Channel 10 News just said that Meesen has just put contract talks on hold, and considering he’s out of contract at season’s end I’m not overly confident he’ll be back next year. :(

I believe Richmond’s Danny Meyer is also out of contract at season’s end. He’s 20 years of age, originates from Glenelg, and is reportedly home sick although that’s just speculation. He’s struggling to make an impact with the Tigers, but has performed quite well with Coburg in the VFL.

So considering they were taken at picks 8 and 12 respectively in the 2004 AFL Draft, would you trade Meesen for Meyer?
OK, Meesen's leaving and clubs are talking to Meyer.

Is Meyer our man? Oh and I think most would go ahead with the trade now. ;)

I'd be happy with Pick 28 and our 3rd Rd pick 43 <-> Richmond's 3rd Rd Pick 35 + Meyer - 04 pick 12, local lad, unsettled at Tigerland (move home could do wonders), 21yr old (plenty of time on his hands and potential to improve drammatically), medium Inside Mid/Fwd, 183cm 76kg

So in terms of structure/turnover we lose:

Mattner: 25, rookie-elevated 02, hard-tackling, quick Outside Mid/Def. Pure, agile wingman with a raking left foot, some question marks remain but will greatly benefit from Sydney's style and should provide atleast 4 more years of solid service if used correctly.

And gain:

Meyer: Former 1st Rnd selection with 4 years on Mattner alone, has elite disposal effiency for a player who wins over 40% of his possessions in a contested manner. Can be used as a deceptively quick-moving, pressure-forward (as we all witnessed at AAMI earlier in the year where, funnily enough, he could have been the difference in an upset result to Richmond, if not for a couple of his set shots going astray) Could blossom with the professional culture and state of the art facilities at the club, not to mention coming home and feeling comfortable being close to his family/friends.

And it's not like we're losing a 2nd Rd pick - we never had pick 28 in the first place and we would still have atleast one (very likely two)higher picks in the 2nd Rd with our pick 27 + 'Hudson' pick ;)

The Dogs/Demons are trying to secure another 2nd Rnd pick to satisfy us (I'm tipping Brisbane's #25, StKilda's #26 and/or Hawthorn's #29 are what we will end up) for Hudson/Meesen - with possibly an upgrade of Dogs 3rd Rnd pick 38 for our 3rd Rd pick 35 (from Meyer) in the Hudson deal.

One of those 2nd rounders could be used to secure Symes :)

Suddenly we have two players under 23yrs old with much potential to be long-term players for the club, virtually in return for a 25 and 29yr old who's immediate abilities are required to service their destination clubs' short-term success.

In this case we would STILL have 3 picks inside the top 30 in the draft which could land us IMO atleast one high QUALITY prospect and at worst, one other very serviceable player out of the two remaining picks!! :D

Who here honestly wouldn't be pleased with this outcome?

Why would you offer a 2nd round pick?

Why don't we do what other clubs do to us? He's out of contract. Talk to him about coming here.

3rd round pick or PSD.

Meeson for Jace Bode? Versatile emerging tagger, that can play in the backlines or in the midfield was named AA U 18 on a wing.

Interesting fact: You cant threaten a club with the psd, when they have a lower pick in it than you.

And in the same breath expect the Dogs not to do the same to us??

Your basically saying you would expect Hudson to go for 3rd rd pick or PSD!

Wake up!!

I like your thinking Stazza. Meyer might just be one of those players that simply needs a better opportunity, and its about time we did a port and helped a good lad realise his potential.

And just think what it would be like at Richmond - poor facilities, poor culture, young players chewed up before their time and a coach who dyes his hair!

Well, it would be better than the 4th rounder we're being offered.

An unmatchable contract may allow us.

I don't have a problem with us picking up Meyer and he may well develop into a useful player in a different environment........

but seriously, is he the type of player you ask to put a high price on his head in order to scare other clubs away from in the PSD? How would some of the other young players at the club feel when he is earning maybe twice what they are, yet the've shown more?

I don't think that prospect is too appealing, and frankly can't see it happening.

Sorry, correction, that should read LOTS more.;)
