Howdy all,

Just a quick question on Stynes and would like to get everyone's thoughts. I was a bit surprised he got the Dee's head role. I actually bought a D's membership a few weeks ago as they are my second team. I have listened to a few of Jim's speeches and radio gigs and he comes across as a bit uninspiring. Gardiner seemed a little more business savvy but obviously had other committments. Gutnick had the cash but made enemies. I look back at the Hawks in 96 and thankfully Ian Dicker came to the rescue and brought us back from financial ruin. Would love to see the same type of person heading up the Dees right now.

So my first question is do you think that Stynes has the credentials to wipe out a $5 million debt or should the Dees have been more patient and searched for someone who had some type of business development/financial background? Also has Jim come out with a short term strategy yet?

I would like to reiterate Jim is great as the public face of Melbourne but not sure if he has the experience to deal with the financial issues.

Good luck for the rest of the year.

The club had gone to the path of finacial and business savy people and it has not worked. What we needed was a person who is passionate about the club and stynes brings this. Does he have the ability to wipe the 5 million in debt only time will tell, but he has made a good start.

Don't underestimate the financial types with Stynes on this board, quite a few of them have significant resumes, which complement Jim's passion.

Fair enough regarding your points above.

I just think a $5 mill debt needs to be managed from a strategic perspective by somebody who has managed businesses in similar financial strife. In my opinion, Jim's got the passion that will make Melbourne a force once again, but the reality is passion doesn't pay the bills.

Has he come out with a financial strategy yet that he has made public to members?

Since his arrival, we've had a flock of members (about 3,000) to give us a record total. He has also set up an event for some of our wealthier members to make a handsome donation to the club, and has mentioned that we intend to target the Casey area in a bid for new supporters.

EDIT - I think you'll find some more information if you search for the media article "Demons Debt Demolition."

He has a few business credentials but really the people of Melbournefc are more than happy to support someone who is relatable, approachable and passionate about the future of our club. They don't give a stuff about Paul Gardner's business degrees but they do give a stuff about Jimmy Stynes because basically, he's Jimmy Stynes-one of us. And Paul McNamee is our CEO with a wealth of knowledge in the business area. I hope it's a winning team.

Cheers DF. Sorry if I am rehashing old threads. Just curious if everyone is happy with his progress even though its early days. Sounds like its a resounding yes by the comments. Cheers :thumbsu:

In relation to business etc. I don't think Jim has a great deal of experience here, but the board he has assembled has a wealth of business experience in a number of differing areas (finance, marketing etc). Jim doesn't do this stuff on his own, the board has a huge input into the running of the club and ultimately, they are the best positioned to assist in the business areas. Jim's passion for the club is also a great asset, as it assures things will get done, whereas I think Gardner's other commitments created problems in this area.

So, after the process of planning and implemented strategies to help the club, Jim can then communicate this news to the members/supporters of the club. He acts as a figurehead really. Coming from him, the news has more soul and passion behind it than if it came from a business guru.

So whilst his business experience may not be great, he has people with those attributes behind him, and in conjunction this should work out well for the club.

i knew you had a soft spot for the dees,

but to the topic at hand, Big Jim is definitely the best man in this position, the reason is as many people have said that he has the passion. Passion can move mountains in my opinion. He admitted that he prob isnt the best person in charge, yet he couldnt find someone better, who could do the job (cue the two men that were mentioned, the bhp was one that was mentioned).

Stynes has the credentials he has started a very successful charity organisation, which im sure is not an easy task. A bloody good cause too so he has a lot of contacts, he can get the money if it came to it, when he said melbourne wont fold, move or merge in his time i believed it. That is too the point of him not moving seconds before we did one of the mentioned situations.

Also it wasnt melbournes choice, if it came to a vote i guarantee gardner would NOT win it. Not a chance in hell. Gardner stood aside on top of that stynes wanted to wait, but it was now or never, the debt was getting to large the afl bastards would not wait. I agree with stynes' movement, let history agree.

The other thing is that we are attracting some former players back to the club in a number of roles. It might not seem important at first, but when you think about it, these guys are the heart and soul and they are very passionate about the club. Jim Stynes is president, Andrew Leoncelli is on the board, Chris Connolly is football operations manager, Garry Lyon and Greg Healy are advisors to Stynes, and I seem to recall a couple of other former players saying that they'd like to get involved (maybe Ingerson and Schwarz?).

It is great to get these guys back to create some excitement, passion and a positive atmosphere. In saying that, people with strong business backgrounds (preferable with complimentary skills) are also required for a club to run successfully. There's only so much passion and soul can achieve, those things need to be backed up by something substantial.
