How is the AFL Fixture determined?

The teams are asked to provide a wish-list of things they would like included in the fixtures next year. For example, we ask for two games per year against Port Adelaide and as few Saturday afternoon & Monday night games as possible. Collingwood & Essendon request to be given a game on ANZAC Day at the MCG. That sort of thing.

All of these wishes are then compiled and fed into the computer.

The computer also takes into account the ladder at the end of R22 (used to be R15 when it was done handraullically), ensuring that no team gets to play more than 4 of last year's finallists in rounds 16-22.

Once all the variables have been fed in, they hit the button and the computer comes up with a draw.

No, sadly there is no guarrantee that we will get to play all the non-finallists next year twice. Wishfull thinking.

Actually at the start of the year the Crows draw was about the easiest there was, unfortunately this year the bad teams actually started playing well and vice versa.

One of the first games usually scheduled is for the crows to play in Perth Rd 22. They then wait for us to compplain and work backwards from there.

Just wondering with the Crows in 9th place after 16 rounds-do we get to play the teams below us twice next season?
Last year the Crows finished 2 or 3rd if we include finals and Port 12th.

Using last year's finishing order the last 7 games for the Crows are against 3,15,12,10,8,13,5.
For Port 9,7,2,16,11,10,3

So the Crows got 3, 5 and 8 from last year plus 10, 12, 13 and 15.
Port got 2, 3 and 7 from the top 8 plus 9, 10, 11 and 16.

The Crows were lucky that Port finished 12th and Port unlucky the Crows finished 2nd as the strength for the rest of the draw pretty well reflects their finishing order.

It's not an easy draw to do as money making matches such as the showdown need to be squeezed in but overall the AFL does a pretty good job.
Collingwood is involved in more games the AFL needs to cater for than any other club.

However as pointed out previously the main lottery in the draw is how teams fare in the following year.
We (Port) get to play the bottom and second bottom team twice this year but last year they were the 7th and 9th team respectively. Actually they were 7th and 9th with a bullet and people thought we had a tough draw, but the bullet backfired and we ended up with a dream draw.
The reverse applies for the Crows. The 10th, 12th and 14th teams are currently the 1st, 4th and 2nd.

Not quite.
The Showdown was round 22 but both the Crows and Port wanted that changed.
Now in round 22 Adelaide and Port are going to take turns at going to Perth.

We were there in 98, 01, 02, 05. There are 13 other AFL teams who could play there. All other 13 teams should take it in turns to play there 4 times in 10 years. By my reckoning we should have to go back there until about season 2050. :D
