AFL Club
Fremantle
With Perth being a more expensive city.

I think it should be a level playing field, i am also unhappy with the Commission just handing money to teams such as Melbourne. They get fined then handed cash...

it's all bullshit mate. We'll make them look like fools when we win next year though.

Im gonna go out a limb...

Clubs should not be penalized for having a big fanbase. The Commission forks out cash to GWS, Brisbane, Gold Coast and where does this money come from? The bigger clubs... It seems as though there are no benefits of having a big following.

it's a rort. seriously.

COLA my ass... it's a leg up so that Sydney never bottoms out, as the AwFL need it to boost TV royalties in NSW.

if anyone needs extra space in the cap to retain and recruit talent, it's the WA clubs... it feels like the talent is just going one way, can't even convince our poached talent to come home.

we spend top 5 in the comp on football department, not really that concerned about sydney's cap when we have 2/3m+ to spend on other stuff that they don't have.

A good project would be to analyise the 2014 draw and the respective unpaid hours that traveling team's players do not get compensation for.

I.e. An AFL player spends 40 hours / week training , playing , recuperating , getting lectures on game plans etc, all of which makes them a better player.

We need to calculate the extra hours that they spend traveling and work out what percentage of time that they spend .

It would then be a simple process to add the difference of the least traveled team to the more traveled teams and add that to the SC of each club

I would suggest that the trip to the Airport would be assumed to be the same as a trip to the ground in the teams home state.
The trip from the Airport to the interstate destination and return would be added to the flight time.

These figures should be given to the AFLPA to lobby for change, so ALL players are treated equally.

I have no problem with it. The northern state teams have 80%+ of their players relocating. It is a lot harder for them to retain players and they get no "homesick" mammas boys coming home. Look at brisbane this season. Maybe an extra mill on the books and they could keep one or two. Losing five or six second and third year top draft picks has got to hurt.

Vic clubs want equality when it siuts them. The competition is skewed so much in the big clubs in victorias favour they dislike anything that seeks to overcome their advantage. While it may be unfair to SA and WA clubs and some of the smaller melb clubs it gives Sydney a chance to play with the big boys. They still have to use it wisely (and not blow it all on Buddy)

It's unfair but only to the extent of trying to overcome a significant disadvantage.

When Collingwood play in Launceston and Geelong then it is time to scrap the COLA

i think it sucks balls but i also think that if AFL is to survive, it does need to keep making inroads into NSW so the swans (and eventually GWS) need to keep being successful because hardly anyone gives a stuff about aussie rules in the top right quarter of Australia where there are a fair few people. still, it sucks balls.

Ideally Sydney/GWS should have no distinct advantage, reality is they need it. BUT, it should be nothing like what it is. COLA should be limited to players in the system 3 years or less and/or only those paid under a certain amount. That would help them keep the young talent and build their base without giving them a huge advantage where they shouldn't (e.g. Tippet, Buddy)

Also, the deal they want to do with Buddy is BS too. The biggest rort of it is that Pickering said that if he doesn't play out the last 9 years, he doesn't get paid!! Stuff that, if they lock him in for that long, then they have to pay him out and it comes out of their cap, whether he plays or not.

What is going to stop them renegotiating his contract back to $1,000,000 a year for five years and just using the 10 million figure to get him out of Hawthorn? Tippet's contract was altered as soon as he got to the club to get him past the PSD.

they should never have expanded into gc and west syd if people don't care.

to be fair, although COLAS BULLSHITE, it is very smart list management.

Sure, well maybe that's another issue that should dealt with. But at least if they do that, in theory, Buddy is free to reject the 'new deal'. Either way, the full terms of whatever contract is signed should be counted towards the cap, even if the player doesn't play - and I'm pretty sure it is. I think we had to count JA's pay-out towards the cap(?). Unless there's mitigating circumstances (like serious and unexpected health issue for example), that's how it should be.

He sure can turn down a new deal with the Swans but his motivation for moving was to get to the city. I look at it like us offering O'Meara a 15 million dollar 12 year deal with full knowledge we are going to change that once Gold Coast choose not to match that deal, the undertone of that deal was that O Meara wanted to come home and needed a direct route to be sure another club didn't get him, so we tamper the system to make sure nobody else can get him.

Yeah, sure. I get it. I'm not sure how you can police that though - I mean you've got to let clubs/players re-negotiate contracts for legitimate purposes, on the other hand, this idea makes a mockery of the 'restricted' part of the 'Restricted' FA.

Maybe a cap penalty on significant changes to player contract if any existing contract has more than 2 years to run on it - means in this case, for example, they wouldn't be allowed to alter Buddy's contract for 7 years without incurring cap penalty of some sort (% of original player payment). Maybe this could also be limited to contracts to the top 12 paid players at a given club (allows significant upgrades on a rising star for e.g.)

The Steves should get on the front foot and put pressure on the AFL.
They have done a lot of good work behind the scenes, now I would like to see them standing up for our club to the AFL so we are no longer pushed around and get fairer treatment.
Speak to the AFL showing them the reports saying Perth is now the most expensive city in Aus.
Get some sports science guys to write a report on effects of travel and its impact on recovery, injuries and career length etc.
WA teams deserve extra $$$ more than Bris, Syd etc

I wouldn't mind so much if it was only given to rookies and draft picks, who are not on big money. The fact that their top end players get a share of it though makes it a joke. As if you need assistance with cost of living when you are on >$500000 a year.

well I spent some time in Sydney recently and guess what? everything is cheaper there including rent! I couldn't believe it. I remember the days when Perth was a cheap place to live. Ha! Cola, we could get it.

Yep agreed. I'm in Sydney regularly for work and there is no doubt in my mind that Perth has overtaken Sydney with cost of living. I think the question needs to come out of this though is what the **** is wrong with us that we've allowed our city to become so ludicrously expensive?

My brother-in law has moved away from Perth (where he was born and raised and has lived all his life) because he is a humble auto mechanic and housing prices in Perth are just too much for them to be able to afford to start a family. Seriously, we are losing the plot.
