I cannot even begin to say how envious I was of Geelong last year - and to have a second half of the match where the result was not in doubt and they could revel in the exultation: all power to them, as they had had their fair share of suffering since 1963, and the victory meant so much to so many people.

Words cannot describe the purity of the exhilaration of the second half of the GF last year for me. l spent most of it silence with a big stupid grin on my face. And then exultant hugs with strangers being the best of all. A shared understanding of pain dissolved. Of joy.

Defined by tragedy and loss (and having attended 4 grand finals) l could not believe all year, all my life that we could do it. The Hawthorn comeback at Princes Park! 1989! 92 Like a cork in the ocean! 1993! Colbert! Our eternal search for a forward! Davis! The West Coast comeback at Skilled. 2006...The Ablett family...

And yet despite my hopes being crushed 150000000 times l still nurtured a secret desire and deep down a strong conviction...! To see it grow, flower, bloom and sing! Life itself changed! Perhaps it was/is not ultimately tragic (l remain undecided).

Obviously l hope the Cats get up but if not l fervently hope it is the Doggies barking on the last day in September .

Many, many, many WA supporters refused to follow the Eagles from their inception because the whole "franchise" scenario was unacceptable if not repugnant to them.
