On another board, it asked which were the four worst midfields in the AFL. Thankfully with Bucks and Burns still kicking no-one dared say CFC. But with these 2 out/upforward as seems possible through this year, who is our remaining midfield and how do they stack up?

West Coast and Bribane both have scary units. Ours is as good if not better than anybody else's. If Bucks is missing then we really come back to the pack.

I'm pretty sure we were mentioned a few times as one of the four worst midfields , not that it's a particularly devastating event.
We have an average midfield who when working together are very good at clearances which will be vital in 05 (although they generally are vital at anytime), if we are able to get the ball and clear it quickly to our formidable looking forward line it will make up for our lack of polish and pace through the guts.

Its good now but the problem is replacing both Burns and Buckley.
Buckly
Burns
Licuria
Woewodin
Holland
O'Bree (as bad as he is he adds depth ;))
Lockyer
C.Morrison
With Didak and Davis rotating (hopefully in 2005 didak becomes a midfielder more than a forward) and reportably Johnsons being used in the midfield too.
We lack pace but its not a huge problem when you have clearence specialists in the top 4 midifelders listed there.

Future midfield hopefuls are:
Rowe
B.Shaw
Cole
Leonard
Rusling (not sure where he'll be used, a bit of a utility kinda like Kouta)
Egan
Iaccobucci

It's an ok bunch and could turn out to be great but they are largely untested.

I think we may need to trade or bottom out to get a quality future elite midfielder in the draft in the future.

short of the need to trade or come nearly last in order to get an elite midfielder/playmaker, I hope this year we can explore what midfield potentials we have already. As you say let's see Rowe, BShaw, Leonard, Rusling and Iacobucci (with Johnson, the Davis/Didak combo, and potentially Cole) all being played through there to know what we have got. And let's start with the Wizard Cup. We'll lose some games that way, but that seems better than the drastic expedient of bottoming out in order to draft a youngster who's 2 or 3 years underdone or set up for a trade when no midfield playmakers are on offer (eg Judd has resigned at West Coast).

oops, hogging the conversation, I forgot to mention King as a potential for midfield grunt. If the players seem to believe in him as a 100%er (as reported) that can at least breed team self-confidence.

There's no end of varied midfield hard-getters, stoppers, run-withs, accumulators, show-ponies, but playmakers are rare - ball, vision, incisive pass that opens up the opposition, and brings one or two team-mates into the picture. Of our "fringe" or upcoming midfield options, only Lockyer has shown this. Rowe is still a bit will-o-the-wisp to know; BShaw some say is the next playmaker - but so far it seems more accumulator than incisive vision (which is fine, but not playmaker yet); and so it would be good to have them in the Wiz cup to see what kind of midfielders they might become at the top level.

Many we haven't yet seen in top action. Somewhat unfairly, playmaker hopes are now getting pinned onto a newbie we have seen. Zane. Again a lot of us would like to see him in Wiz cup, as he looks the most complete playmaking package we've seen since......

With the depth we've added in the last two years, we'll be much better equiped to cover Bucks and Burns. We'll essentially lose Bucks' full value this year as he spends more time up forward.

On those stupid "Rate a club etc" things, I didn't even look at the Collingwood one. I'm sick of getting on there and defending us to the death. The AFL board at this time of year is full of those stupid threads.

I don't think we've got anything to worry about in the midfield.

I would rate our midfield above Adelaide (who are in a worse state than us when Roo retires), Essendon (slowest ever), Hawthorn, Kangas, Melbourne, Richmond (draftees are unproven at this level), Bulldogs. I feel we can match it with Carltons recycled midfield, Sydneys is ageing more than us,

West Coast, Brisbane are the benchmark, Freos can be good at times but very inconsistent and Connolly doesnt know how to use them. Geelongs is just better than us.

Pace is our main problem but or midfield are one of the best at sharking the ball from oppostion taps as seen by our high clearance rate compared to shocking hitout record. It is a middle of the road midfield like our defence, not rated by others but it gets the job done

I agree,I'm hoping Didak,Johnson and Davis get a good run in there to help with the pace side of things.

Theres no doubt we have to pluck 1-2 classy young midfielders out of our arses.

Didak and Johnno will make good midfielders, Licca and Holland will be around for a while. Just needs a bit more class though.

St. Kilda, North and Melbourne are right up there as well.

If you take Buckley out of ours, we don't have much class. Didak needs to show this season that he can be a genuine on-baller for us.

collingwoods mid-field is ********e, along with the rest of the team

20 minutes into your bigfooty career and you pull out this pearler.

Maybe you could hook up with JUBJUB, you'd make a great couple.

BTW why have you name your club as geelong, yet you refer to Essendon as "we" in another post.

What a ****head!!
