A lot of posters using stats lately to back players up etc.

Shaun Grigg has had 8 tackles this season.

Arnot had 9 against the Hawks...

Do I need to say anything else? I understand they play different roles but Grigg is playing midfield and big minutes yet has 8 tackles for the year..! How is that even possible?

It is hard to understand how Grigg never gets dropped... I mean Arnot hasn't set the world on fire but just the difference in their kicking and tackling should be enough evidence that giving Arnot the chance to develop into a solid midfielder is much more valuable to the team long term than playing Grigg every week. Grigg's kicks float through the air giving the opposition time to run back while Arnot has opened up the ground with his penetrating kicking.

Grigg is an outside player who's role is to receive the ball from the inside midfielders, distribute it up the ground, and hopefully create some run.

Arnot is an inside player who's role is to get it to guys like Grigg, and also to apply defensive pressure and tackling/battering ram efforts.

If Grigg was laying 9 tackles a game, we'd be ****ed, because it would mean that we'd be getting completely slaughtered on the outside and wouldn't be generating any attack whatsoever because our attacking-minded players would be too busy defending.

The same can be said of Houli, who everybody else always seems to have a go at too.

Grigg is out of form, no denying this (many of our players are), but tackling is one of the few stats he shouldn't be judged on.

We are getting slaughtered on the outside anyway

That's a bullshit cop out anyway; "plays outside"

Brad Hill has doubled the amount of tackles Grigg has.

Matty White has had 21.

Most on here think Heppell is a seagull, he's had 31 tackles this year...

Griggs got owned by an unknown called Lin dong v the bulldogs and should have been dropped after that game He still needs to have a defensive mindset to his game
Griggs must learn when it's your turn to go you must go. I'm sorry I don't buy that his role is a flower in the wind role.
I know what you mean DH expects him to play the role you say but it comes at a big cost to the team since his foot skills are poor to play this expected role
In my belief the role play is just a cop out

Don't get the love for Arnot. Sure, he's a servicable, big bodied player who can tackle, but he's only on the fringe of our 22 as he can't find the pill. No real problem with him being left out this week IMO.

Thomas offers us more - Tackles just as much and at least gets on the end of it. And before people say Thomas is as fast as treacle and turns it over, I'd rather a player win the ball and turn it over on occasion, than not win it at all.

Sorry TheDyerLegacy I'm stealing this because it's very appropriate.

I've got no issue with Thomas being in. I think he's a spud but he has a crack. Sure, having a crack should be the minimum but at the moment it's not. I want to see 22 blokes named who have a crack and therefore I think the 3 who got dropped tonight are stiff. Once we get there then we can start worrying about upgrading with skill and making guys earn games etc because at the moment it's a shambles.

That player's name is Lin Jong. He played a ripping game vs us. I also saw him against Carlton, and he was pretty fair in a losing side. He is hungry and quick, and I'd give him a start on the wing in place of Grigg. Look out for him.

Isnt he a ruckman????

Sorry
I'd never seen him until we put Griggs 20m away onto him
Jong is dropped this week but Griggs marches on

That was exactly what Grigg did in 2012, and he was tagged several times as the space he was creating was elite, his run and carry was elite and his disposal by foot was excellent. He impacted the scoreboard. Grigg fell away in 2013, and his best game was against Bulldogs as a tagger on Libba. He has started 2013 with a complacent attitude. He still creates space, but what he does now is holds the ball up (instead of run and carry), turns back into traffic and goes sideways, and when he does kick forward, it is to no one. When we don't have the ball, he jogs around. He refuses to man up when we don't have the ball. Often gets cheap possessions when the game is over.

I don't care that he does not tackle. He is not the damaging link up player he should be. The "wake up call" is a stint at VFL level. He can be replaced by Ellis in the meantime.

I'm sorry if you have a player in your team who refuses to have any physical contact in their defensive game then they're out until they can add this to their bag of tricks
In all walks of life in the 21st century employers love people who can multi task
Griggs IMO is unemployable as he is lazy and one dimensional
It's players like Griggs that will lead to the eventual demise of DH
Ask Dan and Wallace faith in your love children doesn't cut it as the restless faithful will end up spreading pet turd fertiliser all over Punt rd

Here's another one: Grigg had 28 possesions on the weekend, Arnot's had 31 for the year. They play different roles so they aren't valued on the same statistics.

Grigg needs to lift his defensive game no doubt though.

31 in 2 and a quarter games?

Grigg's lack of tackles wouldn't be an issue if he actually went in hard when required. It is all good and well to say he is an outside player; however it should be a team Mantra "When it's your turn you go and you go hard".

Also for an outside player he is not creating much outside run and space. Also drilled 50 metre passes that hit team mates on the tit would help also.

There was a period in the hawks game where we switched to a man on man approach to try and stem the bleeding a little bit. ill give you all 1 guess who the only player was STILL without and opponent... and this was even after we had held them up for 25-30 seconds allowing more time for everyone to find their man. Grigg still opted to move away out to the opposite wing anticipating a turn over so he could get the next kick.

its one thing to have a role in the side to run and spread on the outside WHEN WE HAVE THE BALL, but when the opposition has the ball he needs to be finding his direct opponent and busting his balls to get over to him ASAP otherwise it screws up the zone and the man on man because someone else somewhere on the field is having to cover two players and it just domino effects from there.
