140 no in a World Cup final - surely will go down as the greatest one day innings ever.
Mind you, he has a lot to thank Damien Martyn for. It was the fact that Martyn came in and stroked the ball magnificently from ball 1 that allowed Ponting some time to settle.
And then when he had settled, he just took over...
Let's not forget that 88 from 84 balls in WC final ain't bad either.
If you are comparing full innings I actually think Martyns innings was better, given his broken finger, came in in a tricky time when Hayden and Gilchrist had just been dismissed, Ponting scratched around for his first 50 and then went beserk after that. Martyn looked good from ball 1
This reinforces the Steve Waugh theory that partnersips win matches - If we had been losing wickets at the other end Punter would not have made 140 and we would not have got 359 - but i still think we would have won the match!
I didn't notice at the time, but watching a bit of the replay on Fox tonight, with 4 overs to go, Aust. were 2/312. Ponting was 103, Martyn 83. In 4 overs they scored 47 runs, of which Punter got 37 while poor old Marto couldn't get much strike and got 5 (with 5 extras.) Just shows how dominant and how much in control Punter was.
