out in cold water.

Yes I was thinking of not using soap but how the hell can that be hygienic?
Does anyone work in a pub?
How do they wash glasses?
They would have to use soap and I always get a long lasting head right to the bottom.
I take my beer drinking seriously. I'm trying to recreate the rings on the glass you get when taking a mouthful at the pub. You know what I mean.? You pick up tilt back then place back on the bar and you have a nice foamy ring around the glass where the last beer level was. Ahhhhh lovely.
I drank out of stubbies for years when I was younger but now prefer to pull a glass out of the freezer when watching TV or having dinner at the table that sort of thing.

Speaking of a glass of beer. Must be time for another one.;)
Cheers.

I have helped out friends who owned a pub, pretty sure those glass washing machines, work on pressure & hot water, but not too hot as to break the glasses, never saw them add soap to the washers.

I always wash my beer glasses in hot water only & use a bottle brush to make sure any scum is removed.

Is that how you make some of the Collingwood supporters let go of the glass.:D

Easy walk up to the bar and ask for one. Hand over some cash and enjoy.

Seriuosly though it's al to do with how the glass is washed wether it will hold a head.

There are a few products around. Ring Bells bar supply's. They'll help.

Then you obviously paid real close attention. The glass washers must have soap added...........it's all about hygeine.

It's more detergent without the suds. Under the Washer there usually is a container where you put the diluted detergent in which will be used by the washer.
It's than rinced at the end with hot water.

There is a pub in the family.

soap/suds....we're nit picking. I work in a pub and it's definitely more than water. Detergent will make suds/soap, no matter how diluted we make it.

My sentiments on the subject agree with those who posted along the line of, "just drink the damn beer."

Most of my fine crystal consists of plastic Royals cups I've filched at the baseball games.

Lately, I've bought a dozen of these:

They are a little foof, but cool nonetheless. I've found that taking them, or a thick-handled mug, and storing them in the freezer enhances the drinking experience. Frosty glass. Mmmmmm frosty glass.

I don't like my beer to kick up a head though. Just pure gold with little lines of bubbles making their way upward.

Anyone here like beer?
