How can you trace
Tracing something involves making a shape with the pen tool, over the top of a base image.

So in my instance, I used the pen tool to go over the outline of Jobe Watson's jumper and then shorts.

The only thing I'd change about the OP is the sash.
I know this was creating a template, so the sash specifically wasn't part of that.
However, if you are doing a sash, some are not straight lines between the left shoulder and right hip.
Some bend. As sashes should.
So what I would recommend is trying to find the mid point of the sash at the bottom, then the mid point of the sash at the top.
Hold the button down as you click the second point to get a bezier curve handle.
Change the stroke of the sash to the same width as the reference sash.
Use the curve handle to create the warp in the sash.
I usually make sure the sash is outside the border of the jumper by using Round Cap or Projecting Cap (in the Stroke tab), and then either use a Clipping Mask to hide the overhang, or Pathfinder>Crop to cut it out completely.

Is this alright so far GG?

it's pretty 'edgy', curve more rather than making more points to make it smoother.

very good though, keep going!

Thanks NM for the tip and encouragement , will do with the curve tool (had a go using it to round the top of the sash) I'm sure after a bit more practice I'll get it refined. Thanks for posting up the tut too Greater Gattsby:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::).

Looks fantastic mate! Yeah, just essentially what NM_Mitchell said, curved lines look best - but it will come with practice :)

Thanks mate , your right about the practice. As I mentioned in my last post thanks for putting up the tut too , It's well presented and easy to follow so it won't be too difficult to finish it. BTW - I wanted to know if there are any more tutorials coming (my hope is to see something where maybe retro jumpers , from all era's gone by , lace up jumpers , retro collars and how to do laces for lace up jumpers might be done) , I'd certainly be keen to try that if it happened , or else I may eventually get good enough to attempt it myself.

No worries, anytime!

Yeah mate, seriously anything you want to learn how to do, just let me know and I'll do my best to present something for yourself and others to learn off :) I'm on holidays at the end of this week, so I'll have lots of time to help out.

Even though I have just recently started using Ai , the curve tool from what I can gather seems to eliminate the need for too many anchor points , playing around with it I found 2 anchor points sufficiant sufficient:rolleyes::oops::D:thumbsu: on a section then manipulating the handles to get a smooth curve.

a path, from when I joined them.

I don't think the paths have been joined, otherwise that line shouldn't be there.

OR

The two paths were slightly apart when joined, hence the gap.

OR

The anchor point at the collar was joined with the anchor point at the bottom of the jumper, hence joining two complete shapes.

Either way, I'd trace it again.

nah just undo the join and cut the line in the middle from its anchor points

you're not supposed to close the path before duplicating and joining
This is where half my dislike of Illustrator comes from. Inkscape is much more logical with this and with grids/snapping.

Would this tutorial be a similar process to making a template for PSD?
I don't think I worded that right. I meant could the same steps being showed here in the tutorial, work when making a PS template? If so I'd love it if someone could show me.

The process seems pretty compatible, you can use pen tool shapes.
